Thanks for joining me on another hike and photo opportunity. This week I make the slightly hairy drive up Wrynose Pass to hike another 3 Wainwright's in my attempt to tick off all 30 in the Southern fells.

What a beautiful place, I drove over the pass on a motorcycle, many years ago, and I thought it was magical. Some wonderful photos, a great commentary, as always, and the music was perfect 👌

Great place that Darren. I know the first time I went there on that road with then wife before we married in her 1.3 escort encore, parts I was in second gear thinking I'd have to go to first.
Went back 4years ago with kids. Stunning place.

Your enthusiasm is contagious. The lake district and fells are so photogenic and exhilarating, that I would love to visit someday. We have the Appalachian mountains here in the northeastern USA and although they are equal or greater in height than the fells they are for the most part covered in trees making them difficult to photograph.

Another great video Darren. My trip in mid May was just awesome, and I'm getting back there in September for a week. It'll be low level for me as my old age (knackard joints and back,) prevents me from safely topping any hills. But your videos bring back fond memories of when I was teenager and up, having weekends out of my backpack in the hills.

Nice one mate. This is definitely a cracking wee hike and when the conditions are right, the views are fantastic.
Next time I do this one, I intend going from the bottom of wrynose, up to greenburn tarn and up wetside edge. Definitely a good choice not to go over prison band onto weatherlam, that one deserves the full hike from Tilberthwaite, or even Coniston.

Wetherlam looked great today from Tom Heights but as you know it’s wall to wall blue skies at the moment.
I’d like to do wetherlam when it has a bit more atmosphere and mood.
I’m back at the end of June and so hopefully I’ll be able to do it then.

Enjoying seeing you do these hikes. I started hiking to get to photo opportunities. Then it became more about hiking and the photography became secondary and only recently has made a return during the hikes. Enjoyed both the hike and the photography on this video even with the "claggy" weather.

Straight in with the sunrise shots, they were lovely. Think my favourite is the shot at 8:08 with the lovely light on those clouds above the peaks. Really great video mate. Will we ever see in the Fens again, thats the question!

I'm envious. I'm just getting too stiff to do much summit bagging. My ego takes me uphill and my body just resents it. Lovely images. I particularly like the hills and cloud at 8:10. Really enjoying your pure pleasure at being back on the hills.
I remember (at least I think I remember, could be memory playing tricks) driving up Wrynose pass in a clapped out Astra estate twenty plus years ago, willing the engine to the top and then having to park for half an hour to let it cool down. At least you can see what's coming. You should drive the single track road from Aberfoyle to Loch Arklet. Looks flat and quite straight on a map, in practice multitudes of wee blind bends and summits; with a 30 foot drop to the dark waters of several lochs on the way. I want a sunset at Loch Arklet but I'm literally too scared to drive back in the dark.
Hopefully you'll take Helen back up that mountain you walked up so many years ago, you're an old romantic at heart ;-)
For me it was about 35 years ago in a beat up Ford Fiesta. Like you, just willing it to make the top and preying the clutch would handle the hill starts on Hardknott pass 😆
We’re both doing Wetherlam later on in the year but today we’re hiking Dow Crag and the Old man with our son and daughter-in-law.

@@DarrenKnightPhoto The smell of burning clutch fluid still is one of my panic triggers. I had to reverse down the first 100 meters of Hardknott Pass in an underpowered Mini that just wasn't going to make it. :-/

It’s really busy here at the moment. We’re up for a week and I’ve personally never seen it this busy. Campsites are packed, fields are packed and so are the lay-bys.
2021 is definitely the year of the staycation

We headed to Bempton Cliffs at the weekend and the whole area was rammed, although thankfully not at 4 in the morning! I think we'll hold off heading to the lakes for a little while, although we're heading up to Scotland next week, really can't wait, but I'm sure it will be busy there too! S.
Another enjoyable video Darren. I envy all those within reach of the Lake District! I live in the southeast, next to the Ashdown Forest which is pretty, but just doesn't do it for me photographically! I need mountains!

I hear you.
The lakes are approximately a 600 mile round trip for me and that’s why I was hiking in snowdonia as it’s only 400.
However, they are both stunning and both worth the time it takes to get there.
Hopefully you’ll be able to visit one or the other shortly

Great video Darren, some lovely shots, those black and whites are great, I tried some myself recently when the weather was moody but a bit wet but I just can’t seem to either get the shot or process them. Something for me to work on. Thanks for the inspiration.

Stuart McGlennon says that BW’s don’t sell as people don’t want a cold photo hanging in their homes (I get that) but I simply love them.
I think they some up the cold and wet British landscape perfectly
Keep practising mate and I’m sure you’ll improve over time. Photography is a slow learning process

@@DarrenKnightPhoto Thanks, I saw that on the Pubcast but it must be nice to have it as an option. I think I probably need to go out with black and white only as a target to get my eye in then take to TH-cam to find some processing help. I was chatting about B&W with one of my students yesterday (I’m a driving instructor) she has just completed her A’ Level photography and focussed on B&W, shooting film then dodging and burning in the darkroom, she also suggested a couple of photographers work to look at to try and get my eye in. It’s great how Photography spans such an age range and promotes conversation on an equal level.
That’s more like it. Plenty of moody stuff. A pretty nice start as well at Wrynose with the sunrise. Think the shot of the day was at around 3:40, lovely that one. It has to be one of my favourite hikes for same reasons you said. 2 points before I go. What’s a carn? and not sure about the blind man sticks. 😬😬👍 A good mate, again a well made video 👍
No mood in the lakes today mate. It’s wall to wall sunshine and heaving with people.
A good day the leave the camera at home and just enjoy the walk, which is exactly what I’m going to do.
FYI- A carn is Latin for Cairn.........bloody Northerners 👋🍺
