They do a dress rehearsal from 930 to 11 (or something like that) with an audience. They use the dress audience reactions to decide which sketches to keep and which ones to toss. My guess is that this sketch went over better with the dress audience.
SMG has always had such natural comedic talent. I would like to have seen her on a successful sit-com. She was briefly in one with Robin Williams, but unfortunately that didn't work out.
