Hey man, nice job. As a current builder myself, noticed the slight tape build up/bunching from all those wraps. I found that using an old steel shaft or thick screw driver smooths that out. Running it up and down helps get rid of that and it won’t be felt under the grip. Hope that helps for future grippings. Keep up the good work.
I've never found that the wrinkles are noticeable with the grip on. At least I haven't found anyone who ever said they could feel it. People don't feel the shaft step edge in a Dynamic Gold under the grip and a tape wrinkle is smaller than that.
I remember a video you had on a while back on the amount of tape being added on and it really didn’t make that much sense to do as the difference in the width was not that much, or was the added 6-7 grip tapes used to counterbalance the golf club. Awesome job. Like how you put some epoxy inside the ferrules. The fitter who did mine must’ve skipped that step when I had my T100S irons RESHAFTED with TT Red AMT red shafts. Some of the ferrules have creeped up towards the grip end. When my grooves wear out on my 2021 T100S irons I’m thinking of going to Takomo. The reviews have been solid and for about $500 for a set of irons it’s a great deal.
Are there any builders out there that pure the head and the shaft together. I tape the laser pointer to the side of the house and keep turning the head until I get a pierced straight on no circles.
How about frequency matched shafts? Or are these newer shafts better quality or consistent than they used to be, or because they are tapered tip shafts?
as an avid club builder, I enjoy your videos and your attention to detail. I personally have never worked with pured golfshafts and the proper alignment when assembling but I was surprised that Grant didn't have that done. Personally I'm not that good that I believe it would make a difference for me. What are your thoughts on pured shafts?
Love the video. Always get confused on why the 201s are never considered. It's always a 301 or 101t. Figured he'd be a 201 kind of guy close to those 770s he was gaming.
With that many wraps why not just use midsize with a few extra wraps? Wouldn’t that be about the same and be easier to install? Just curious. Thanks and great video!
Iain Poulter said that he liked the more solid feel under his hands as opposed to the softer rubbery feel of a larger grip. Don’t know if it’s the same for Grant though…
That's the big difference is the Tour Velvet gets much harder with all that tape vs the midsize version. I think a midsize in a firmer model might be better for him.
Great video, thanks. Quick question regarding the extra layers of tape. Didn’t you say in a video with specifically on that topic that extra tape hardly changes grip thickness?
These Takomo irons are nice for sure but so are those p7cb/P770 tm's Grant Was using. Obviously price was a non-factor here. As far as the build up tape goes a lot of pros do this even if they use midsize grips. It makes the grip much firmer and slightly larger, especially in the lower hand. I think Bubba Watson uses like ten or more wraps....on a midsized grip (?). Feel is everything with these guys..
Couldn’t get a better club builder ,was wondering when Grant would make the switch to Tacoma. For the price is there any reason more and more players would be considering these beauties. After seeing the Bryan bros say nothing but great things about these clubs.
I believe height does not always mean longer clubs. Most people that are 6" 4" probably have longer arms than a 5'10" person. measure from wrist to floor with hand hanging down while standing straight will help determine proper club lenght as a starting point. Also how you personally address and swing determines proper lie angle. Hope this helps some.
6 grams for the 7 wraps will bring swingweight down by more than a point (~4.5 g per sw point at the butt end). But, yeah, the one that measured D4 raw would be hard to bring down to D2. You could drill out a couple of grams from the hosel of the clubhead.
The end result is slightly heavier than D2 based on these specs. I strongly dislike making club heads lighter unless you are dealing with more extreme lengths (1.5 inch long or more). Heavier head is almost always better than lighter and the most important thing with with weight in golf clubs is continuity so all the irons feel the same.
Since the money taper, I’m guessing the tips are not gonna be cut so the shit in the shafts be glued to the head before you cut the length cause a lying might need to be adjusted. If you cut first some could be long simply could be short by the time you adjust the triangle.
This will be interesting, Grant's game is well publicised and there will be no hiding if these irons don't perform 😮. Personally I believe George Bryan's iron play has gone down the toilet since joining Takomo🤷♂️
I didn't. They will be closer to D3.5 but no real way around that with 130x shaft at over length. You can drill out heads and reduce mass but I strongly dislike that idea. You could counterbalance but that is an entirely different setup and I would never just counterbalance clubs without discussion at least and testing at best with a client.
@@EFGMC thank you, that's awesome. Seems like irons with an adjustable weight in the back have an advantage if you want a lower swing weight with stiffer/heavier shafts 🤔
Shhhh... Don't tell Taylormade... Possible giveaway maybe? That build is a lil crazy 130g x-stiff with 7 wraps lol. Either way he's gonna love the way the ball comes off those 101t's. They're just too good from factory.
The swingweights varied somewhat. Why didn't you adjust those with either tip weights or lead powder down the shafts? It takes more time, but isn't complicated. Maybe you did it, but didn't show it. I would have laid the 8 layers of tape you made on the butt end of each club on top of the split grip while pre-measuring swingweights. I scotch tape tip weights and ferrules to the clubheads while testing swingweights before asembly to get the added tip weights right. In this case I would have also taped the shims as well, and assumed the added epoxy due to the shims would amount to about half a swingweight point. The necessity of shims tells me the Takomo heads have parallel hosels and the shafts have taper tips.
It's kind of amazing how few people play the MBs, that virtually *nobody* plays the 201s, and how tiny the cavity is on the 301CB. Seems to me they should get rid of the 201, and give the 301 CB a slightly bigger cavity.
I wonder how he's going to like the sound of the 101T, compared to his current 770s which are foam-filled. I recall you did a video on foam filling the 101T-- I wonder if you considered suggesting that for Grant?
Regarding the swing weights are they all different? I noticed on your notes that they are but I have no idea what that means in terms of consistent performance. I thought the swing weights had to be the same? Any insight would be welcome. Very interesting video 👍
The small differences in the SW I addressed during the assembly using more or less epoxy to get everyone feeling similar. If the weights were more significantly off, we would need to use tip weights but that wasn't necessary here.
All assembled by hand, usually in a factory mass produced. Pros and Takomo staff (at least most of them) have dedicated builders who they know and always work on their equipment.
Getting a fitting with you -- How would I know if those clubs would be suited for me without swinging them with a number of shaft options? Are they a hollow-body iron with forgiveness?
1) Why doesn’t Grant just play midsize grips plus 2 wraps? 2) Are you not concerned about the obvious crease and wrinkles in the build up tape? Tour Velvet is pretty thin, players might feel them? 3) What’s your overall experience with KBS shafts in terms of their consistency in weight? I recently built a set of Miura MB101 using KBS Tour Stiff custom black pearl shafts. About half weighed 110g after cutting to length, half weighed 114g after cutting to length, a pretty big difference (the Miura heads were each less than 0.3g off of the website stated weight, incredible). 4) In terms of swing weight, what in your view is an acceptable +/- range? Typically anything +/- 1 SW would be acceptable for my builds.
That is what he wanted. I've covered in other videos that build up tape is very inefficient/inexact for changing size but I built them the way he requested. As for wrinkles, I've never had any issue with feeling them under the grips. I do agree he should probably just look at midsize but maybe in a firmer style since all that buildup tape really thins out the rubber and makes it feel harder. I've found the PVD shafts have more issues with weight than the chrome ones.
They came out a little heavier than D2. Counterbalancing is never something I would do without a client knowing what we are doing and being on board with because you are making a club heavier just to say it's lighter in SW.
Cut and prep everything then dry fit together for SW to make sure everything is consistent. Then you can make weight adjustments need be during assembly.
My guess is that is what he's always used. The size actually comes out between std and mid but will feel much firmer because the rubber is being stretched significantly. Weight is a wash since std is 50g, std with tape was 56g, and midsize Tour Velvet is 57g. Personally I think Grant might like midsize better.
@ thanks for the explanation! Yeah, it seems like a lot of extra work that’s not necessary so I was just curious on the justification! I bet you’re right on Grant liking midsize more and he doesn’t know it yet…..Ha ha he’s such a good dude! I know when I switched to midsize my hands immediately felt more comfortable. It was a huge improvement on my game.! Cheers
Are those heads light? Or is the money taper slightly counter balanced? I know KBs tour is and was popular for that reason. I’d think you’d have to back weight them a bit at 1/2” over to get to d2.
They came out a little heavier than D2. I would never counterbalance anything without at least discussion with the client. Adding mass just to reduce swing weight is a complicated question.
Love this.

Very cool! I’m curious tho. How can he play these if he has a contract with Taylormade? Doesn’t he have to play their clubs?
is there a machine the big company use to build clubs? also do all pro golfer get there clubs hand build?
All assembled by hand, usually in a factory mass produced. Pros and Takomo staff (at least most of them) have dedicated builders who they know and always work on their equipment.
Did Grant get a fitting or are his specs based on his current set?
They sent me the specs and I built them from there. Guessing these are the same specs he's used for a while.
Sweet video
Getting a fitting with you -- How would I know if those clubs would be suited for me without swinging them with a number of shaft options? Are they a hollow-body iron with forgiveness?
The 101t is a players style hollow body with very traditional lofts.
I've found the PVD shafts have more issues with weight than the chrome ones.
is it better to get a parallel shaft or to get .355 shafts and use shims?
What’s the difference is using that much tape vs just a Midsize tour velvet?
Do you spine align the shafts?
Not a big thing to do from what I've seen lately. AJ can expound more than I, I'm sure though.
Clubbuilder here, its not nearly as bad as it used to be back in the mid 2000s the way manufacturers weld their shafts now causes very little warp.
No I don't. I tell people if they want to FLO their own shafts, it's their business but I would never ever pay someone for shaft alignment.
@ thanks! Just curious, what’s your reasoning for not FLO’ing the shafts?
Did you need any but weights to get to the D2 swingweight with te +0,5” longer build?
They came out a little heavier than D2. Counterbalancing is never something I would do without a client knowing what we are doing and being on board with because you are making a club heavier just to say it's lighter in SW.
just curious...why not use midsize grips or oversize instead of so many wraps under a standard?
Are you butt cutting the shaft first so the swing weighting can be precise?
Would the sw be off if you installed the heads first and then butt cut?
Cut and prep everything then dry fit together for SW to make sure everything is consistent. Then you can make weight adjustments need be during assembly.
Thanks for the video, it was very interesting, I do have one question however, were the shafts poured or spine aligned. Again thanks for the video.
Thats awesome
What grit is that belt you're using on the ferrules? I'm guessing 1000-2000?
It's a linen belt so no grit. Best option for ferrule work and the secret is to get it worn in a little so it has a bit more give to it.
Thank you! @@EFGMC
Those Ping ISI BeCu's 👍🌵🌵
How far off were the measured loft and lies from the listed loft and lies?
Within a degree on all these.
@@EFGMC Nice, thanks!
this might be a dumb question but instead of building up the grips with so many layers, why not just go to a mid sized grip?
That's what he requested but agree that midsize seems like a better future option.
How do you line up the grip logos with the players preference? I.e., Logo with a squared face, etc.
With square face. These were logo down so makes it easier.
Awesome !!👍
I saw you added 7 layers of masking tape to bump up his grip size a bit. Was the actual grip a standard or mid size grip? Thanks!
It was standard size. All that tape brought it to a diameter of around .940
What’s the difference between six layers of tape and a standard grip vs. one layer of tape and a midsize grip? Is it weight or is it a feel thing?
@ I agree. Surprised he didn’t choose the 120/125 since he’s building over
