He's not even irresponsible. Dangling his kid out of a helicopter was clearly deliberate. I can't remember perfectly but I think the family might be rich so maybe the Dad dropping the kid was his attempt to get rid of him and keep his riches forever.
Ever since I watched this episode I thought that injured baby Kangaskahn was the actual baby of the giant one that raised Tommy. Since she didn't have a baby at the start, but suddenly did at the end, after Brock had healed it
Ugh, all the things you'd have to do in order to fix this episode; 1) I think it would have been better if the baby Kangaskhan was either stolen by poachers or if you want to get grimdark, killed. And Tommy gets stolen by a heartbroken Kangaskhan as a baby while his family was on a safari. It would tie in Jenny much better too. 2) Make the parents less stupid, but clearly violating rules because they've been searching for their kid for years in the reserve and refuse to give up hope to find their kid. I think they should have been your standard parents with a missing child. 3) Have Jenny and Tommy's parents have a relationship based on finding their kid, like Jenny has spend the better part of a decade helping them find one kid but she's tired of the search because she hasn't found any clues to whether Tommy is dead or alive. 4) When Tommy is finally found, the parents try and fail to get Tommy to return home but Tommy isn't interested 5) Kangaskhan who meets Tommy's parents senses the pain of losing a child and remembers the day she took Tommy from them, tries to return him to his parents Now you could do a few different endings; 1) Keep the original direction of the episode, Tommy's parents stay with him because they don't want to rip Tommy apart from his new chosen family, but also because of their obsessive search for their son, they have spent most of their money hiring detectives and buying trips to the reserve, fallen out of society because people suspect that Tommy's parents were the main suspects in Tommy's disappearance, and that maybe human society is actually overrated. 2) Have Tommy realize that maybe he should leave with his biological parents and have him weigh his chosen family vs his biological one. Ultimately ending with him leaving the reserve and Kangaskhan having finally moved on from losing her own child. 3) Jenny adopts Tommy herself to give him the human care and socialization he'll need, rehabilitate Tommy, but also keep him close to his chosen family of Pokemon. Honestly, the episode doesn't even really need Ash or Team Rocket for that matter.

Ever since I watched this episode I thought that injured baby Kangaskahn was the actual baby of the giant one that raised Tommy. Since she didn't have a baby at the start, but suddenly did at the end, after Brock had healed it
I think the single best way to summarize this episode is; "You had one job, ONE JOB!"
Ugh, all the things you'd have to do in order to fix this episode;
1) I think it would have been better if the baby Kangaskhan was either stolen by poachers or if you want to get grimdark, killed.
4) When Tommy is finally found, the parents try and fail to get Tommy to return home but Tommy isn't interested
5) Kangaskhan who meets Tommy's parents senses the pain of losing a child and remembers the day she took Tommy from them, tries to return him to his parents
Now you could do a few different endings;
1) Keep the original direction of the episode, Tommy's parents stay with him because they don't want to rip Tommy apart from his new chosen family, but also because of their obsessive search for their son, they have spent most of their money hiring detectives and buying trips to the reserve, fallen out of society because people suspect that Tommy's parents were the main suspects in Tommy's disappearance, and that maybe human society is actually overrated.
