LS3. I have one in my 90, but with a manual 6 speed. It’s like it was made for it, a perfect match. Smooth, quiet, very reliable and the power is intoxicating. Not to mention if you build it well the resale value could be huge. If you want to enjoy it daily, don’t get hung up on originality. You put modern heating and insulation into old buildings and it doesn’t ruin them, it keeps them useful and relevant. So I’d say keep the outside and interior original but refreshed, then update the mechanics to the modern day so it’s a truly useable (and enjoyable) classic.

The GM LS series V8 is the easy button for a lot of projects where a repower is desired. Andrew would be well served to explore that option, as far as I know the LS series V8’s are common enough in Australia to make this a viable option. Here in the States of he LS swap is very common. Hard to argue with 400+ hp, and 400+ lb-ft that is reliable, compact, and inexpensive.

Modernise the drive train and mechanicals. Leave everything else as it is because that tells it’s story. It’s a beautiful original vehicle and should be preserved as it is. Preserve the exterior don’t repaint it. Preserve as much of the interior as possible. Just make it the type of vehicle that you want to take cruising just for the sake of driving it.

Maybe consider a softer resto-mod where you keep the interior as original as possible alongside the mechanical upgrades. Done sympathetically you would still have the nostalgic feel of the cockpit, but with the additional comforts. Kind of like the VW campers with Subaru/Porsche conversions.

  • @gordonbates9099
    @gordonbates9099 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Make it mechanically as good as new and make it safe. Keep to original or you'll lose the very reason you have bought it for. This car and these videos so far as I see, are about recapturing something. You've rebought the car of your youth to retrieve something that's lost in modern vehicles, modern travel and modern life! Keep the big Toyota for your modern life and the big journeys. Keep the Rangie as it is, for weekends when you want to time travel back to the 1970s.😆 All the best with it. Cheers!

  • @007Knightjp
    @007Knightjp 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Seeing how clean the vehicle is, I'm not too sure that resto-mod is the way to go. It would be great to preserve as much originality of the vehicle as much as possible. For me, Resto-modding a nvehicle makes sense if much of the vehicle's mechanicals and bodywork need replacing and "while your down there" can improve on and make better.
This vehicle is pretty much a great museum piece. I imagine, 50 years down the line visiting some off road museum and seeing it displayed as "Andrew's Range Rover" in the same way that Roothy's Milo is displayed right now.
However you do plan to use the vehicle, as a daily driver, etc., and after driving so many modern Toyotas, you tend to have different expectations of what a daily should be now. On the other hand, you bought it for the nostalgia of your old Range Rover. So the seat comfort, etc., should remind you of it. Would, for example, changing the seats give you the same nostalgic feeling? Would it remind you of your old Range Rover?
Writing this, I've just worked it out in my head.. You have already some uprated headlights, shocks, etc. These are definitely not stock parts.. they ARE upgrades and to get it registered, you will have to get be in compliance with some modern criteria. There's no way going around it, if you want it road legal.
In my mind, a question just popped up.. "What if Andrew had never sold his original Range Rover and kept it all these years?.. What would it look like?.. And What would he have done to it?"..
And I think that is what you should do to this vehicle. The premise of owning this current Range Rover is to get back the vehicle you lost / sold.. So What would it look like today had you not sold it?... Regardless of what myself or anyone thinks, that's the vision that you have to follow; simply because it ties the two vehicles together into the story of Andrew St. Pierre White.

Siri chimes in with impeccable timing. Apparently Chevrolet has crate electric options that adheres to their normal V8 crate motor packaging criteria. As a long distance overlander it makes no sense, but as a daily it might ? The older chassis with simple electronics make for great electro swaps. I have less than half of your experience in the 4X4 touring life. However as I share the same passion thought I would put my view on this project if I am lucky enough to acquire one.
    1) Strip down to bare metal and sand/dry ice blast all the rust, repair with stainless sheet on the body where possible. Followed by a good rust spray or raptor liner on all vulnerable areas.
    2) Upgrade to a reliable 5 speed manual or 6 speed auto transmission, retain the same V8 & replace the carb to modern day fuel injection with electronic controls for better fuel efficiency, torque, power and better emission.
    3) Add front and rear diff locks if possible.
    4) Rebuild suspension to stock, add adjustable shocks.
    5) Retain the interior, exterior and under hood as close to stock as possible with needed creature comforts and conveniences.
And the vehicle I believe, will be good for another decade or two.

Upgrade engine, gearbox, air-conditioning and suspension to newer models of range rover. That way you will enjoy your favorite car and it will be reliable as well. I hope you read this, fingers crossed. Cheers

So here's a thought, what about a super charger? It'll have the immediate throttle response like an N/A engine, no lag, and with the addition of an engine computer, should be able to be tuned to be reliable and make plenty of power. Trickier? most definitely, but it keeps it more original. Also, I see no reason you'd have to change the interior that much on a resto-mod. Change it too much, and it won't "be the same" when you get in it. And lastly, I'm glad you intend to keep it long term, I can tell you really love this vehicle.

My feeling is that given the sentimental attachment you have for these vehicles, you may find it difficult to restomod it. Plus it looks like so far it isn't too far gone. It seems to me like a good candidate for an original authentic historical early 70s classic range rover build, something which is now very rare and the value of vehicles like this is primarily based on period correct originality and attention to detail.

The only problem with the restomod idea is you will remove much of the vehicle’s personality, which is why you bought it in the first place.
In the U.S. it was common to put Chevrolet engines in older Jaguars. It ruined the car’s personality. They might as well just restore an Impala. A couple of us in the local Jag club threatened to build a 69 Camero with a 3.8 XK engine. But in the end, decided it would be a waste of a perfectly good engine. Lol

I think the great USP behind Land Rover/ Range Rover vehicles is that you can make them suit your purpose. Make it your own. If I've learnt anything in my involvement with such vehicles, make it work as it should before you do anything. It's so easy to get carried away with the wheels and tyres, lights, etc.. Any 45 year old vehicle isn't all that pleasant to drive, until it's had a certain amount of TLC. Then you can decide where you want to go with it.

    Hello Andrew,
I think modernisation is great, but don’t change the fantastic LT95 to an automatic box. What ist the problem with it? In most cases the shifting is hard to do, there for change the oil to a 10w40 STOU. It is an engine oil with gearbox oil additives. It’s much smoother to shift, also in cold conditions.
When the box is noisy, the lay shaft bearings have given up, a common problem when gearbox oil was filled in by the past owners. The repair is an easy job and doesn’t cost a lot.
Another idea..., take the longest street gear 1.00 for the transfer box and a4.6l V8. You can install the engine without modifications. Take the old dizzy front cover, the exhaust and inlet manifolds and carbs. You can’t see any difference to the old engine bay after the swap.
There are a few small mods needed:
Camshaft with dizzy gear, and a distance ring on the crankshaft. The oil sump needs a few hits with a hammer to get clearance for the longer conrods.
I have this set up in may 75 Range Rover and I must say it’s amazingly to drive with. The fuel consumption got five litres less to the 3.5 and 1.176 transfer gear.
With an automatic gearbox the vehicle gets more boring and tired.
    Regards, Udo

I have an 84 and a 86 classic . The 84 im the second owner and had it 21 years . My 86 i have re done the whole thing . Its got a Holden 5.0 efi v8 with a t400 trans . My 84 is still pretty stock lt95 box and 3.5 with a 350 holley and extractors . I like both they go anywhere and dont get stuck . My 84 is goldrush gold and my 86 is silver . They are a money pit but still are one of the best 4wds in the world . Not the new junk the old ones .

You've bought youself a cracking good original RRC,Sir!!!
I hardly see them that good at our shop anymore,it's very rare.
Also you went to the right place to get it serviced and fixed.Lovely blokes who know what their doing.
As for your dilemma about how to proceed, that's a tough and personal one.
First the original car has a certain value money wise and here in Europe your car will be very expensive as is atm.
All non standard mods will affect the prize and most not in a good way,but there is a way to give you the perfect daily driver and still having it all LR and possible to get it back to original in the future.
Have it retro fitted with the later Disco 1 3.9 V8 with serpitine belt already fitted with the a\c pump, transfer the complete 3,9 EFI system into your RRC and the autobox with LT 230 transfer box.
It would transform your car like you wouldn't belive.
The complete car/axles can handle the extra power without problems and you all used standard LR parts that can be sourced anywere without special made items at extra cost.
I fitted this exact same setup a couple of times now and it's well worth the work.
Just buy a complete donor vehicle and drive it a bit to see if all works well before getting it done.
Just now there is a 2 door RRC 3.5 V8 carb. and 5 speed in our shop that i converted to Hotwire 3.9 EFI and a 4 speed auto box with LT230 from a later Voque SE.
Such a nice and relaxed car to drive now and much more user friendly.
Good luck with your beautifull car.

resto mod is the way to go, it just makes the car that bit better over standard, or what the engineer's back then would have done if they had access to the modern equipment we have now.

hi andrew, with all respect - hold a second, have a coffee (maybe not an instant one), and keep focus a second.
not only hits on your channel are a mayor point of your activitys but also and i think its also very important - sympathy!
so what gives you more stories (also in the future) - more sympathy?
    - ripping apart a 45year old car and put whatever conversion to it? or
    - bringing this car back to life, as it was ? overhauling the engine, some adds like aircon etc.-done
speaking for myself i hardly understand why people want an old vehicle but want this cars with 21st century perfomance- powerful engines, smooth automatic gearboxes, comfort? they throw thousands and thousands of cash in the project, but it isnt and will never be a 21st century car and its originaly is completly lost. its a frankenstein.
there are thousands of this restmods-projects around, but the main attention, the smiles, are always winning the old ladys with their quicks and quaks and moody souls. especialy how you started the story with your footages from the old days- people like this

I have the feeling that you don't really feel exited about this project, if I am right there wouldn't be anything wrong with it. Sometimes we fall in love with the idea of doing something but then when we actually get to do it we realise that maybe that project really didn't need to be done.

Hey Andrew, You should not have a problem to source upper dash they were same for all the years. I personally own automatic 3.9 and I agree that this particular drive train suits the vehicle very well. But there is something about that bootleg shifter :-). I would propose tasteful upgrade instead of restomod. Upgrade transmission to LT77 5-speed, rebuild engine with hi-torque cam and upgrade it to modern ignition and fuel injection - It will make 125kW easy. And you got stylish daily usable classic with all the character retained. As a bonus you can keep carbs in a box to make purists happy.

With today’s sensor-centric cars and engines, I long for my naturally aspirated, electronics free trucks. If I had my way, I’d want my 1972 4x4 International Travelall back in my garage. All 8,000 pounds of her. A 390 CI V-8, 50 gallons of fuel, all steel dashboard, Warn winch, and 12” wide BFGs, she’d never, ever get stuck. When it would break down in Baja California, I could fix it with what I had in my tool box.

Restomod for the win. Don't go overboard with an "LS Swap" though. Stick to this engine pedigree and find an EFI 4.0, 4.2/4.3 or 4.6 Rover engine from the newer models. And if at all possible keep the original parts. Come to think of it, the 5.0 version from some TVR models would be the ultimate incarnation of this engine.
