Nice work. Can you tell me how you closed the two back side seams? I didn't see it in the video. Also, so I understand correctly, the force of the airbag will automatically break through the side seams? If so, do you use a lightweight thread, or a heavy upholstery thread?

    • @oldschoolautoupholstery

Thank you! I sew it as a normal french seam with regular machine thread. The airbag deployment is very forceful and destructive. It will either split the thread, destroy the vinyl at the perforation, or split the vinyl.

If you pull the seat to make a damage repair, not air bag related, can you disconnect the air bag without fear of activating the air bag? Or does a dealership have to disconnect and reconnect air bag? Want to make a repair on side bolster with a side airbag

    • @oldschoolautoupholstery

Hello Todd, Personally, I never disconnect the yellow airbag wire. I do the work while the seat is in the car. I don't want to pain my customers by having to take the car to have the airbag light reset. I never disconnect the battery. It is not because I am afraid of setting off an air bag. That has never happened in 25 years of working on air bag seats. Great video, as always!! 😍😍😍
About this airbag cover procedure, I've read that OEMs that manufacture car covers have very special and precise procedures tu stitch airbag covers, and the machine is computer controller so that it prints a label showing the exact information for this stitch, tension, length... to monitor every single operation, and that is why most shops do not resew airbag covers, as if there is a problem in the airbag deployment, it can be very dangerous for the person in the seat.
I also read that they use a special thread, made from cotton, which breaks easily when the airbag deploys. Perhaps you could investigate a little bit about that, and perhaps use cotton read, just in case there is a problem in one of the seats that you redo? 😉
You are great, and I would like you not to have a single problem if an airbag seat cover that you have repaired does not deploy correctly, especially in a "sue happy" country like the USA 😅😅

@@oldschoolautoupholstery I have personally seen a repaired seam that did not separate as the factory seam would have and it prevented the air bag from deploying properly! Thankfully the seat was unoccupied at the time so no one was at risk of injury. I personally examined the cover and it appeared to be restitched exactly as it originally was, but it definitely didn't break apart as it should have! A lot of people use a lighter weight cotton or nylon thread for sewing the seams, but I'd still be hesitant!

@@richardmccabe270 Hello Richard, I have been sewing ever since the seat airbag was invented. Never a problem. Not even one. Please keep liking and watching!

Hello Val, Yes they are the same. No rocket science here. I use pre wound bobbins. Thanks for watching!
