- Finally installing the MHI 18K turbo that has been sitting in my garage. Originally intended to do this all in one shot, but the Evo decided otherwise!
Link to the Garrett website that has a good PDF for the turbo removal/install:

So I’m in the process of installing the MAP manifold. I too have an MHI18k turbo that i had installed a few years ago. I’m dreading the fact that I have to remove all the turbo bolts that were so difficult to re-install to lower the turbo so I can mount the MAP manifold over the turbine housing studs. Aaaah!
Looking forward to part 2 !
The evo x should have come stock OEM with the MHI. Would have been even more legendary!
That would have been nice!
Thanks, man! Good video
What finally broke that turbine housing support bolt loose for you? It's the only thing I've had trouble with now for 2 days. Can't get the damn turbo off.
A lot of patience and walking away a couple times to regain composure...... But for real there is essentially only one way to get at it from the bottom, and that is with a very short socket and universal on a long extension, or a combination of several wobble extensions. I definitely recommend using a six sided socket to lower the risk of rounding this bolt out. Also shoot some PB blaster or other lubricant in the backside of the threads to help breakdown any rust. I also bought a really really long 3/8 drive socket wrench (or breaker bar) so I can get good leverage and breaking torque. Its annoying because the amount of extensions you have to use will flex and reduce some of the torque you can apply by hand.
Not sure I would recommend any type of impact for this because these bolts have a tendency to snap or gall. Almost every bolt I broke was when I hammered on it with my dewalt impact. Exhaust bolts are not friendly.
Some anti-seize would probably also be good when you put this one back in as it is a PITA to remove as you can see
👍👍👍
Did you use a stud or maps provided bolt in the hard to reach part of the exhaust manifold to turbine housing? The lower left side of the turbine housing
How ru liking the manifold blanket?…I’m thinking of getting 1
That’s why I hate how the 4b11 sits
It’s so hard to do a turbo swap
Is your stock turbo still available?
How difficult was it to remove the studs in the engine on the left and right to install the MAP exhaust manifold?
Removing the studs from the head was actually much easier than any of the other studs that needed to be removed. You probably won’t have any major trouble with them.
My stock exhaust manifold is leaking and I can smell spent gasses in the cabin until I run the AC. Deciding whether to get a replacement OEM one or try again with the MAP one. I’ve tried it before and I couldn’t get a bolt to align Into the turbo manifold.
and you do need a tune after?
Yes you absolutely do. I didn’t show any of that though because my car is tuned by me, and that is not the type of info I would put on TH-cam. Definitely find a professional to do your tune if you do this turbo swap.
Were do I get that heat shield 🛡 looks good
thermal zero, manifold blanket, evo x specific, MAPerformance sells it but you have to use the search function to find it.
mpbiv421 thanks when’s part two coming
