Just started playing these Sub 70 659 MBs, love them so far (black head w black shaft). Partially influenced by one of your videos testing sub 70 out! Great video, irons look sharp!
The wooden dowels are a fantastic attention to detail…. All the large high profile club manufacturers could never be this precise for the general public ( only maybe for the top pros )
Not sure why anyone wants their clubs to have a rust look but that is certainly personal preference. Looks like you put a lot of thought into what you want and what works for you. Great video.
For wedges it’s understandable since you replace wedges frequently (if you play a lot). People use raw typically for glare and consistent strikes when dew or water on ground so you aren’t losing a lot of spin because of finish on clubs. But irons not sure unless he’s gonna replace irons every 6 months
Wow AJ, you are so precise in your work. I think you’ve designed some awesome clubs. I’d be willing to make a set of my own someday. For now I’ll stick to OEM. Just bought a set of JPX923 Pro 5-GW loaded with UST Recoil 95 F3 shafts. Looking forward to hitting a bit longer with more control. My JPX800 Pro Forged are decent but a shaft change is needed and costs would exceed 75% cost of a new set. The extra benefit is the new tech in the 923’s for a bit more distance with the stopping power of a decent decent angle. I can’t wait to play them. Thought about the 921’s last year but the 923’s are a bit better. Mizuno has finally provided multiple choices to aid us ground pounders with interesting choices in game improvement tools. Most os us golfer are not players per se even though scores are decent. I strive to be better all the time and have gained immensely since I’m able to play a lot more often. Main reason is short hame. Currently a 7 handicap but making more birdies would help. So I plan to get better at putting. The new irons should help in distance and intros to get closer to those pins. Keep up the good work. I hope the new shop is working out for you. It looks like a nice setup especially with the simulator.
2 questions: do/should you use beads with shims ? And do you have any idea how the golf works “universal hossel” works? How can it be both .370 and .355 taper?
Yes, you can use beads along with a shim without issue. The universal hosel is just stepped so a .355 shaft can sit further down. That said, I will usually still just use a shim with a .355 shaft and don't bother engaging the stepped area.
Hey AJ. Why a wood dowel and not a cork (like you'd use with lead powder)? And I'd love to hear your thoughts on how the Takomo (that you built 12 months ago) and these Sub 70 irons compare. Why the switch?
I need to post another video about this. Might record one tomorrow. I did the first club with the grip on in order to get the weight, then removing the grip and took that measurement. This just made it faster to do the entire set and not need to deal with grips. Problem was I recorded all this but had some major audio glitches that made the footage unusable.😒
Have really enjoyed your videos. Thanks for sharing all your knowledge. I have been playing pure dtx and love them. Installed using air compressor and just recently bought their green nozzle attachment. Why didn’t you use it in the video? I saw it on the bench.
Hi, I like the idea of adding the dowel to help dampen the vibration in the shaft. Do you just need one small dowel to do this or multiple? Also how far should the dowel go down?
I love watching your videos! I've messaged on Instagram to you before and you were a great help. I'm actually booked on my art of club building and repair course in May in the UK. Can't wait. Keep up the great vids 👍
I have not built clubs in years but I enjoyed it and I enjoyed this video. I attempted to get certification through either Golfworks or Golfsmith I don't remember. Regardless I was way off the mark! Oh my lol What is your handicap?
No. I did the first one with grip on to get weight, then removed grip and measure again. That way I can do the rest of the set without needing to use a grip. This was all in the video plan but I had an audio issue that required me cutting that part out.
Great looking build! I'm slightly surprised you didn't choose a Tacomo line since you've featured them several times on your channel. How do you feel about some of the other more affordable DTC brands like Golfworks, Haywood, and New Level.
Great looking irons AJ. Way to go. Got a question regarding older graphite 1 iron shafts and or hybrid shafts that match my driver shafts. the thought was to find 1 iron shafts and hybrid shafts to make my iron shafts as to have a complete matching set. is it possible to cut those longer shafts down as long as i can get the weighting right? thanks for all you do.
What do you use that you pour the acetone into. Any tips on removing the epoxy from the bottom of the hosel in the bottom corner of the outside diameter. I used a brush in drill, but it does not get way to the bottom corner.
I use a drill bit to get the majority of the old epoxy out. Full disclosure, it doesn't matter if a small amount of old epoxy stays down in the base. Will make zero difference. The acetone is poured into a glass votive candle holder flipped upside-down.
Thanks for the info on candle holder. I had no idea what you were talking about. My wife is a floral designer and she has boxes full of them. She now has contributed to my golf club obsession. In regards to drilling epoxy from hosel, I took an 11/32” drill bit, ground the end flat and used it to get in the corners. Worked well. Keep up the videos and thanks for your help and quick response. One quick question. When replacing driver shaft with 3 wood shaft, do you recommend going up in weight, 60 to 70 gram and increasing flex, S to XS.
Nice build AJ. I am also wanting to build a set of Sub70 irons but when I contacted the company they told me they do not sell heads only. How did you source your irons? Did you have to pull shafts from an original build from the company? Thx!
I notice you were doing the swing weighting without a grip either on it or attached in some way. Is that because you already know what the swing weight should be before the grip is added?
Curious about this as well. You went to E0 for the PW, so is it correct to assume that the tape + grip is worth about 5 points? How does that change as you go down the line with other irons?
I’ve done some experimentation as I’ve got more into club building. From my experience, and depending on what components you’re using, my rules of thumb are : - Grip subtracts between 7 and 9 SW points (7 with Golf Pride MCC at 47.5 grams, 9 with Golf Pride ZGrip Cord Midsize at 57 grams) - Ferrule adds between 3 and 4 SW points - Epoxy adds about 1 to 2 SW points - 1 piece of double sided grip tape subtracts 1 SW point
I had some nasty audio issues with my recording of that section so I ended up cutting a good bit out. I did actually use a grip to get my initial swing weight, then took the same measurement without the grip and the shaft flush with the scale backstop. That is where it comes in on the video with the E SW I mention. That is why I included the measurements in graphic form.
I did use the grip first to get my numbers then took it off and measured without to speed up the rest of the set. Had some audio issues with the recording so had to cut that piece showing it.
@@EFGMC great video by the way. I recently build a set using components found on eBay and I had some issues getting the swing weights to where I wanted them. I used one of your previous videos as a guide and apart from the SW being out maybe .5+/- on the clubs, they feel fantastic.
Sorry. I did measure with a grip for the first one then remove it and get a SW without the grip. That just makes it faster to do the entire set. I had to cut that from the video because of some technical audio issues.
No, with a grip to get final weight then remove grip and use that SW to do the rest of the set for speed. Had it in the video but had major audio issues so ended up cutting it out.
Holy cow!!!! AJ threw us on a time machine with those grips.
I haven’t seen those grips since I last worked in a private club proshop in 86/87.

1:36 They came from a custom order request. Made several "vintage" color designs, but they never pick my favorite. Good thing P makes them anyway.🤣
Love the care and attention to detail you put into your builds
just got my t200 build finished with the same ferrules!! great minds think alike!
Those clubs are so nice
These look great out of the chute but please post a quick sequel with the look of these after they patina from use and oxidation.
You have a lot of tools Ajay. Good job. Great looking irons.
i did a golfsmith club building course in the 90's and when they released the Harvey Penick heads i built myself a set, great irons back in the day.
The wooden dowels are a fantastic attention to detail…. All the large high profile club manufacturers could never be this precise for the general public ( only maybe for the top pros )
What happened to the Takomo 201’s?
I have a few Sub70 clubs...they are all great. Their customer service is top notch if you ever need help with anything.
Fantastic colour combo, AJ. Are you having them pured and flo'd? ;-)
Good one...
Have you considered how the wood dowel would slightly stiffen the section of the shaft that it rest in?
nice job man, cant wait to see the patina
They look great! Love ‘em
Looks amazing

It will be interesting to see what you do for driver, fairway woods or hybrids.
Love the ferrules!!! Love the look!!! I noticed you don’t do frequency. Taper tip?
These are all taper tips.

Those 923 Pros are solid and long!
Would you put a Wood dowel into a utility / driving iron?
You could if you have a steel shaft however most utilities are much softer feeling on mishits so not sure it would matter as much.
Hey AJ. Why a wood dowel and not a cork (like you'd use with lead powder)?
And I'd love to hear your thoughts on how the Takomo (that you built 12 months ago) and these Sub 70 irons compare. Why the switch?
AJ, I could not see the swing weight scale, but I noticed you were measuring the SW without grips. Did I miss something there???

Hey AJ,
Love your videos ❤ please continue with it.
Short question about sub70… do they sell heads only??
Best regards Markus
They don't sell direct to consumer heads, only assembled.
Have really enjoyed your videos. Thanks for sharing all your knowledge. I have been playing pure dtx and love them. Installed using air compressor and just recently bought their green nozzle attachment. Why didn’t you use it in the video? I saw it on the bench.
Doesn't always work with other grip brands. Need that soft butt cap to get a good seal for it and these grips were too firm to do that.
@@EFGMC thanks for the insight.
just wondering do you use fishing line for the shaft so that the shaft doesn't move around ?
Going Graphite for 2023 👍
Hi, I like the idea of adding the dowel to help dampen the vibration in the shaft. Do you just need one small dowel to do this or multiple? Also how far should the dowel go down?
Just one hammered down as far as possible into the shaft although it could really sit anywhere in the shaft and get the same results I guess.
I love watching your videos! I've messaged on Instagram to you before and you were a great help. I'm actually booked on my art of club building and repair course in May in the UK. Can't wait. Keep up the great vids 👍
Pretty
I have not built clubs in years but I enjoyed it and I enjoyed this video. I attempted to get certification through either Golfworks or Golfsmith I don't remember. Regardless I was way off the mark! Oh my lol What is your handicap?
With those irons being soft, will you have to check the loft and lie angles after each season or more often?
Probably once a year is enough. Depends on how often they are used and where they are used.
Question.. you swing weight pre-assembled them without the grips (or without one balancing on butt end) is this the typical way..?
No. I did the first one with grip on to get weight, then removed grip and measure again. That way I can do the rest of the set without needing to use a grip. This was all in the video plan but I had an audio issue that required me cutting that part out.
where does one find those colored ferrules?

What size wooden dowel??

Thank you so much.

I am a Sub70 dealer so I can get things beyond what is available through general retail.
When letting the glue dry overnight, does it matter if placing the head on top or bottom, will there be any issue?
Always head down! Otherwise epoxy will run down the inside of the shaft.
When you were testing out iron shafts, what differences did you notice between X100 and S400 that made you choose s400?
These are 120g S400 which is about 117g raw weight. They have the right amount of flex feel for me. X100 always leads to forcing my downswing.
I notice you were doing the swing weighting without a grip either on it or attached in some way. Is that because you already know what the swing weight should be before the grip is added?

No. Never. No. Don't do it unless someone does it for free. Otherwise save your money.
