Also Gohan is a halfbreed and Vegeta states sometimes they are given special hidden power that exceeds that of a full blood Sayain. It doesn't happen everytime though as Trunks posses no such power. Your definitely right regarding why Goku went first, as he wanted Gohan to study Cell, however, Goku was fully banking on Gohan to awaken his hidden power, but as Picolo pointed out, he didn't think Goku understood that Gohan was only a scared 11 year old boy who was sent out to fight/die by his own father. Gohan isn't a fighter, he is very passive and fully believes everyone has a good side to them. He even tries to talk Cell into turning over a new leaf. Gohan went ssj2 in the time chamber so he was the strongest thats why Goku did this. As he explains he only went 1st so Gohan can see how Cell fought.
Gohan was the strongest because he was able to achieve the ssj 2 stage first. Goku didn't achieve this form until after the cell saga, but it was before the Buu saga. Also Gohan is a halfbreed and Vegeta states sometimes they are given special hidden power that exceeds that of a full blood Sayain. It doesn't happen everytime though as Trunks posses no such power. Your definitely right regarding why Goku went first, as he wanted Gohan to study Cell, however, Goku was fully banking on Gohan to awaken his hidden power, but as Picolo pointed out, he didn't think Goku understood that Gohan was only a scared 11 year old boy who was sent out to fight/die by his own father. Gohan isn't a fighter, he is very passive and fully believes everyone has a good side to them. He even tries to talk Cell into turning over a new leaf. As Android 16 said, Gohan is gentle and doesn't wish to hurt anyone. After this Goku realizes he made a mistake.
