This scene is a textbook way on how to establish character organically. In less than two minutes the relationship between the Cliftons’ as well as Almasy’s initial callousness has been established. People criticize the film for being too long, but I appreciate the time and detail that is put into the development of each character and their relationships with one another. Characters make many important decisions throughout the runtime and none of it feels out of character, which is a testament to that development.
It takes a certain type of maturity to appreciate this movie. This is not meant for all. I watched this for the first time when I was younger (in my early 20s) and thought it was long and boring. I was wondering why they couldn't have cast a more beautiful "eye-candy" girl as the lead, since there were so many sex scenes. Now, more than a decade later, this movie is my favorite of all time. And I think Kristin Scott Thomas was perfectly cast. She is certainly one of the most beautiful, mature women I have seen on screen, ever. I would love to have a lover like that (I mean Kristin) in my life.
I don’t find Almasey callous in this scene, maybe a bit rough around the edges but not callous. “There you have me” says a lot about his object of desire as well as his amusing ‘cheekiness’...can’t think of a better word .
Katherine grandly arrives in a plane gifted by her parents. Temporarily queen of the dessert, she's on another level. Her husband plays waiter, uncorks champagne then hunkers down to her throne to pay his respects. She gives approval to the count, "impressed" with his lack of adjectives but he grounds her down to his level by retorting something is still something in front of something. She counter banters with adjectives that changes the definition of looove. And he kinda says touche. They've met their match. Game on.
“Now there you HAVE me”. Excellent script... His intended emphasis being on ‘there’ but the hidden and unintentional meaning is clear... This film has everything. Even the title has a layered and beautiful message!
Mau rice, yes, but what about the title? Who is the patient he or she? Or is language only a way of expression after all : "What's in a name?" The soul transcends it all 🗺 . 🕯🤴🏼👸🏻🕯.
I had the privilege of enjoying this amazing film on the big screen, at a theater in Westwood CA, when first released. For me it's a timeless classic, the casting, direction, acting , screen play, music score . Made it possible to win Nine Academy Awards, to this day I find it impossible to understand: Why Kristin Scott Thomas and Ralph Fiennes, did win Oscars for best actress and best actor in leading roles. KST and RF were a stunningly attractive and talented couple.
The acting from KST was so on point . She clearly establishes she does not feel that romantic spark for her husband just by her body language and and that she almost from the outset is enthralled by Almasty just by the way her face just lights up when introduced and the way she engages him afterwards almost as if her husband is now invisible and in the way.
This, along with Good Will Hunting, is why Miramax is a great film production/distribution company! Hey, Miramax, it’d be nice to have more films like TEP and GWH. Thanks!
He has alot of great performances to choose from. The English Patient, Schindlers List, Red Dragon, In Bruges, hell even Harry Potter where he pretty much steals every scene he's in.
It's strange that the role I mostly remember him for is Ramases in The Prince of Egypt, especially when I hear his voice. Maybe it's just because that movie was such a huge part of my childhood.

I agree. All-in-all, the film is practically perfect
Who criticizes it for being long? Don't watch it if you cannot enjoy it

One of the finest movies of all time. Very classy.
When Catherine says, "platonic love" she is describing her marriage.
this movie blew my mind. about as good as it gets
Have you ever been in love with two people at once? What an utterly confusing experience. This move underscored all of it.It blew my mind too
Ralph Fiennes is gorgeous 😍
Can we please discuss the three gloriously beautiful men here...delightful. Absolutely delightful!
Kate Conway Ikr?! Each one, absolutely glorious and it made it one of my favorite films!
Totally 💚😍

Magnificent movie. Will become a permanent classic, like Casablanca.
Best film ever ❤
Totally agree!

Lmao the subtitles translate Count Almasy to Console Mushy 🤣

Omg omg 🤣 it's almost midnight and I just burst out loud at this.
Sir Ralph Fiennes is handsome here
This, unfortunately, will not be what Ralph Fiennes will be remembered for.
He has alot of great performances to choose from. The English Patient, Schindlers List, Red Dragon, In Bruges, hell even Harry Potter where he pretty much steals every scene he's in.
I'll remember him for this role above all others. He's in his prime and gorgeous!
I think he played the part in Schindler's List so devastatingly that unfortunately it tends to eclipse the rest of his work
It's strange that the role I mostly remember him for is Ramases in The Prince of Egypt, especially when I hear his voice. Maybe it's just because that movie was such a huge part of my childhood.
A Bigger Splash and Quiz Show, both extremely underrated and real gems.
How to not have affair if that’s how the man looks like.
