This video very clearly explains the difference in performance between onewheel XR and GT, with the XR analogous to the S18 (old battery) and GT analogous to the S18 (molicel). The battery performance difference manifests with the exact symptoms described here.
I got the XL Kai pads for my S18. Love them! They replace the lower X shaped pads the wheel comes with, so they look like they were made for it from the factory. I got the molicel version a few weeks ago and really enjoy it, I live in a strange area to ride and most of my riding is around my yard and in the woods beside my house, since the S22 has been delayed I went for the 18 molicel for it's better torque (hopefully) and lighter weight and I'm glad I did. This is great! Also worth noting that the S18 has only 3 packs in parallel. The max current available is only 3x the cell rating. Most other wheels have 4or more. So it’s even more important here to have it available. Original s18 can only achieve a nominal power of 1800w (up to 4800w for 10s) even though the motor is rated at 2200w (5000peak). So it was always throttled. They went for the spec of 1100wh over performance… inmotion did the same, v11 had cutouts (they actually gave the community a choice, it chose poorly). Gotway broke the trend by putting mixed packs in the exn to increase power delivery available. Now we’re given a choice, it’s much appreciated.
Voltage sag is very important. The electric power delivered is Watts = voltage x current.(amps) . The motor has windings, the controller has resistance and transients, the battery has interconnects, and connecting everything is wiring and connectors. Measurable resistance is everywhere. The losses due to resistance (heat) are amps (squared) x resistance. As the voltage sags, the amps go up to deliver the same power, but the resistance losses (heat) rise exponentially. So, if the voltage sags 10&, the amps rise 10% but the heat generated rises by 21%. Resistance rises with temperature. So, more power is consumed in resistance losses which reduces the voltage getting to the motor which must be compensated by more amps to maintain power. This goes around in circles and can lead to thermal runaway. This is the primary reason our wheels have increased voltage. However, high voltage MOSFETS are more expensive and there are diminishing returns for increasing the voltage. Motors also generate back emf which is a generator effect. The faster these motors run, the more back emf or blocking voltage is generated. Back emf is the reason you have a no load speed when you lift a running wheel. You cannot eliminate resistance, but its one of the trade off choices that have to be made by the manufacturer. Changing the battery pack is about the only thing you can to about it as a consumer.
Great video, I have a Sherman just over one year old but found myself wanting a suspension wheel last November, I didn’t want to take a risk on a first edition s20 so went for the s18. Hey Jimmy, loved the video, but was hoping to get your thoughts on power delivery, tourque and range vs. the original version. Penny for your thoughts?
I set a current alarm on EUC World of 20A to alert me if I am using the amount of current I have chosen to limit myself to. Actually for the most part this works fine and I still have some head room if I need it. I tend to get around 26 miles on a charge from the LG batteries but I'm not a particularly aggressive rider, I tend to ride in the 20-26mph range when I'm on a run. Slower off road. Off road the S18 is the business, even with the new wheels coming out they are too big to surpass it. I don't use jump pads with the S18, what I have done is put Nylonove Spike Footplates on it, which made all the difference.
that speed lock seems like a really good idea since i see this as a new user wheel. light weigh, better battery and decent size wheel. its like "hey, learn how to ride this slowly first. then after putting in the training and learning, then ill let you go faster". very smart.

You should really include a range test. Would it match the range of my Nik+? Are these new cells safer (not bursting into flames in the middle of the night)? Perhaps they need to release a new version of the S18 with more robust parts, better pads and the information display from the S20. Your review is called "Is the Molicel battery upgrade worth it?" but then doesn't answer that very question.
Jimmy Chang, i love youre contents and videos... but i feel a little let down i would have expect maybe another 2/3 days for you to test and get the real world data since alot of us already know about the s18 hope to see what those p42 actually does better!!!
I sold my s18 for a RSt cos it was pretty bad (or maybe not so good is a better descrip) for the type of mtb climbs I put it thru. A number of hills where my bud (weighs 70+lbs more) on his RSt smokes me, my s18 would literally give up 1/2 way up the climb. If this s18 SE can get close to the torque of the RSt, I wouldn't have sold it. Don't need range for em dirt fun stuff but torque, light weight & nimbleness are a must which the RSt have in spades. Comfort ie. suspension is a nice bonus as all
I persoannly would like to thank Ewheels for sending wrist gaurds with my V11. Otherwise, I would have underestimated their importance. I now know. Thanks Jason and Ewheels for caring enough to do that. Now, when can I get this battery upgrade for my V11? HUH?
Great video! Did not know these types of PEVs were more than just a niche martket. That said, I'm interested in getting one but are they actually street-legal(?) Reason I ask, I would hate to spend $2k+ only to find out they are not street legal :'(
The Molicel P42A can handle 30 to 40 amps, but that translates into 90 to 120 amps with the 20S3P configuration. The S18 controller board and motor can't handle this, so the fuses remain at 20 amps, translating into 60 amps for the controller and motor (actually 66 amps, since blade fuses are spec'ed to run 100+ hours at 110% current rating). The controller board is going to limit this further still, but I don't know by how much. If it can handle 60 amps, then at 60 amps, based on testing, a 50E or M50T battery pack will sag about 14 volts, while a P42A pack will sag about 9 volts, so a P42A pack can output the same power with 5 volts less battery charge. The unknown here is what the peak power that the controller will allow.
@@TroubleshootGamingMeds for sure the Niko been a 100v it’s a better wheel no doubts….but the recents news of Nikolas getting on fire it’s the reason to think it twice. I will wait for your further update 🙏
@@oshintaoo hey I'm back! Rode the new molicel nik about 50 miles. Honestly I feel no difference in range, power, torque or anything. I would still purchase it over 16x, as these battery packs should still be "safe" but don't expect it to outperform a regular old Nikola in any way.
Is this wheel now safer for a heavier 210lb rider who rides around 25mph. Or is the upgraded battery still not enough buffer for this weight of rider. Thanks !
I am 220 lbs and have been riding my S18 for 9 months. I average around 20mph, but on most rides I will hit 28mph or higher for at least a little bit. Never had a cut out. I charge it whenever it is around 50%. I did ride it all the way down to 2% once, but kept it real slow as the battery depleted. I don't ride super aggressive, but I have my fun! This is with the old battery cells.
Hi Jimmy, watching this I got homesick for my old S18 that I had previouslysold. Amazing that your son is in college already! The big question I have is what is the range you'll be able to get on this with a molicel versus the stock batteries. With the stock I was able to ride it to 45 miles of range with 0% remaining so very interested to see how far you could get with the Molicell.
I have the Molicel S18. In two real world range tests I got about 38 miles using 98% battery, and 31 miles on another trip using 93% battery. The good thing was I could still go up to 20 mph safely at under 10% battery left. I weigh 190ish with gear, temp in 70s, Medium Ride Setting.
@@jcfpwarriorpoet I'm the same weight and stats, I think what you're saying is that you'll get less range but you'll be able to go faster the entire time
@@mikeintampa250 Yes, and you can hit bumps, accelerate, etc without cutout worry. I went from 6mph to 31.2 mph as fast as I could to replicate Wongway’s near cutout where he dropped from 77% battery to 6% in a few seconds. When I tried that with the Molicels, battery stayed at 96% the whole time. I was also hitting speed bumps at 18-20mph at low battery without any power stats dipping. So, for me, having little less range but fully usable is awesome trade.
@@jcfpwarriorpoet that is very cool, but what I discovered over time for me at least is that I'm into range. But the s18 will always have a special place in my heart it is such a great wheel.

does this limited edition use the same Controller board as the old one we have? if so, maybe battery upgrade can make the old S18 shine again, because I love to ride my S18 even though my inmotion V12 HT is here since last week.
The very short explanation why high voltage is better. Power of leakage = I^2 × R. So less the current , less the leakage Power in a square dependence. But to reduce the current , you should increase the voltage. That's why high voltage is better.
Price tag aside, are there any downsides to using this is a beginner's wheel? I seem to fall in the category of "heavier rider" at 220lbs so I've been contemplating something like this or the V11 to learn on.
So what exactly is the difference? I only saw 14 added miles or is that coming out in your next video? I have the S-18 I love the wheel but would like more power and twice the distance.

@@omidel. the first 30 minutes I loved it as I was making tons of progress. Then for a few hours I was aggravated because my wheel was large and heavy, making it hard to learn. but i feel a little let down i would have expect maybe another 2/3 days for you to test and get the real world data since alot of us already know about the s18 hope to see what those p42 actually does better!!!
Looking forward to a more detailed review! Do these cells also increase the maximum speed?
Does not increase top speed.
such a great video as always!
using my S18 for daily city commute and trails during summer... after 3.600 km ridden i can really tell the batterylife is getting lower.
Hi! Do you know if they sell these battery packs separately so older S18 wheels can be upgraded?
They do, just ask.
yea.. that might be he FULL solution.. P42A's in the S18...
Awesome 😎 thanks brother 🙏
That said, I'm interested in getting one but are they actually street-legal(?) Reason I ask, I would hate to spend $2k+ only to find out they are not street legal :'(
E-wheels does NOT always send wrist guards with their unis. I didn’t get any when I received my s18 from them
Could you list your safety gear and where to buy them in all your video
I had the option to get the special edition but I didn't see any information regarding it so I went with the other one for more range.....
My first take of the euc was that it looked like full face helmet.
*can we switch our old version ks s18's battery with molicel p42 ? I hope the answer is yes.*
Waiting for ur next video molicell s18
I am so so curious about this wheel. Can't wait for a range test
You didn't mention any of the differences from the regular cells in your review. I thought you were going to test this new battery.
I just got a Nikola with molicel packs today from ewheels. Gonna see how it feels tomorrow.
Please please please if you could update how are you going with that 🙏 I’m not sure between the KS16X or Nikola + (Molicel battery) .
@@oshintaoo I would go with the Nikola over the 16x even if it had the normal battery packs. But I'll be bsck here later with my impressions.
nikola plus for sure. sidewalk Ferrari!
Thanks ! Do you know if it's possible ton convert and old version with the molicel ?
did not really learn if the molicel battery upgrade is worth it?
I have the inmotion v11 but this is tempting to get 🤔
Is this wheel now safer for a heavier 210lb rider who rides around 25mph. Or is the upgraded battery still not enough buffer for this weight of rider. Thanks !
Battery would not be enough buffer and your range will suffer and create a more dangerous situation for you.
@@jcfpwarriorpoet I ride s18 if my avg speed is 15mph I could muster 45miles on floridas flat roads, If my avg speed goes up to 18mph I only get 35miles in range.
Sir let me tell you why I dislike you. I am a heavily invested Eskater and before watching this video I HATED unicycles. You are so good at what you do , I am now beginning to like them , hence you broke my spirit. Curses !. BTW you really cool on that thing Chang ( gosh I hate to admit that).
I am trying so hard not to become one of you guys. I really am now let me get away from this video. Feels like a black rabbit hole sucking me in.
I may talk crap, but Anyways, I gave you a thumbs up.
Nice video. Any suggestion on how to lock lock the pedals up with not in use? Mine flops down when I'm pushing it around.
Just wondering about the conclusion. How much better and in what way? Can you get just the batteries to upgrade your existing S-18 if worth while?
Within the first week of riding mine, it had a nasty cut out which threw me on my face (happened as I tried to accelerate hard after upgrading pads.) Hope you don't have that happen.
Do you have the molicel version?
@@bcork9381 yes I do.
How much for the battery only?
They definitely make a difference with my high end flashlights.
I want to see a range test. I think 1800wh would be a better option. This wheel is more for recreation than for daily use
does this limited edition use the same Controller board as the old one we have? if so, maybe battery upgrade can make the old S18 shine again, because I love to ride my S18 even though my inmotion V12 HT is here since last week.
Do you think you could upgrade the old batteries for the new upgraded ones????.
That thing is sick. Beginner friendly?
I think it's too nice and a little fragile to be a first EUC, but I know people that have done it.
@@freshlycharged thanks that us what I thought. Any thoughts on a beginner one?
Does the news version with the hollow motor of steel based on the same cell and any information on how this new mix is delivering?
Hi, did you make a range test from 100% to 30% when the FW will slow down the wheel ?
Please tell me the new pack has a higher voltage!!! If it is the same as the old, it has less capacity...
great video! Also, maybe consider adding chapters to future vids?
⚡🤙🏼🤙🏼⚡
*I'd rather a lower capacity battery than a bigger capacity battery with less "usable" range.*
That random guy was so cute and wholesome
The very short explanation why high voltage is better. Power of leakage = I^2 × R. So less the current , less the leakage Power in a square dependence. But to reduce the current , you should increase the voltage. That's why high voltage is better.
ugh I can pre-ordered one, but it would shit at the end of freaking August, and since I have no wheel atm, I dont think I want to wait that long 😭
Price tag aside, are there any downsides to using this is a beginner's wheel? I seem to fall in the category of "heavier rider" at 220lbs so I've been contemplating something like this or the V11 to learn on.
I feel like this video was incomplete as others have mentioned, hope to see a follow up video soon.
Just an unboxing and impressions video. Review in the works!
So what exactly is the difference? I only saw 14 added miles or is that coming out in your next video? I have the S-18 I love the wheel but would like more power and twice the distance.
Jut got mine in from ehweels! Thanks for the video im just learning how to ride this thing and i realy appreciate the video! Can someone out there direct me in the right direction for the spiked pedal pads? THANKS!
are all the s18´s on sale new that are rated 1110W, molicel versions ?
Wow!!! I'm gonna change my battery choice for the Master I ordered.
I think that the Master, unlike the S18, has so much torque available that you have to ride seriously hard to feel the difference
@@DuffMan-lh9lc its not just about the torque, when you cruise at high speed you are also asking a lot from the battery and as it drains the 50s cant deliver and you risk a nasty cutout.
@@DuffMan-lh9lc Do you think it will increase or decrease the range?
@@BigChiefWiggles didn't think about it because I don't like going high speed on gravel roads, it can be a valid point, but in that case you can buy a 40T pack and have comparable performance while saving lot of bucks.
Anyway, my 50E Master will hopefully arrive in June, we'll see!
@@PatVachon based on previous experience in RC things, it will decrease it. Voltage sag is a thing, but not as relevant until you pull that throttle really really hard; but if you do it, range will never be enough anyway.
We learnt it the hard way doing range competitions on RC FPV planes, high cap li-ion cells were a must.
I ride a standard s18 and have been concerned with the safety margin of the 3p pack, I am 70kg lightweight and as an older person do not push the wheel hard, but am getting close to top speed often and would like to be able to accelerate a bit more harder at times, According to EUC World my typical max current usually doesn't exceed 15amp, could this be correct ?? just cruising along at 30+ kph current is about 6amps again according to EUC world which is I assume just reading the kingsong firmware output. if the readings can be trusted I seem to have plenty of overhead , any opinion on this??
have you done any videos on being safe with charging and the batteries in general?
How is tht pump you used compared to the one tht comes with the master ?
can you do a range test for the new battery
Molicel for the S22 pro?
I'm lookin to get a ECU, the Sherman Max is the one I'm thinking about. What is a good cheap-ish ECU to get to learn on? Or is the Sherman Max a good One Time Buy?
Buy it...at first you will hate it ..but after a while you will love it.
@@omidel. the first 30 minutes I loved it as I was making tons of progress. Then for a few hours I was aggravated because my wheel was large and heavy, making it hard to learn. At this point I wished that I got a smaller wheel. Then, the next day, after just a little more practice, it was second nature to ride and it is my favorite form of transportation. I am so glad I bought the fast heavy wheel and not a small "learner" as I would have very quickly reached the limits of a cheaper wheel
The Kingsong 16x is the ultimate EUC when starting out.. or anytime really. It's a tourque monster, super manageable and the most fun wheel I have. Best of luck : )
Molicel packs are awesome. These packs will make the S18 revitalized and finally a decent wheel.
Max load 91kg? Not 120kg?
How much range can you get out of it?
He’s your son? I just thought it was two young guys reviewing EUC
You are too kind!
Dude... You didn't even talk about it how it compares to a regular S18 and just covered what we already know about the S18. Kind of frustrating. I'm hoping you will cover this later.
Just an unboxing and impressions video. Review in the works!
@@freshlycharged We never got that review....
so this or the s11?
