I almost walked out of "The Hoax" starring Richard Gere because I felt like the plot was going nowhere halfway through but I stuck around and...yeah... it went nowehere. I walked out of Earth, the animal documentary, because I thought James Earl Jones narration was distracting for some reason. Nothing against Jones but I think he just spoke non-stop and I couldn't enjoy watching the animals so I walked out.
The first and only movie I walked out on was Beloved. I know ppl who have read the book and loved it! That movie was brutal, weird and long. I actually sat through The English Patient in a small arthouse movie theater. I think it actually had some foldable chairs in the theater bc the movie was so popular they really wanted to pack ppl in for each show. I was so happy when I saw that Elaine hated The English Patient. There were too many ppl loving that awful movie! Booooo!!!

It's how I felt about the Lord of The Rings. I watched it twice with friends at a house and left both times (in a respectful manner) and even tried to watch it alone but I could never get past the halfway mark. I understand why people love the movies but the genre (Medieval, middle-Earth) isn't for me.
I love this episode because it mirrored my own life. I remember sitting through The English Patient being bored out of my skull and wondering what all the hype was about. I couldn't wait for it to end. I remember I saw it with a girlfriend and my mom and saying afterward "this is going to be one of those films that for some reason wins the best picture Oscar but that nobody watches more than once."
The movies that did it for me were Enchanted April and Vincent & Theo. Like watching paint dry. I never had any interest in seeing the English Patient. And every time I see a movie that won Oscars for unfathomable reasons (like Shakespeare in Love) I always have to see if Harvey Weinstein's name is attached., because he used to buy Oscar wins. Sure enough, he was Executive Producer of The English Patient.

This episode is the story of my life, I hate a lot of movies people like and they hate me for it, and I like a lot of movies people hate and they hate me for it too. I mean, some movies I like but can understand why people don't like them, which is why most of the time I say "Well I like it, but then again I have bad taste." When we met up with our friends later, they lectured us for not liking the movie. No one- I mean NO ONE- understood how we thought it was so overrrated. This Seinfeld episode came out a couple weeks later and I felt so vindicated!!!!

How many times have you been flipping channels and land on Titanic, which is sometimes being shown by, say, TBS, multiple times in succession. Nobody has ever done that with The English Patient. In fact I challenge anyone who claims to have liked The English Patient to admit that they have never once watched it again.
