One of the things that makes Taylor Swift’s songs so addictive is that they exist in a larger musical universe. We’re pretty used to this in film and TV, as numerous interconnected story worlds have chased the explosive popularity of the MCU. But few artists have applied the cinematic-universe approach so extensively to music. Through her combined discography, The Taylor Swift Cinematic Universe tells a unified narrative of a woman navigating her place in the world, maturing from brash, naive youth to confident, self-assured feminist full of mature, reflective wisdom. Here’s our deep dive into the motifs and takeaways of the expansive TCU.

One aspect that I enjoy the most about Taylor's songwriting is the constant reference to certain metaphors ; colors representing emotions ,High school archetypes , the car , then the whimsical ,storybook childhood references; "snow white", "Peter losing Wendy"", "white horse"", ""fighting dragons with you ""etc. It makes each album different but familiar because she has developed trademarks.

In her youth the high school setting was more literal like in you belong with me but in her 30s it's more of a metaphorical setting for new topics like politics in Miss Americana and the heartbreak Prince and that's how her music becomes a universe ,when you can still hear echoes of her past songs in new ones ,it feels as if its one continuous story or series making it both familiar but new .I also don't think a writer who writes and co-writes their own songs would change their style as much. I think Taylor has reached that level of popularity and fame where she is not actively looking for new fans but has a wide enough following that she can produce the kind of music she knows her fans still like and can build on the past which also feels familiar to a fan.

“Everybody wants you” and “I’m highly suspicious that everyone who sees you wants you” from Lover
Taylor has used “gold” to describe her relationship with Joe in many songs including End Game and Daylight
“Deep blue but you painted me golden” (Dancing with our hands tied)
“It's like your eyes are liquor, it's like your body is gold” (End game)
“Made your mark on me, a golden tattoo” (Dress)

    1. I knew you were trouble is not about Harry styles. It is about John Mayer or jake Gyllenhaal.
    2. The bad boy in Taylor's story is not Harry styles but John Mayer. She herself talked about it in songs like dear John or I knew you were trouble. Infact she never refered to Harry styles as a bad boy. Every song about Harry is about how the media ruined their relationship.
    3. We don't know when Taylor and Harry broke up. Just because the media said it was ain early 2013 doesn't prove anything. The media also said that her and jo Alwyn are not gonna last and they have been together for 5 years.
    4. Gold rush isn't about Harry styles. None of the songs on folklore and evermore are about her exes. She wrote fictional songs there.
What is everyone's obsession with making every song Taylor has written about Harry styles? She has only written 4 songs about Harry on the 1989 album, style, out of the woods, I know places and Wonderland.
5.all the theories you gave for songs on folklore and evermore were false. None of the songs are about Taylor's relationship with her high profile exes like Harry, jake etc. Dorothea is from a fictional boy's perspective whose soulmate left his small town and became a famous acctress. He is talking about how he only sees her on a small screen now. This the damn season is from that acctress's pov when she comes back home for Christmas and has a fling with the guy reminiscing about past but ultimately leaving him and going back to LA.
Happiness is from her best friend Abigail's pov after she ends up divorcing her husband.
Jeez. Closure is not about Kim kardashian. It is about her previous record label owner Scott borchetta. He sent Taylor a letter asking for closure. She is writing in the song that she is fine with her spite and she doesn't want closure from him.

She's also said that she really relates to this is me trying, so even though she created characters for it it's very much from experience. You literally said that closure was about Scott Borchetta, which makes it about an element of her personal life. Long story short is also very obviously about her. If Taylor was actually a movie franchise, I feel like that would be the credit song.

@@nurpeachmusic ooh I should have specified. I meant none of the songs were solely about her personal life as in her relationships with ex boyfriends. I think she is always gonna take inspiration from her life to write songs. But lover was the end of the era in which she only talked about herself or her high profile exes. I also kinda think that in the bridge of Coney Island she sort of gave a farewell to all of her exes and moving on there might be slim to none mentions in her newer albums. I will edit the comment tk add that.👍

I agree with everything the video says, except in the "Taylor's Lovers" section where the video attempts to guess the ex-boyfriends that served as inspiration. Mainly because it's pure speculation. Taylor has never named the people behind those songs out of respect. And they even speculated wrongly at times. Like, I don't know who "I knew you were trouble" is about, nor do I care (it's a good song), but as far as I know Harry Styles wasn't even dating her at the time the song was released.
Also, correlating her art to the guys she's dated (even though they have most likely inspired her) does her songwriting a disservice. She always managed to encapsulate in her songwriting feelings that are difficult to articulate in a poetic medium, regardless of her experience (like illicit affairs, for example, a song she's said was hard to make because she didn't know what is was like to cheat on a partner, even though she wanted to empathize with the character of the song). In "the man" she complains, very rightly so, that people always used to pay attention to her for her relationships instead of her capacity to write. She literally demands to given the priviledge of death of the author. Being able to write about whatever (like a double murder mystery about female rage in "no body no crime") without having people speculate about your personal life is a priviledge rarely given to women, and I don't think The Take should've done the analysis of the TCA so heavily reliant on her personal life.
Her songs are really good pieces of both music and writing. "Champagne problmes" and "Exile", both co-written by her now boyfriend, are a tragic breakup songs that counter the line of thought that she always writes about her ex-boyfriends or lovers. Doing an attempt of correlating her music with her life is rendered useless, in my opinion. Can't we just agree that she is a good writer and start analyzing her work for what it is? Whether experience had something to do with it or not is none of our businesses.

The only time she dropped a name in song is in dear john, & I'm with her because he was a 32 yr old dating a barely legal teenager(then he also wrote about her). Not to forget that "Dear John letters" are an actual thing(Google it). Plus she wrote "Back to December" as an apology to Taylor Lautner. She has the highest selling ENTIRELY self-written album in the modern era. She really didn't deserve the shit she got. Being framed & only having the full phone call come out in 2020. 1989 is not about Harry Styles... Style, OOTW and AYHTDWS maybe are about him, but the concept about that album was living the 20's life in a big fashion city with romance, friends, euphoric moments, paparazzi, parties, polaroids, enemies (Bad Blood)... it's about being in love in NYC and being stunnished about NYC, being heartbroken and ultimately being single and free (the best people in life are free)... Also Lover is one of her most important narratives, is about the closure of the 1989's diva who turns into a Reputation's villainess... it's just about who she really is on terms of the complex meaning of love... yes there's a lot of songs about Joe but there's songs about how she accepts and love herself as she is (Me!, The Archer, The Man), how she loves her friends and society in general, even her country (Miss Americana, YNTCD) and one of the most important songs is about how she deeply loves her mother (SYGB), it's a clear statement of who she is on her late 20's and actually is her most honest album ever... that album completes the trilogy of her pop era and put out a perfect spot of her next Indie Folk era with folklore and evermore and her exploration of the escapism narrative where she is not the protagonist, she's just the storyteller, in that case Gold Rush isn't about her and isn't about Harry Styles at all, the only songs on folklore about her are The Lakes and Peace, both related with Joe, and in evermore we have Willow, also related to Joe and RWYLM and ITTG, rescuing de "Tayla" character (I'm agree with you with the drama narrative)...

Not just one correction, there are more wrong facts
      1. Gold rush is definitely not About Harry Styles, its written from a fictional character's perspective about having a crush but not being able to confess to the person. Some of its lyrics are inspired by Joe Alwyn which you kind of acknowledged afterwards.
      2. Happiness is about her childhood bestfriend's divorce. It's written from Abigail's (her friend) perspective.
      3. Closure is about Scott Borshetta, her old label owner who refused to sell her the masters of her 1st 6 albums. It's definitely not shading Kim in any way,
Taylor is over that whole kimye drama and usually doesn't bring it up anywhere now.
There were a few more wrong facts which I am overlooking, but the aforementioned 3 are important to bring into light. Please do read my comment and If you respect Taylor in general or at least as an artist, please acknowledge this.

    • @nurpeachmusic
      @nurpeachmusic 3 ปีที่แล้ว

Masterpieces. Sister albums in my opinion, like folklore and evermore. They're totally the inverse of each other and they make an even stronger statement to the world than they would on their own. I feel like both are kind of underrated- Lover gets way too much hate in the fandom because somehow some people who call themselves Swifties can't see past the lead singles (which weren't even that bad- if the whole album was like that it might have been a bit much, but there really isn't anything wrong with a couple of lighthearted pop songs). Reputation is overpraised in the fandom but gets completely misunderstood outside of it. All her albums are amazing though, and if you haven't listened to her entire discography yet, you need to.

Finally, Great video! Taylor is really such an interesting public figure that you could have done a whole series on her.
Surprised you didn’t going into more detail about her feuds and how that has affected her public perception including her decision to remove her music from streaming services and re record her masters. Whilst this undoubtedly benefits her financially it also helps support other artists as well as pushing for artists to have the right to own their own work, her decision to leave streaming services also shows just how much power celebrities hold in the social media age.
Another thing that is interesting is how
self aware she is, something she referenced in blank space. Another example being the real unedited Kanye video she says she is so close to having her bubble burst and the public turning against her and little did she know that would happen.

Yes, I don't understand how they just overlooked the whole story behind reputation and her whole reclamation of her narrative after being cancelled.
