    This really shows that Shane's always had this tendency to act like an asshole and never acknowledge that he did anything wrong. He thinks that because he's fat, unpopular and had a childhood trauma, that he's never the bad guy. Not when he's insulting people's appearances. Not even when he's catfishing someone in order to humiliate them.

I can’t help but feel bad and want to give them all the therapy they need to be better. Though this sympathy obviously ends when they actually hurt a child. It is a sad world that we live in and I think that they need help, not death threats.

    Denny’s is a chain of diners in the US. It’s sort of difficult to describe the place of Denny’s in our culture. Denny’s is sometimes used as cultural shorthand to impart a sense of low-classness and failure. They are known for being open 24/7 with low prices and mid to low quality food. (Though I must say that the pancakes I had at the Denny’s in South Bend, Indiana were off the hook.) As someone I saw on TV said, no one “goes out” to Denny’s on purpose. Read this when I was around 15. Massive Shane fan at the time (11 to about 16 years old). Honestly I don't remember much about what I thought of it, I just remember it feeling like I was reading the script for one of his videos. I rember knowing it was a shitty book but liking it because it was Shane. It all seems so strange now that I think about it. I was one of those people who grew up watching him and sometimes I wonder how much it affected the way I thought about things. It worries me quite a bit ngl. I know for sure that he has made me think and talk more openly about sex (idk how appropriate it was at that age) and I remeber always hiding my laptop when my parents walked by when I was watching him bc of the very sexual video titles and other disturbing stuff. Anyway, I loved hearing your takes in this video and in the previous one, especially the stuff about his christian upbringing affecting his overly sexual behavior towards children, I can totally see that. Another thing I liked is how you adressed his weird obsession with insulting people's looks. He did it a bunch in his videos at the time and I'm sure it affected my (pre)teen brain to some extent. Not good when going through puberty imma tell you that.

Because idk high schoolers make jokes like this amongst each other all time, but he doesn’t seem to understand that’s not okay to talk to or about teenagers like that at age 30.
    But just as well, that’s kinda way his teenage audience never saw anything wrong w this. Because they make sex jokes about themselves and their peers w their peers. I remember being like 11 and seeing his videos w sex jokes surrounding children but the joke to me was “oooh he said p*nis” and I missed that the joke was p*dophilia

    • @ingridmyers2708
      @ingridmyers2708 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's tough because obviously there's not too much concrete evidence but he has said himself that when he was younger he did weird stuff to kids in his neighborhood, he has admitted on his podcast to searching child p*rn, he joked about j*cking off to Willow Smith when she was a child, AND he used to have all of these forums and live streams he would do. I just really feel like the probability of him grooming underage people is very high. He had access to them in ways that people weren't ready for and normalized highly inappropriate behavior, all the while fully acknowledging that his fans were mostly kids. & when I sit back and think I don't think me or anyone I know has made any p*dophilia jokes in the sheer quantity that he has if at all, it's very easy to do "dark comedy" and live life without joking like he does and my gut really tells me it's a "where there's smoke there's fire" situation unfortunately.

    • @talynhastime9343
      @talynhastime9343 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      This is a very good point. It shows that Shane’s alleged abuse has damaged the way he relates to others in a sexual context. He doesn’t understand that there is an age/power dynamic that exists between him and a teenager. Teens joke with teens about teens, teens joke with teens about adults, but adults should never joke with teens or about teens sexually. Adults can joke with adults about *teenhood* since the hormones and spike in libido is something everyone (except asexuals) has experienced. I would say the only exception is in the world of fandom where teens and adults discuss the sex lives of their favorite characters. Which people often do.

I think he was trying to write, to the best of his ability, stories that teenagers would relate to. During my teenager years I definitely would have related to this story. Especially the emotions that he portrays rather well.
    I should put a disclaimer that I'm the opposite of a Shane Dawson supporter. I think I just have a lot of empathy for teenagers whose mistakes come back to haunt them, because I can see how easily it could have been me. I did a LOT of dumb shit on the internet with no thought of the repercussions. I've grown into a more aware adult and I'm grateful those choices don't follow me around like a shadow.
    I also acknowledge that if someone's teenage mistakes do pop up you can learn a lot about how they handle and apologize for it, and I don't believe Shane has done that adequately.
    I am really hesitant to jump on board with any opinion that shames children for bad decisions.
    The actual action of writing it in a book and continuing to make fun of the other child is... debatable. On one hand that vulgar thought process/language could be really relatable to a vindictive teen. The conclusion of Shane seeing his humanity and destroying the photo could potentially influence the mind of someone in that demographic to be kinder. The humorous conclusion diffuses the tension. On the other hand, I think you made the point for why it's disturbing quite eloquently.
    I don't know if I agree with it or not. I can see the benefit of how it was written to reach a younger audience.
    **Please don't come for me. This is just my opinion and I'm willing to engage with anyone else's opinion as long as it isn't an argument based on insults.

      It's a sensitive and delicate matter attempting to balance being sympathetic towards a persons' harmful behavior and hitting them with what's more often than not a justified and potentially helpful albeit painful condemnation. A troubled past is indeed a call for compassion, but I don't think it negates what I've said. It's up to Us (a collection of individuals) to determine how much or how little should be handed out. My only concern here is the notion that adopting this more sympathetic leaning may cascade, culturally, into a slippery slope where it goes too far in one direction and he essentially experiences little to no repercussion - which I think ultimately is a loss for Shane as well because he would miss out on educating himself and becoming more harmonious with society and therefore happier himself. Just my thoughts as well :P

      I agree with your comment however I think the real issue is his use of language- the long description of the picture seemed unnecessary and the whole tone seems off. While the example could’ve been used as a relatable lesson the language used was unacceptable, especially considering his fan base was generally 10-14 year olds at the time. :)

      I think it's different than a teenager writing stories for another teenager vs an adult writing stories. As an adult, you can observe and write about your behaviour in a different way from this. Like I would've made some jokes like "Don't be an idiot like me when I did this stupid thing" "Be better than I was when I hurt this person" for example. You can add nuances, explain the behaviour/story and why that might not always be a good thing. I think it's different when you're an adult writing about your past because by the time you come to write about it, you should've learnt and grown. Like there are many cringe things I've done, bad things as a teenager that teenage me would've been like lol vs adult me who is like I shouldn't have done this because x y and z. There are also stories that I didn't realise were truly dark until I told them to other people because that was just normal life for me or things I thought were funny but weren't because I was in a scary situation and I didn't comprehend that at the time.
      I don't know if this makes any sense but if it's a teenager writing a book for teenager, I wouldn't expect the same thing from the book from what I expect from an adult author. I expect crappy cringy jokes, awkward stories that misses the mark. Teenagers writing for teenagers can be relatable rather than adults who write for teenagers can be idolized for their gift and have a degree of power more than the average teen to teen book.
      26 Shane has power over his audience as an adult. His audience see him as an adult rather than a social peer who is on the same level as them.

      I think the bigger issue here isn't so much content but tone. As a teenager, I didn't have a healthy relationship with sex and sexuality, especially in online spaces, and I think it's fine for me as an adult to address that. However, it wouldn't be okay for me to write a book targeted at young teenagers normalizing the unhealthy sexual behaviors I engaged in as something hilarious and funny. It would be especially inappropriate for me to use my book targeted at young teenagers to graphically describe and make fun of the genitalia of a teenager.
      This will, 1, make so many kids reading think CP and sending nudes to strangers on the internet is just normal and okay. Lots of kids looked up to him, which made him a role model rather or not he signed up for that. And, 2, how many AMAB people will read that passage and become self-conscious about themselves? While he was trying to make fun of one kid that he seems to hate for some irrational reason, he tells a whole group of young people that their genitalia may be gross and worthy of scorn and mocking, which is an awful message to send to a group of already self-conscious and vulnerable people.

    Often times, people who are victims of sexual abuse have blurred lines about what’s sexually appropriate. Perhaps his childhood made him sexually repressed, but I wonder if this fixation on children isn’t actually from another trauma than religious

    I never read the book, but my little sister was a big fan of his. I remember her being extremely excited when the book came out and even bought it early. After she read it, I found it interesting that she just stopped being a fan of his and didn't really like talking about the book. I found it odd because she's the type of person who insists the whole family reads something she likes so she can go over it in minute detail without her having to deal with talking around spoilers. Given how much of a fan she was, I had expected to force myself through the book but she gave away her copy almost as soon as she finished it and brushed off our questions about it when we asked her how it was. I'm now starting to see why she was acting the way she did at the time.

    It's important that you finish this review as he is set to make his return to new media sometime this year or next year, Rachel a lot of people write off this early book as just bad but this is extremely revealing. The barrier of language in the hands of those who are capable can be a powerful tool, fortunately, we have someone who has a very level headed approach and is not afraid of a big youtuber.

    unpopular opinion, but I hate how people are policing fat people in how they themselves speak about being fat or how they joke about it. As a plus size person myself it grinds my gears when people call ME fat phobic for being honest about MY feelings on being fat. Shane Dawson has every right to joke about or be honest about his experience as fat.

      @@AZ-ij1ls yes exactly, but Rachel's reactions to Shane joking about his own appearance or size is the same reaction she has to him joking about other people's appearances in this book. It's not the same thing, he has every right to speak of himself and joke about himself as he wishes.

    As a person who actually is an empath (even saying that sentence makes me cringe), I cannot imagine saying or even thinking any of the things shane said about people in this book. It’s absolutely vile. People are born with empathy, it doesn’t just happen one day 10 years into your career when you’re thinking of an interesting spin for your docuseries. Everything he says in this book really proves he is not an empath.

    I was admittedly gutted when I heard about the grandmother because I lost my grandmother in high school. The last time I ever got to see her was in August of 2016. I cried when I had to leave to the airport because I was scared I would never get to see her again...she died November of the same year just a couple of days before Trump got elected. My mental health was deteriorating during the time leading up to her death and that didn't help at all. My actual "goodbye" to her was over the phone...she didn't even speak, which made it all the more harder. Part of me wonders if I should have taken time off from school to see her in person, yet I also don't think I could've handled seeing her in the condition she was in right before her death. It's almost been five years now, but I still get emotional whenever I think back to the last time I got to see her in person. I had no idea how right I was...too right.
    Shane is incredibly lucky to have gotten that closure.

    I really wish we had some insight as to what his home life was like growing up. Of course what he says in the book is wrong, but at the same time I can't help but feel a sense of sadness for him. It doesn't seem like he is coming from a place of malicious intent, but rather, he genuinely thinks this is normal. And unlike most predatory TH-camrs such as Onision for instance, Shane seems like he could be capable of genuine growth with the help of some therapy and education.

Of course there is much about him to be critical of, but overall, I do not think he is a bad person.
