      I agree. There was a building in Las Vegas, known as the Harmon, that had a structural defect discovered before it was completed. The building was finished at about half the planned height. It remained empty for about 10 years, was taken apart and removed. It can be done. In New York on times square, a high rise was recently removed to make way for a new hotel. The was the Millennium tower story is going, it may be removed. It their 'fix' doesn't work......

    It was mid-2004 when the Department of Building Inspection took the extraordinary step of ordering construction halted on a 52-story project at 80 Natoma St. because the building would be unstable on the clay and sand soil of South of Market with the as planned foundation.
    The then head of the Building Inspection Department, Frank Y. Chiu, said in a legal declaration in October 2004 that he ordered the work stoppage in light of their experts’ warnings that the 80 Natoma St. project would sink far more than the geotechnical designers estimated.
    At this point in time, The Millennium Tower is still on the drawing board with the exact same foundation designed by the exact same geotechnical firm - Treadwell and Rollo - that designed the much much lighter 80 Natoma St. project that was just shut down by the Department of Building Inspection for having an inadequate foundation. Treadwell and Rollo are now undeniably aware that their foundation as planned for the Millennium Tower is inadequate and that it will be rejected by the Department of Building Inspection so they simply somehow did not submit it for review and let construction begin. It is of record and undeniable.
    This is what happened and it can be easily fact-checked by anybody, everything else that is being thrown around including the kitchen sink is I suspect an intentional distraction from finding what is a simple truth so the next question will never be asked... How was the Department of Building Inspection sidestepped?

      The piles have to be put throughout the inside of the building as well as the perimeter.
      They way they are doing it now, it is propping up one face of the building while the center that houses the elevator shaft will keep sinking. This building WILL tear itself apart with this fix that is being implemented.
      Several prominent engineers have described this scenario on detail. You cannot have a static portion of a dynamic building. Ask any engineer, you cannot couple a rigid section with a moveable one. Like using solid mounts on a transmission and rubber mounts on the engine, the transmission will be torsiones until it rips apart, have seen it many times.
      I have some background in mechanical engineering, not architectural, but these rules cross over. These people know exactly what they are doing and have the exit plan all laid out, you can be sure of that.
      This is almost as bad as the disaster that is the bay bridge. Decided on by a panel with no engineering backgrounds. It is a ticking timebomb. Now no one claims to be the ones that approved the nutty design. It went over budget by 625 BILLION dollars with yearly maintenance upwards of 100 million depending on what breaks that year.
      The correct plan is much more expensive and the way these construction contracts work out is that in the end, the companies that do the work are dissolved at the first sign of trouble and backroom deals are brokered to keep a predetermined cut of all the money taken in for the project. Just like the Bay Bridge, this is a clusterfuck that is typical of San Francisco.

    PLEASE conduct more interviews with actual tenants and nearby residential and commercial tenants. Maybe even a 2 or 3-part series, an hour long each should be created with experts weighing in (people need to know).
    Inquiring minds want to know:
    Why aren’t the tenants moving out in droves? Is this a thrill for them? No choice, but to remain? Do they feel safe? Do they not care? Where’s the outrage? etc.
    Until this building is purposefully demolished, the risk of a sudden collapse is truly inevitable.
    In the case of any unpredictable weather/natural disaster occurrence, the building collapse will effect other buildings within a few mile radius, to include pedestrians, pets, drivers, bicyclists, etc.

    People: Listen to me. This is the history of South market: Family friend born in SF said as a boy, the PIER was at the cable car turntable, which came later.
    Officials filled that area from there to the Ferry Building, extending it town to Fisherman's Wharf.
    The only bedrock in The City are these areas: Mt Sutro, Twin Peaks, Potrero Hill, the Castro and Hunters Point.
    Officials know this. Do not care.
    Built the Embarcadero Center 1 & 2, the tower, the rest. Its not a phenomenon its dipping sliding shifting and will FALL OVER SOON
    THE LANDFILL IS SAND CONCRETE AND MOTAR. UNDERNEATH THAT IS THE BAY.
    Sell if you have a condo there. Do NOT wait. Do not. That land as they call it is 100 percent unstable and they know it. Imagine an earthquake the size of 7.50 or more: liquefaction of soils as the Tower actually sinks into the bay. I don't need to go on.
    U have been warned. Its 2022. ... former citizen of San Francisco since 6 years old, worked for the City and know lots of government stuff, and escaped to Northern California. Any questions? Just ask. You would be shocked what I know.

      @chrisretired5379 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Right on, thanks for that information !
      I have seen the liquefaction of soils first hand, here in Anchorage during the 1964 quake. Now, city lets them build on the worst area in the city again.

    Sink and tilt are two separate problems with different solutions. Proposed fix may not solve either. Tilt needs to be corrected first. Ironically, the increased tilt caused by pile drilling offers a solution. Drill on the other side to counter tilt back to vertical. Then support the entire foundation pad with piles to bedrock which is the only way to stop sinking. Ideally, bedrock piles should support pad from the bottom and not the sides. Hugely expensive and maybe not possible. Foundation pad is cupping in the center which represents deformation. That can't be good for strength. And there is cracking and spalling in lower levels which also can't be good for strength.

    • @tuvelat7302
      @tuvelat7302 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think if they do manage to put those piles in place (big if), the new strains introduced to the already deformed foundation are going to make matters much worse.

      It’s likely it’ll just keep leaning further and further, at a certain point long before it’s in danger of falling over, it’ll become uninhabitable with no functioning elevators or plumbing. Once that happens it will be dismantled.
