    I love to build massive massive enclosures so animals can roam free. I love seeing them walking trough mountains and rivers, caves, hills, woods. I know it's way more space than the game says they need, but I think it matches better how they live in nature. So far I haven't had financial troubles and I've done this in franchise mode and campaign!

    • @PawsBuild
      @PawsBuild  2 ปีที่แล้ว +134

      I do too it’s definitely possible to do (and I do the same because I want them to have as much space as possible!) - can just be a financial problem for beginners that I experienced in my first couple of zoos 😊

      I do too! I always like trying to mimic their natural habit the best I can with nice big habitats. I've seen some spectacular indoor habitat builds but something inside me needs the animals to be able to feel the sun on their backs. ❤️

      Same, I always make them hugeee lol I never have trouble making money in franchise mode so I don’t really think about the taxes or anything. I’m still learning to make the habitats look really good tho. I’ve been practicing the more realistic habitats like you’re describing but it’s so hard to make everything look right or function right lol

  • @nidohime6233

    Huge habitat can be a win-win as long you plan to add many animals in the same enclosure.
    Having zebras, giraffes, wilderbeasts and ostriches sharing the same space looks way more atractive than just having polar bears.

  • @megakaren2160

    For #10, you need to find a balance. You don't want the super expensive animals, but you don't want to be starting out with warthogs or peafowl either. You need something with high enough appeal to bring in decent donations. Some of my go-to starter animals are red pandas, saltwater crocodiles, and timber wolves.

    • @PawsBuild

      For my franchise zoo I started with red kangaroos. Pretty cheap and bring in enough guests to save up some money. My next animal was a cougar; more expensive but gets a lot of donations and of course rakes in them guests

  • @kae5717
    @kae5717 2 ปีที่แล้ว +42

    #10 is such an important tip... On some of the story challenges, I actually ended up running a zoo solely on the little exhibit animals (bugs, snakes, etc) for a good long while, earning extra money and conservation points by selling offspring to fund my savings for big animal exhibits. Get something cheap and easy to tend like tortoises if you need an enclosure, they don't need much space so that'll leave plenty room to expand later. But those bugs can and will support you for ages.

    • @francez123456789
      @francez123456789 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Taranchulas single handedly dragged my anarctic zoo out of the red. They are cheap, breed fast, and live a while. Sure, the arctic foxes, reindeer, and african wild dogs are popular, but even with donations, the spooders were earning me more. Also, I'm not sure if it's clear, but those terarium animals can earn donations if you stick a donation box in front of them.

    I actually like to start my zoo out with grizzly bears because even though their food is expensive they draw a MASSIVE amount of guests who will all pay an entry fee and food, drink and souvenirs and that will not only pay for the bear food but also continue to pay for much more than that. I started my franchise zoo with grizzlies and am now sitting at 350k and I've been playing that zoo for 3 days. So I disagree with your last point, animals like grizzlies are a high risk high reward investment.

    • @PawsBuild
      @PawsBuild  2 ปีที่แล้ว +31

      This is also very true, however like you said it’s a high risk-reward investment so for new players it may not be the best idea - a less risky strategy is probably better 😊

    • @EvanBear
      @EvanBear 2 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      @@PawsBuild Indeed, definitely not something I would recommend for a new player! They are also not very good if you need CC for franchise mode as they only have 1-2 babies at a time. Thankfully Frontier seems to put enough animals on the market these days where farming red pandas is not really necessary, I remember when there were no Frontier animals at all unless you spammed refresh, hit adopt and pray hard that you didn't suffer from the terrible trading lag going on back then heh.

And annoyingly that was all you ever see in the market, and one's people sell are those with mutations and very low prices.

    A lot of zoos tend to have clusters of habitats, often with little to no space between them...and modern ones tend to incorporate a lot of sight line setups so that the exhibits blend together and make the entire thing look much larger which is something that is a really good starting point for things.
    For some examples of this is to start with Disney's Animal Kingdom, a lot of their exhibits are formed by a mastery of the way you look at it to make it look like each extends and blurs with the next, using terrain features to hide barriers. Unfortunately, you can't use all of the tricks they have for controlling the animals though.
    While it's not a Zoo, the Shedd's Aquarium in Chicago has another great use of this in their Oceanarium. When looking at their larger tanks, they're specifically set up and positioned that the water of the dolphin and beluga tanks blend with the lake water you see through the window behind it that makes it look far larger than it actually is.
    You also have the Cincinnati Zoo's Africa, from most viewing angles you can see their various areas that lead up to each other such as their general savannah where you can also see the lions where their exhibit is side by side with it and positioned to look like a natural part of the wilderness, but the animals can't directly interact there but can smell and hear each other,

    • @MixR700
      @MixR700 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Shedd does this with the green anaconda (he's gotten so big) exhibit too, it looks like he has full access to this massive enclosure full of fishes and birds, but there is a very sheer mesh that divides him from the birds/ bigger fish. Likely so he doesn't eat them, but it also still can look like a real environment

      Hagenbecks Tierpark in Hamburg was one of the first zoos to do this, in the process creating its iconic Africa view, check it out if you want to, it's quite pretty, though maybe a bit outdated by today's standard

    So I just bought the whole pack in the steam sale and have played almost nonstop since 🤣 I only play sandbox so far because it frees you of financial worries, but I do most of these mistakes! The only ones I haven't are water exhibits and self made buildings as I just use the ready made stuff. My biggest mistake is definitely having too big an enclosure. I usually start out with one of the tortoises for a lot of the reasons most people suggest. Additionally though, I keep the tortoises and I let them have little baby tortoises for one cycle before I turn off breeding. Baby Tortoises are babies for like 20 years and the guest love to look at the baby animals. By the time they age I’m already well into my zoo

    I would like to add that having a large habitat will require that Zookeepers spend whole lots of time in there. If been under financial pressure, Zookeepers will be inefficient, lots of poop will be spread around, they will have to walk larger distances to place food which will tire them down more swiftly.

    I am super guilty of making my habitats waaaaay too big 😅 I have gotten in the habit of checking the size of the habitat once I have the walls and gate placed, but I’ll almost always end up like 20x bigger than the requirement and need to redo the barriers 😅😭

    I am by far not an expert at this game, but I noticed Raccoons (why are they in a zoo?) are very easy, cheap, and can have quite a few in a habitat. Their food was cheap and their research gave them both enrichments on the first one. Only problem is you need 10 meter fences 😅

    • @PawsBuild
      @PawsBuild  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Haha I think they’re from the Halloween pack so I guess raccoons are scary?😉 🎃👻 They added a few nocturnal animals to the game in the dlc so that’s actually why they’re there 😊 Haha wow I didn’t realise it was 10m! 😂

    Wow youre a nice zoo owner. What i do is use the rides for the people to be able to access where the animals are, then i jack up the prices to 20 bucks a ticket. My fave zoo theres a big mountain and i jave bottom mountain just a train station, some small animals, bathrooms and shops, then they go to the mid mountain thats where they can see cooler animals, more shops, then i ha we a gondola to the top of the mountain that i capped with snow. There's colder weather animals up there like bears and penguins and a heated cave with more shops

    Thanks for advice, I didn't even realize those viewing platforms were a thing. How do you keep the snow leopard from escaping its habitat? I tried putting electric fences but it still escapes

    • @PawsBuild
      @PawsBuild  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You have to check the barrier strength and height against the requirements of the snow leopard in the zoopedia and then also make sure it can’t climb something high and jump out over the barrier 😊

    For what it's worth this has been the first time playing a franchise mode I haven't gotten super low and am hovering around 100k in my zoo.
    I started with utilizing the free power and putting the only necessary zoo buildings behind the entrance.
    My first three animals were grizzly bear, aardvarks (ugh) and timber wolf and a bit later hairy scorpion.
    Made sure the area in and around the anjimals were pretty interesting splurge for education boards.
    And ALWAYS ALWAYS donation boxes.
    Most of my money has cone from donations. Until the customers start requesting to spend more on tickets. .
    Only had vending machines to start and one keeper per two or three habitat (depending on size).
    I had one financial scare so far cause I hired too many new workers and i feel bad for them when I fire anyone in the game lol
    A little later if you can afford marketing think kids - kids need an adult so one kid usually equals one adult paying. Adds up.
    Edited to add: Also you can use the habitat animals to sell them and get some *bank*

    Use the ultimate cheat for free energy. Place down zoo entrances way below the ground so they don't interfer with your paths etc and you have unlimited free power wherever you want to have it. Plus placing them costs next to nothing. So not the visitor spawners, just the entrances.

    • @PawsBuild
