  • Lots of people ask about patterns for knife sheaths. There is no set pattern because most of the knives out there worthy of a custom sheath are custom-made knives. This video will show you how to make a leather knife sheath starting with making the pattern.
    The knife used in this video was made by Scott Davidson of SolidRock knives. solidrockknives.com/ (678) 316-1318

    This is exactly what I needed to work out the fine points of my sheaths. Thanks for this video

    I just recently started working with leather full-time. Your videos are the best I've found. Encouraging and easy to follow. I am making my brother a knife sheath for Christmas. This video was what I needed, thanks.

    The tip on the French edger is great. Never had or thought I needed one until now.

    Might I suggest using your wing divider, set at the desired width, and then tracing the knife outline, thus making a light score in the cardboard and eliminating the need for all of the measuring, dots, and connecting said dots.

    This is the same process I've used for making knife sheaths for years, it's almost like you watched one of my old videos. I guess I'm in good company.

    People always give me a look when I tell them I keep a fixed blade knife in every vehicle. Was happy to hear you say this will be in the storage area of my truck.

    Damascus steel originated in Damascus, Syria about 900 AD. Great video, will use it to make sheaths for some daggers. Thank you.

    Nice one Aaron, I really like the "incidental patter" that you narrate your video's with. Up here in Ontario Canada, I'm a self taught leather guy. Your vids have helped me tune up my work. Thanx

    Enjoyed it! You have really helped me progress. One little trick I use instead of pen or pencil is one of those sewing chalk rollers. Leaves a thin chalk line to cut out your leather and then just wipes right off.

    Great information for the beginner to understand making patterns and how and why knife sheaths carry a welt. You are wrong on one point tough, every man "NEEDS" a well made hatchet....

  • @gregsmith284
    @gregsmith284 ปีที่แล้ว

    I add a welt to the back piece that the front curvature of the handle will rest on. Skived to an edge

    If you follow the line of the welt at the point end you can make it two pieces that will save leather

    • @makersleathersupply1220
      @makersleathersupply1220  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I dont like making it 2 pieces because it adds a small detail of having to make the 2 pieces butt up perfectly when sewing it together.

    How would you go about doing a sheath like the original one that is on this knife? I had a buddy order one like that and I haven't received the knife yet but I'm somewhat lost on how to account for the difference in girth between the blade and handle

  • @maddawgnoll
    @maddawgnoll ปีที่แล้ว

    I find knife sheaths are one of the most common orders I get. I've made some really cool designs, but I would prefer not to make knife sheaths. First off, it's like you said. Each knife is different. Then there's the cost of time involved vs the value of the product. Because I have to make a pattern every time, I'm spending more time than I want for the price I can get. The exception, people that buy custom knives are usually willing to spend the money. But there's the customer that just wants leather instead of the kydex/plastic sheath it came with, but they only spent 50 bucks on the knife. Those customers are the hardest because the sheath costs more than the knife. I get a lot of those customers.

      Lol MadDawg…. Since I got into leather work because of knife making….that is primarily what I build. Have been getting more into wallets and those kind of things

    the handle on this knife im doing is thick. should the welt be as thick as that or just enough to cover the blade.

    • @makersleathersupply1220
