  • In what may have been a lifesaving decision, 76-year-old Jim Ford took part in a study on the Galleri test, a blood test that screens for more than 50 cancers. NBC News' Kate Snow speaks with him to learn more about what was detected, and hears from Dr. Joshua Ofman, the president and chief medical officer for GRAIL, a biotech startup that created the test.

It sickens me that this is not covered by insurance. Hope that changes soon. Does not seem like you would need to get monthly perhaps once every couple years. This could potential he save so many lives.personally I know I would like to take the test.

It's not covered even if it's a preventable tool to get sick and save money to the insurance companies cuz our health it's a business for them....

@@maremacd lol it’s not a coin flip, though your assessment is fair. What it’s saying is that of the positive signals identified, 50% end up in a cancer diagnosis. Of course there are cases that I’m sure are lost to follow up as well. A better way to look at this would be by the Positive Predictive Value (the ratio of patients truly diagnosed as positive to all those who had positive test results). So Galleri is almost 50% and single cancer tests like mammograms are at 5%, colorectal tests are between 4-9%. So this test outpaces these by far.

Wish this was around when I lost my Dad at 48 to pancreatic cancer in 1998. I’ve lost my Mom to Skin cancer in 2018 (she survived breast cancer twice) and because we’re black the oncologist said he hasn’t seen many black patients with cancer but in Canada race based data is still not collected and they use US raced based data which cannot accurately describe the situation of cancer in Canada. Wish my Mom had a blood test as well because she was detected too late and so was my Dad. I’m happy for Jim, where is all the millions of cancer research money going to not make this available worldwide? Because cancer is a huge business. I pray that this will be widely available and I will mention this to Canadian doctors on what I can do to get this widely available. Cancer has really put me through so much grief and trauma, I miss my parents so much. God bless you if you’re going through cancer and hope you have the support like I was for my parents 🙏🏽❤️

At $950, it's unaffordable for most elderly and even regular working class people. If the drop the price to $199, however, consumers will be lining up to buy these, making mass selling easier and still profitable. As it's currently priced, no wonder the health insurance companies won't pay for these.

I'm terrified of getting cancer. I've lost my Mom (I miss her every single day), Grandpa/Grandma (dad's side)and 1 uncle to Cancer. My father, 1 aunt and other relatives who have been diagnosed with Cancer 💔 I think I'm a bit traumatized by it. It's expensive and I'll have to save up for it but it would be worth it. For now I'll continue to eat well, do yoga 3-4x a week, keep my stress levels down and I stopped drinking over a year ago 🥳

@Wellness MiMi, there are a lot of health changes you can make to reduce your chance of getting cancer. Some are easy, some take more time and energy. You can find excellent information on TH-cam from Dr. Eric Berg, Dr. Jason Fung, and motivationaldoc. If we understand how the food we eat affects how our genes are expressed, we can "turn on" healthy genes and "turn off" the unhealthy genes. Ensuring we have enough of minerals is key as well. Stay positive and keep learning, and you will have a healthy life. Blessings.
