What a great idea!! I may try to use a piano hinge or some form of hidden hinge as I'm not a fan of them showing on the top, but this build has my brain juices flowing.
Awesome project! I love the fact that your projects are practical and projects that everyone can do. So many people are making projects with big expensive tools that not everyone can afford. I always look forward to seeing what you’re going to build next. Like you I do t have a jointer but you can use your planer to flatten twisted wood by making a jointing sled. It’s a simple build and takes the place of a jointer.

The only place my wife's electric piano fits in our condo is in our hallway. It's fully exposed and looks ugly with the cheap stand and always gets dusty. Can't wait to build this with hand tools and surprise her for our wedding anniversary! (I'll get some S4S lumber though, that looks like a lot of work by hand otherwise! haha)
I'll admit when the notification popped up I thought it was a flip flop stand and since we live in Texas the wife has a LOT that I thought this would help with.. LOL but it's a nice keyboard stand
What an awesome idea. loved it all but just in case you want you can put hidden hinges so you don't see the on top. Over all I think it's a great idea and may just have to build one for my niece . I have a full size one and I wish I didn't because of the large footprint. Multi purpose is the way to go.4
Thanks so much! I looked at several different ways to use hidden hinges, but none of them would work in my case due to the spacing requirements. If I had to do it over, I’d make the drawer section taller to allow more room for blocks to mount the hinges on. But...this way kept it simple and got the job done

Since you have a table saw and a planer, you can easily build sleds for either one to do the face jointing and edge jointing that you need to do with rough lumber. And, once you have them built you can use them for many future projects.

Okay, one more question/request... Have you already done a video for a matching piano bench? If not, could you? 😃 I’m imagining a similar design for the legs of the bench, but I’m at a loss after that... How do the legs meet at the seat? What thickness of wood is ideal for the seat? How can you then add some cushion and vinyl to make it comfy? I could probably figure something out if I sit with this, but I’m a woodworking noob, so I’m trusting you’ve done it well already or could do it well!!! Thanks again!!! 🙏🏾👍🏾👌🏾✌🏾
I haven’t made a bench yet. We are still using the one shown in this video. I have plans to eventually come back to build a bench for it but just haven’t decided on a design yet. The one I made shown in the video was just some poplar dowels and a 1x12 screwed into the top. I added a bed pillow on top and made a drop cloth cover for it as a cushion. It works for now 😅 but I will eventually come back and replace it.

I love this design! I just have a bigger keyboard and would want a fixed base instead of a pullout drawer. Is there a way to do this but to have a fixed base to hold the piano instead? How would you attach a fixed base to the top section?
What would you do differently, if anything if you took it one step further? Great project btw... I have a music room and need space and small desk... How about it swings flat against the wall when the guys are over and we need more room to jam. In my case this would be wider and deeper for a larger keyboard. Just a thought, I have an idea after watching this, but you are more clever. Great videos, have shared a few with my wife and she's impressed and now expects more from me!

This is a great keyboard stand. I have the x frames and they are pretty ugly. I am a female diyer who is trying to get into woodworking, so far it is a hobby so done a few things like make shelves ect. But not furniture's. So it it really nice to see another female woodworker especially using the table saw. I really want to buy a table saw but reading all these horror stories has scared the scrap out of me. But if I don't buy a table saw, I would get a track saw. But anyway, awesome build, this is something I am adding to my future builds, probably use pine or plywood. In the UK, woods are pretty expensive so would go for those 2 options. Can I ask, when you started out, was table saw the first purchase or once you got used to woodworking, you expanded on your tools. Subscribed👍

@@WoodshopDiaries Thanks for the link. I pretty much have the tools apart from a mitre saw and nail gun. I do have a corded nail gun but differently want to get a ryobi nail gun. I am going to wait until the price drops as they are pretty pricey in the UK. I use a mix of Bosch professional and Ryobi tools so whenever I do buy cordless tools, aways get from those two brands. Thankfully mitre saws are pretty cheap in the UK. I agree, I think I will put the table saw on hold for the time being. I think once I am more confortable in woodworking, then I will invest in one. I think I will look into getting a track saw instead until I am more confortable and the need for one is required. Many thanks for the response and link.

Great job! One question though; is it possible to keep the keyboard drawer from sliding back into the cabinet while you are playing it? Is there a way to lock it into place after you pull it out so that it doesnt move while you are playing it?
I'm sure there's a way to do that, but it's not been an issue for us so we haven't bothered to do anything about it. It stays in place while we play, and doesn't really slide back and forth.

Nice! I have an electric piano that’s just black. This might spice it up. Go figure...a drummer teaching himself piano. I should have started with an easier song to learn then “the luckiest” lol...getting there sloooooowly :)
That’s awesome! I’m not sure I’d have the patience to learn piano...I tried many years ago and quit pretty quick 😂 I have a lot of respect for pianists!
The stand for my digital piano is decent, but I regret not making something like this instead. One thought: in my experience, digital keyboards aren't very good for learning or practicing piano since the keys aren't properly weighted (the feel is completely different), plus they often don't have a full set of 88 keys. A "digital piano" (with fully weighted keys) is a few hundred dollars more expensive, so perhaps not great for an absolute beginner, but if your husband starts to really get into it you should probably upgrade sooner rather than later (would be good if this is sized to accommodate one of those as well).
He’s a very occasional player and we don’t have room for anything bigger in our studio style home. So at least for now, this has been excellent. May consider weighted keys in the future
@@WoodshopDiaries Glad it's been working out! If you do upgrade, just note that you won't really get anything close to the right feel with "semi-weighted" keys. I unfortunately made that mistake when buying a keyboard to take to college. Also, though they're called "digital painos" they're basically just keyboards with a full set of 88 keys and more realistic key weighting (also fewer fun synthesizer options). Compared to a keyboard with 61 full sized keys, it should only be ~14" (give or take) wider.

You can make this longer to fit your specific keyboard. But depending on how long it ends up being, you may want to consider a thicker top as the extra length may cause it to sag a little in the middle.
Hi there, I’m building your keyboard stand and I’m just wondering, did you attach the hinge hardware and top lid pieces prior to staining or did you stain the wood separate from the hardware? I’ve stained wood before, but never with hardware attached and I don’t know if it will leave any weird residue on the metal pieces... 🧐🤔 Thanks!!! 🙏🏾
I didn’t stain this piece. I just polyed it. I assembled the entire thing, then applied a few coats of clear finish. You can stain it with or without hardware. Just wipe it off if you get any on it...it’s not a huge deal 👍

Thank you! No I don’t, I’m sorry! Every piece is different so it’s hard to say what my “process” is. I actually rough sketch my ideas on paper, build it, then go back and draw the sketchup model after the fact. I hardly EVER use plans to build from.
Concealed hinges? I’d have to have mounted scrap blocks underneath the top to Mount the hinges on, and there wasn’t enough room for that AND the keyboard. I actually wanted the front to flip down and the top to flip up, but there wasn’t enough room to mount all the pieces in order to mount the hinges so I settled for this.
@@WoodshopDiaries for future jobs, you can use hidden barrel hinges 10 12 and 14mm you can also use concealed soss hinges all will work with 3/4" stock I've used both on many of builds before work great

Great job! One question though; is it possible to keep the keyboard drawer from sliding back into the cabinet while you are playing it? Is there a way to lock it into place after you pull it out so that it doesnt move while you are playing it?
I'm sure there's a way to do that, but it's not been an issue for us so we haven't bothered to do anything about it. It stays in place while we play, and doesn't really slide back and forth.

Nice! I have an electric piano that’s just black. This might spice it up. Go figure...a drummer teaching himself piano. I should have started with an easier song to learn then “the luckiest” lol...getting there sloooooowly :)
That’s awesome! I’m not sure I’d have the patience to learn piano...I tried many years ago and quit pretty quick 😂 I have a lot of respect for pianists!
The stand for my digital piano is decent, but I regret not making something like this instead. One thought: in my experience, digital keyboards aren't very good for learning or practicing piano since the keys aren't properly weighted (the feel is completely different), plus they often don't have a full set of 88 keys. A "digital piano" (with fully weighted keys) is a few hundred dollars more expensive, so perhaps not great for an absolute beginner, but if your husband starts to really get into it you should probably upgrade sooner rather than later (would be good if this is sized to accommodate one of those as well).
He’s a very occasional player and we don’t have room for anything bigger in our studio style home. So at least for now, this has been excellent. May consider weighted keys in the future
@@WoodshopDiaries Glad it's been working out! If you do upgrade, just note that you won't really get anything close to the right feel with "semi-weighted" keys. I unfortunately made that mistake when buying a keyboard to take to college. Also, though they're called "digital painos" they're basically just keyboards with a full set of 88 keys and more realistic key weighting (also fewer fun synthesizer options). Compared to a keyboard with 61 full sized keys, it should only be ~14" (give or take) wider.

You can make this longer to fit your specific keyboard. But depending on how long it ends up being, you may want to consider a thicker top as the extra length may cause it to sag a little in the middle.

It is for us. But I guess if you play pretty crazy, it may not be for you 🤷♀️ we don’t have any issues with it.

Hi there, I’m building your keyboard stand and I’m just wondering, did you attach the hinge hardware and top lid pieces prior to staining or did you stain the wood separate from the hardware? I’ve stained wood before, but never with hardware attached and I don’t know if it will leave any weird residue on the metal pieces... 🧐🤔

I didn’t stain this piece. I just polyed it. I assembled the entire thing, then applied a few coats of clear finish. You can stain it with or without hardware. Just wipe it off if you get any on it...it’s not a huge deal 👍

Thank you! No I don’t, I’m sorry! Every piece is different so it’s hard to say what my “process” is. I actually rough sketch my ideas on paper, build it, then go back and draw the sketchup model after the fact. I hardly EVER use plans to build from.

Why didn't you use hidden hinges?
Concealed hinges? I’d have to have mounted scrap blocks underneath the top to Mount the hinges on, and there wasn’t enough room for that AND the keyboard. I actually wanted the front to flip down and the top to flip up, but there wasn’t enough room to mount all the pieces in order to mount the hinges so I settled for this.
@@WoodshopDiaries for future jobs, you can use hidden barrel hinges 10 12 and 14mm you can also use concealed soss hinges all will work with 3/4" stock I've used both on many of builds before work great
Amazing as always girl! I notice you use monkey glue as apposed to the ever popular Titebond any particular reason or just what is available?
Thank you! And as far as gorilla wood glue, it’s Just my personal preference. It dries less yellow and has a faster set up time.
