i read somewhere that taylor used the numerical "1" rather than "one" for the 1 because the person the song is about is not "the one"
i just love when she puts in all these cheeky details
i also kind of interpreted this as her alluding to the idea that although the person wasn't "the one", they were a first love (#1 lol), which explains why the narrator holds onto and often reflects on the relationship!
This was so much fun. Surprised, though, that you didn't connect "roaring twenties" with that decade of her life between her teens and turning 30 when she truly roared as a performer.
"If you want Everlore you gotta Folkmore" should be on a shirt.
Betty makes me hate James mostly because of how he tries to worm out of responsibility and the total disregard for Augustine.
'I saw you dance with him' to try and shift blame onto Betty.
'She pulled up like a figment of my worst intentions' to blame Augustine. It's like he's saying what he thinks Betty want to hear without having done any real reflection. I also love how in August she references this with
'Remember when I pulled up and said "get in the car" and then cancelled my plans just in case you called'.
In August she sings about true love but in Betty he says 'slept next to her but I dreamt of you all summer long'.
'Would you trust me if I told you it was just a summer fling'
'So much for summer love'

Epiphany is a piece of art by a songwriting genius operating at the peak of her power. It’s painfully stark in its raw beauty. Not an easy song to listen to but one that deserves to be listened to and be more appreciated than it is.

My Tears Ricochet was a perfect description of the feeling I felt when just recently someone I trusted so much ended up being my "murderer" and through all my stages of grief of seeing our relationship die. And it really does feel like I'm stuck in my own funeral without having the liberty of being to "rest in peace." I can't help but feel 'OMG yes' when you described the song's meaning.
I honestly believe Folklore is Taylor Swift's best work to date. I just can't see it getting any better. it's absolute perfection and like you it took me a good year or two to embrace it and when I did, it changed my life.

What I really love and think is the "cobblestones " metaphor:
cardigan: High heels on cobblestones
-> cobblestones are the relationship, high heels might break, she might break in this relationship, it's hard to walk, it's hard to work out but James is still the one to catch her when she falls (for him) etc
betty: I was walking home on broken cobblestones
-> right before Augustine pulls up, foreshadowing of the relationship, how it's gonna breK5
I was a casual fan from her debut, listened to the singles but not much else. Reputation got my attention, but Lover is what made me a Swiftie. Folklore feels so different but still so Taylor. My partner, who has stated many times they are tired of listen to nothing but Swift, heard me playing this album and asked me who is was because they were really enjoying it. Folklore is the Taylor Swift album for people who don't like Taylor Swift.

I think this is my favourite Taylor Swift video essay. I very much enjoyed your takes on all the tracks and how you perfectly managed to put everything into words. And damn, you made me so emotional with some of these explanations, almost as much as the album itself!

for me, i particularly resonate with mirrorball because for me, as an artist, the part of me that i put out there, reflective, bright, talented is tired. like its accurare but it doesnt give the full picture because i feel as if people are only there for that sparkly side.

ok, I absolutely adore this video essay so far, but I think my absolute favorite thing is that you can tell approximately *when* in the pandemic you did the voiceovers and such. it's such a small thing, but I liked hearing you talk about the vaccine as if it were this shiny, new thing and being able to say "oh, so that's about when this part was made."
again, great job so far. I super love how in *theory* I've heard a good portion of this before, but the way you phrase it just makes it totally unique, in a way I don't think anyone's really said before. 💗💗

exile was so personal to me. I first heard it not too long after I finally left my ex, who abused me for over 3 years. one of the problems we always had was that I was constantly never heard. when talking about how I felt or our relationship, it was always cut short or manipulated into me feeling like a bad person. whenever I cried it was manipulation, whenever I told him problems I had with him it was me being over dramatic, etc. and once I eventually stopped bringing shit up, that was a problem too. so when I heard taylors part in exile, I was like "holy shit that's me". I gave so many signs, I left, he never heard me out. this was a time I didn't really listen to taylor, so exile was amongst like 3 songs from folklore I knew, but when I finally heard the rest of the album, my tears ricochet and mad woman also were very personal. but exile still captures exactly how I felt in my relationship, even if the song implies taylor didn't actually outwardly speak on her issues. sorry for the ramble I just really love this album and it's very close to my heart

Okay first of all, I'm so glad I found this video in my suggestions! I love your narration. I'm still on TLGAD part of the video but couldn't stop myself from commenting that earlier I too thought it was Rebakah's husband being referred to as new money, and I was confused with the contradiction since he's also supposed to be from an oil money wealthy dynasty. But then a friend pointed out that the one with new money in the lyric "there's only too far new money goes" is actually Rebakah
Not sure why YT waited 3 weeks to show this to me, maybe they thought I wouldn’t still be interested in another video essay/reaction to folklore a year and a half later 🤷♀️ as a writer (poems/aspiring songwriter) I am very much intrigued in lyrical analysis such as this. Especially, to this album. I’m just at the 13:38 mark and wanted to comment before the first song started. Looking forward to this!

I love this album more than any I have ever heard! And up until "folklore", I didn't even think I liked Taylor Swift. Then I found out she's a genius!! Favorite ever!!
Fearless is her best album until I heard Speak Now and then she topped with RED.
RED is her best song for a long time until Folklore & Evermore released.
Speak Now is probably still my fav.
Folklore, Red & Evermore are all joint 2nd for me haha

Invisible string is a great song and I love it. It's so nice. But Lakes is superior.
i used to not even be able to listen to mirrorball because something about the production of the studio version doesn't work for me, even though the lyrics were always gorgeous, but the long pond version of it completely changed the song for me! the honesty of the guitars and the clarity of taylor's vocals? woof. i have yet to not tear up at how she sings "i've never been a natural; all i do is try, try, try." similarly, august was a like until i heard lpss, which turned it into a love for me. so grateful we got that live version of the album (and trying not to cry about evermore not getting the same treatment lolll)
also, on the note of august: so interesting to me that you characterize it as an angry song! i've always heard it as wistful and resigned, more like the 1 in tone than illicit affairs. it sounds like augustine is speaking from well in the future after that summer has passed, so the hurt isn't as potent, but the indelible collage of summer memories linger. (the fact that my partner's name is august may very well also have something to do with this)
