    I am so proud of you!! So intelligent and well knowing your mission here on soc media. The amount of knowledge about DID and mental health care you’re sharing is incredible. We need you. The world needs you. Your patience and determination are beautiful. It took a lot of courage to step forward and speak loud for sure, but now you have a whole army of people having your back and passing clear informations about health care and fighting with stigma 💖

    "SPLIT" is to D.I.D like "Fifty Shades of Grey" is to B.D.S.M. basically all it does is make people wonder. It doesn't give any accurate information and can cause a lot of unhealthy misunderstandings and situations.

      Yes. And even if the movie is pretty close and realistic, they will never be exactly spot on. It’s a movie, they have to make it interesting. Like Chloe said in the DITL video, they don’t do much. The movie wouldn’t have been interesting if it just showed someone sleeping all day, but still Split was so inaccurate it’s low key painful.

    As an outsider Split was a great resource. I graduated in psychology, saw the movie and thought: "It can't possibly be a good portrayal of this disease" and educated myself on the subject (with videos from people suffering from this disease and scientific articles). Now I want to specialise in the treatment of DID and help people affected with dignity. All of this wouldn't have been possible without this movie because we NEVER talked about DID in the university although it's extremely prevalent.

      I don't know if Split really dehumanized people in my personal opinion because I cant really remember the movie in its entirety at the moment to refute otherwise, plus I would never tell others how they should feel about a situation specially a disorder in the first place. I would just tell how I see it from my perspective.
      I do remember Glass and I feel that M. Night Shyamalan in a way did make Kevin and the other characters feel more human. I actually didn't ever place the character in the movie though as anything to be compared to an actual human that is living with DID. I really feel it humanized the character Kevin though with showing he had good and evil in him and was capable of recognizing that as well and was able to choose the "good" side of himself once coming to terms with why his trauma that happened to him as a child. I perceived it more so on the super hero/villain concept of humanizing them, not comparing mental illness to a fictional character. It made me look at the concept of comics putting characters above humans when this movie made them to appear just as normal as anyone else, that they just have extraordinary physical attributes.
      I can see where it would bother people with the disorder though, cause very young people and uneducated people watching these movies tend to relate such things together when they don't have the knowledge or experience that is factual to base it off of. The person that commented was wrong in telling someone with the disorder how they should feel and that no one in the world without it was perceiving people with DID that way. That is just untrue, I come from the south of the US and you would be surprised just how ignorant people can be when they are uneducated. That is the problem of the world people act and feel on their own life experience and don't want to try to learn from others most of the time.

  • @MusiicRoolz
    @MusiicRoolz 5 ปีที่แล้ว +116

    how can that commenter say "its not factual" "no one takes it seriously" but then go on to say that its creating more awareness for DID and anyone who has it should be proud of having it because of the movie?? its either similar or not you cant have both

    The " its only a movie and its just for entertainment" can only be applied to things the general population has a very good understanding and ACCEPTANCE of. But things like DID that aren't widespread knowledge it can be a very dangerous thing. Whether we care to believe it or not Media shapes our opinions on the majority of things and how the media Portrays something IS significant, it matters! Unfortunately there are alot of people out there that get their information from certain things from movies and television and dont fully grasp the fact that not everything on T.V is accurate. People generally fear what they do not know and if someone who knows nothing about DID watches a movie like Split they then associate that with the real disorder and that fear from lack of information has grown into fear of what they THINK the disorder is and how the people who have it behave. I very much encourage everyone to do their own research with anything and do not just blindly take what the movies and television give you and swallow it down as if it is the only truth out there

    I once believed that "Split" was accurate or at least a good impression for DID and people with DID are/will be harmful at one point. Even after watching some of your videos, I still have the thought that maybe one of your alters are harmful and "why should there be a gate keeper like Jade? Maybe there is an alter that needs to be kept hidden because it's harmful" just because I believed that there are DID cases like the one in "Split". Bless your system for making this vid.

    • @GeeaRCee
      @GeeaRCee 5 ปีที่แล้ว +37

      I haven't seen Split and after this video, I still am not interested. If I ever will be watching I'd probably just watch it to criticize it and see where they got it wrong and where they could have at least improved on. From the reviews I have seen, they mentioned that in the movie Split, the person with DID was murdering other people.
      Here's what I want to say. There are systems wherein an alter or some of their alters would have different mental illnesses. Not all systems though, just some.I remember one system had an alter that harmed the body; the host and their system was unsure if the alter did it in purpose or accidentally.
      If anything, a person with DID is much more prone to self harming than harming others. So I feel like the world should be much more focused into preventing self harm on individuals with DID than be worried of them intentionally harming others.
      This stigma and wrong representation of DID should stop. These are people who are victims of trauma and are on their journey towards healing. Intentionally harming others is not their priority.

    • @TheSkycielito
      @TheSkycielito 5 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      There are alters that can harm the body, but that doesnt mean they are a threat to others. You dont see a person wo cuts themselfs and think oh no they are going to cut the others. If a murderer had DID, that doesnt mean that people with DID enter in the same bag because of one case.

It's a super hero series, so not relatable to the real world but I thought the DID was quite nice represented. At least I've never seen this before in any movie or series and got me started to think about this disorder more deeply. i agree that split creates a stigma for people living with DID, but I'd just like to point out that the only reason I found this channel was because it was recommended by TH-cam after I watched an interview with James McAvoy about the movie. while I enjoyed the movie, I knew that it was not an accurate portrayal of DID. this channel has taught me so much about DID and what it actually is. I hope you can understand that some people can truly sympathise with your struggle while still enjoying split (even though it does damage the reality of the condition). however, I totally agree that the creators handled the backlash poorly. like you said, it wouldn't have been hard to at least put a disclaimer at the end of the movie, they should have at the very least done that.

      I too liked the movie Split for a long time and didn't see it as that damaging, mainly because it made me want some alters to be stopped, but not the body to be killed because of alters I liked. And also because I symphatized with the therapist, since she was kinda sticking up for ppl with DID as far as I remember? I'm really sorry if I'm wrong, I'm sure she spread quite a lot of incorrect facts too. I know now that you should never make a serial killer in a movie, book or tv show have DID or schizophrenia or ASPD etc. I knew a few things about DID at the time as well and therefore didn't assume that any real person with DID is a murderer just because they have the disorder. But sadly, some just think of ppl with DID as dangerous because of it's portrayal and it's just disrespectful to ignore the communities thoughts on the movie. I really wanna help to erase the stigma surrounding DID.

    My Protector voiced this on twitter after witnessing this exact kind of disregard and disrespect for DID because of the movie Split while in a stream on Twitch.. When we brought up that as someone who has the condition, it is an unfair and totally biased view of something that cannot be controlled. I also mentioned none of my alters were anything like the ones featured in the movie, and was hit with the response "Well as long as none of them are serial killers, you're fine." And the Streamer completely swept it under the rug instead of saying something that might have helped the situation. Doing damage control because of the movie shouldn't be a thing, but unfortunately Hollywood seems to not care at all. It was very upsetting and caused us to feel a bit fragile being the odd ones out trying to clear the air over such things.

    It's so frustrating because if DID didn't exist and people didn't develop it, the idea of having multiple personalities in one person could and would actually be just a cool movie trope or superhero power. But it does, and people do, so it cannot be reduced to and invalidated and trivialised like that, and it certainly cannot be misrepresented by it. Media like movies is often the only exposure most people have to certain groups of people, so it is very wrong for people to say 'it's just a movie', as society has made it so much more than that.

      I would like to provide some context on that:
      That series is based on Marvel comics, and the character of Mary Walker comes from the comics (well, from Daredevil's, but that's not important). She's know in the comics as "Typhoid Mary", and she has DID in the comics as well, so potrating her with DID, as well as the exact potrayal of all of her personas (Mary Walker, known as Mary in the series, Typhoid Mary, known as Walker in the series, and Bloody Mary, who is the mysterious third alter in the series), was because they wanted to be faithfull to the comics.
      Besides, The Entropy System reviewed its potrayal of DID, and they gave it a thumbs up, basically.

      Alright, so I'll own up to the fact that I probably should have specified when I said "she" because I assumed the person in the comment was a female but l never meant any of that toward DID. The pronoun game has caused a misunderstanding here.
      I was stating that the person comparing it to cancer probably wouldnt have done it if cancer only ever got negative screen or media coverage because then she would understand how it feels to be treated as subhuman or as a violent monster the way most media, and definitely Split, treats DID.

    • @artemisameretsu6905
      @artemisameretsu6905 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @TheSportsGuru
      Alright so let me specify.
      The woman, DisociaDID says she so I'm gonna assume their gender here, the woman who said she has cancer said that people with DID shouldnt raise a fuss about Split because its "just a movie".
      She was using her disease, one that has no negative connotation associated with it to try to explain to someone else why it's the same as having *another* movie about how DID people are dangerous monsters capable at snapping at any moment.
      Movies about cancer dont make the person with cancer out to be the villian, they don't make cancer victims out to be monsters, or crazy, or dangerous.
      Media may not seem important, but if your only exposure to a medical condition is through the media and the media only ever shows it as a condition that makes someone demonstrably dangerous, that's horrific.
      People with DID have every right to be disgusted by the movie because the media takes a traumatic coping mechanism and turn it into a sick tv/movie trope where the person with DID is either always A, victimized further for it, or B, demonized for it.
      People go years, decades, even after knowing what's "wrong" with them hiding it as best they can because as far as the general public is aware, having DID makes you dangerous, makes you crazy, makes you an unsafe, untrustable person. And the media had and still has a heavy burden in leading the general public to that consensus regardless of if they meant to or should be held accountable for it or not.
      If you want to understand my original post, the "she" is the woman in the video who stated she had cancer and that DID people should get over it because *she* doesn't mind there being movies about cancer patients.

    • @artemisameretsu6905
      @artemisameretsu6905 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @TheSportsGuru
      Nah no worries, I figured that's what had happened.
      Personally I do feel it's the medias responsibility to at least put a bloody disclaimer.
      Unfortunately DID is uncommon enough that there is little to no reason to teach it unless a child exhibits the behavior of someone with DID. There just isn't the funding nor time.
      It would be great if we could all learn about all the awful medical malaise that exists in the world and how we shouldn't treat people like shit because of it but its impractical. Its illogical, we can't teach children literally everything before they turn into young adults capable of cruelty.
      As a society on whole, I'd rather hold responsible those who put out a narrative that any medical disorder makes you a dangerous, untreatable, untrustable person.
      At the very least I think they should be required to state the disease they are dramatizing, and how they are dramatizing it to ensure the public, that they are trying to get to suspend their disbelief, knows what's real and what's not before going further.

    A few years ago I watched a Korean drama called "Kill me, Heal me" and it's about a guy who has DID. I don't have DID myself and it's not my place to judge it but I actually don't think it's a bad representation of the disorder at all. Maybe check it out and let me know what you think? It's got 20 episodes though and it takes a few episodes to get into the story.
    It's basically about a guy who went through something very traumatic as a child and as a result split apart into 7 alters. None of the alters are evil (although one is kinda edgy and he's scared of integration so he kinda goes like "I'm gonna make the host disappear" but he's not evil he's just scared and doesn't do anything bad) and none of them murders anyone. The genre is not horror. Through the episodes you get to know the alters, one who is the host who tries to get his life together and tries to uncover is painful past, he's also got a child alter, a female alter, a suicidal alter, etc. He goes through therapy & all. I don't remember the end though.
    But in this drama DID wasn't depicted as something crazy, scary or creepy. It was shown as a mental illness caused by trauma, and how different alters can be. I personally also think the actor did a good job. Of course they added stuff here and there for a more dramatic effect but overall I'd say the drama is 150% better to watch about DID as something as gross as Split.
    Edit: I'm not saying it's 100% accurate and a perfect representation for DID but I thought I'd share it anyway, since it doesn't seem to be harmful to me. If it is then I'm sorry.

      what i think i gather is, that the movies, especially the horror slasher movies, the ones that i like, says that DID has bad or can have bad parts to it, and then they roll with that idea, expand it to it being killers people lurking inside, and can jump out at any time.
      what i think the difference is, is that in reality, is that the person wtih DID wuold not have that. they have protectors, and gatekeepers, but not killers. the rationale i got in my head for linking the reality as explained here, to the movies, is that the movies show a psychopath, someone already bad, presenting with DID.
      not that DID has bad parts, but that a bad person happens to have DID.

      Systems Supporting Systems, always. We've all been through so much and it's taken many of us a long time to find each other. I love them all like they're family.
      I see us as if we are standing together and holding hands, a front line against stigma and abuse to protect Systems who aren't as fortunate or able, and sharing our experiences and knowledge to educate the world.
      We stand so strongly together because a lot of us have never experienced that before. We are all united in wanting to make the world a better place with our voices and I'm so proud of my fellow DID TH-camrs. There's no selfishness in true advocacy. 💖

    The first exposure to DID for me was When Rabbit Howls, an EXTREMELY graphic but very eye opening novel about a person with DID and the trauma they faced which helped form it...when I watched Split, I was very confused, and read many things that when back and forth between it’s not real to people with DID are exactly like how it’s portrayed in Split.
    I’m so sorry that this film was made with no clarifications, and little understanding of how DID actually works. That just makes me very irritated for you. Stay strong, DissociaDID system. You’re so helpful!! I’m so glad I found you, so I can learn more!

    I got this exact comment when I was telling my best friend. She was so sweet about it and listened and asked polite questions, but the guy she liked overheard our conversation and said "Oh. so you're the beast from Split?" That.. yeah that sucked. But it was made no better because I have a dog alter and he then said "And you're a furry? How much weirder can you get?" Luckily my friend stood up for me and we strived to educate him.. didn't make it hurt any less though.

      I watched the first movie by this director who I loved, it was called "Unbreakable" it did not have this new character with "DID"...and I loved the first movie and the actors. Now after watching your channel, I refuse to watch Split or Glass. I actually didn't know about Split, Saw Glass at the store on DVD but now glad I did not buy it. Two of the main actors from "Unbreakable" are in it but also the character they portray as having DID. I won't watch it, I saw a trailer and he was made out to be evil or have an evil personality that kidnapped these girls. I don't know, just stupid! I knew that wasn't right. I watched a TV movie in the 80's I believe about a girl with MPD now DID "When Rabbits Howl" (I think) was the book it was based on. She was not violent at all. And the movie just made me ill and sick when I saw her abuse flashbacks which they said in the movie they could not put everything or how bad it really was or people would not been able to handle it. I am so mad at the director of Split. He has lost me as a fan of his movies which used to be so much fun. I believe he is the director. His movies always made me think or were scary in a fun way, but this is really a bad thing he has done to not even say "Hey this is not how the illness really is, just fiction for my scary movie. Some sort of disclaimer should have been put at the beginning I think and end. I am so sorry. I would like to see them do a film about someone with DID that is true and accurate and educates society like they did for people with Schizophrenia. "A Beautiful Mind" was so well done, true story. My late husband suffered all his life from Paranoid Schizophrenia. He was a gentle loving man who would have never hurt anyone except maybe himself. We couldn't talk about it in public unless we referred to it as "S" because my husband said people would look at him like he was "bug" and afraid of him. So horrible! And even with that film I think people still look at people with it as "crazy" or "dangerous"...on the news some guy shoots up a movie theater and is called Schizophrenic, show a picture of him with crazy look in his eyes, not all are violent, in fact I would say most are not though I have not looked it up. Sorry this was so long. Hang in there, I have learned so much from you.

      First, if you are just trolling, please stop. I am going on the premise that you aren't, giving you the benefit of the doubt.
      Critical-RAGE, imagine if you had a rare disease that could be easily seen by others. Let's say you have a large, red lump that moves around your face and neck. Sometimes, it goes unnoticed by you because its in a spot that doesn't hurt. Sometimes it causes blinding headaches. Even worse, when you try to lay down for sleep at night, the lump moves to just the wrong place keeping you from getting comfortable enough to sleep regularly. A few thousand people in the country have the same condition, and some treatments are starting to come forward. However, a film maker looking to make a quick buck sees you on the internet, googles the issue, then writes a screenplay about it.
      This movie has healthy people getting injured by a man with the Red Lump. It has an ooze that infects other people, sometimes killing them. The main character would NEVER harm anyone, but sometimes, due to lack of sleep, he wanders the night, poisoning people as he goes.
      Now you, in real life, become even more ostracized and self conscious then ever. Some of the funding dries up. You and those who share your disease find it harder then ever to get help.
      THIS is why it is the movie's fault. D.I.D. is still new to the world at large as a serious condition. It already has connotations attached to it by the public at large. How many people researched Quantum Theory and the Quantum Real before seeing Ant-Man and the Wasp? Same here... people go see movies and simply accept what their eyes show them. All it would have taken is a small effort on their pert to mitigate some of the damage.
      Actually, that applies to us all. If every person makes just a small effort, great change and love would arise.
