Yes the West (particularly the USA) has lost its way in that regard. I’m all for self-expression but there are times to leave the tennis shoes and graphic t-shirts at home in favor of pieces that are more appropriate for a particular occasion. Furthermore, those of us who do opt to take that tack - whether for specific occasions or on a regular basis - should not be looked upon a certain way or judged negatively for wanting to look our best if said version of “Our Best” adheres to a more classic aesthetic. Classic dressing is not a crime!

I wear a different tie to work every day. I am up to around 850, almost all of them are silk. They cover my wall and it is my backdrop on the occaisions that I work from home. It was pricey at first but it made me stand out at the company (no one wears ties daily, not even the CEO) and I attribute it to the company doubling my salary.

Great recommendations there. I love all three. I would add: Turnbull & Asser (terrific for paisleys), Amidé Hadelin, Stefano Ricci (which I hardly ever see mentioned but which are superb), Charvet (I know Hugo has mentioned before) and for bowties, I highly recommend R Hanauer in the US and Le Noeud Papillon in Australia.

Hugo, I love your work and your books. I share your love of ties and also lean towards stripes. My son is 13 and already eyeing up my collection. I have rationalised down to about 75 ties. I wanted to give a little feedback that the video felt a little like an advert for 4 companies. If this is your business model fair enough but I was supprised that so many companies did not get even a small mention. Obvious brands come to mind such as Hermes, Ferragamo, E.Marinella, Shibumi, Silvio Fiorello to mention just a few. I appreciate you may wish not to promote some of these but just your brief opinion (good or bad) would have been valuable to me. Thanks again for the great work you do.

    • @SARTORIALTALKS
      @SARTORIALTALKS  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

Dear friend, many thanks for your feedback. It's actually not an advert for these companies (even if I would be happy if they do sell a few ties thanks to this video) because this video is not financed by them (two of them had even no idea I was going to publish it!!) and I perceive no commissions on sales (not our style and business model). The question asked by many of you was: what are your favorite ties and the ones you possess and wear the most. And those 4 brands represent 75% of my tie closet, together with a few Charvet, Petronius Milano, Marc Guyot, F. Marino, Dare in Paris and Hermes (which by the way I did mention). Otherwise we personally know Maurizio Marinella (they have a chapter in our book "the Italian Gentleman"), we never tried Shibumi in Florence but we heard great things about them and we also know the work of Fiorello (from Sicily) which is obviously very good. You could also add Albizzati, Drake's and so many others. But this would require a much longer video. All my very best, Hugo

Thank you for sharing these ties! I'm taking notes and looking at the kinds of ties I want to add to my collection. Medallion ties are a gap for me right now, but I'm also seeing how you're using much more muted ties so well compared to what I wear. Ah, Hugo! When you said 'ties are about taste', that hit the nail on the head! I definitely wear a tie as an expression of myself. I buy a lot of my ties in thrift/charity shops: I always look for vintage and/or quality. My favourite tie is one that looks from a far as silk - in fact its a wool tie with a muted paisley pattern. It knots exquisitely! It looks like men's neckwear is being transferred from the business to pleasure? Discuss....
    Merci,
    Tony

    Hi Hugo
Accessories for a man to finish off the complete outfit is a tie. Every tie looks good on you.😃😃 I love them all ❤
Fashion for men went from one extreme to the other back in the day and so did ties. I remember seeing men with ‘kipper ties’ growing up
My late father would wear what was called ‘the kipper tie’ in the 70’s.
He would also wear ties using the ‘windsor knot’ effect in the 50’s and 60’s and looked so much ‘sharper’

Interesting that Tie Your Tie focuses on vintage materials. Japanese artists are obsessed with getting the material right before anything starts. The best chefs, for example, insist on the right producer and producing region of rice for each dish, the right breed and breeder for beef, chicken, etc. They usually know the breeders and farmers by name and visit their estates regularly. Glad to check in after a long absence. Nice job Hugo and Sonya!

There are some great examples in your own personal collection. But more important than the individual choices, was that you showed that you could find high quality ties at reasonable, even modest, prices. Even TieYourTie has selections in its shop that are around the 100 € mark.
A good follow up to this episode would be to pick a few ties, both stripes and patterns, that you wear with different suits, and explain what makes the tie work with that shirt and suit combination. Even those who are skilled at putting outfits together can benefit from learning the thought processes of others in putting an outfit together.

A lovely tie selection Hugo and your enthusiasm for ties is refreshing, to say the least.
I always wear a tie at work - no, I’m not a banker 😂 - as a mark of respect for the occasion, but I have also been wearing a tie some days on my day off too, for about 18 months.
A little story for you: I started going out in a tie on the weekends and one day, in my local coffee shop, a lady allowed me to go in front of her in the queue because she looked at my tie and assumed I was at work, so I accepted haha.
I really think people treat you with more respect when you wear a tie, but I don’t wear one to be noticed - quite the opposite actually.
A big reason why I think ties have fallen out of favour with many men is because of the perceived lack of practicality associated with them.
    Thanks for another informative episode.

Hello both , just discovered your channel, at 56 I'm starting my own upgrade as it were 😊 in dressing Well, oddly enough it actually takes a little courage, not much I know but a little courage for most men to wear a suit or sports jacket and maybe waistcoat, tie for no particular reason, occasion.
Especially when we mess it up 😢 as I do, but on the upside I've had a few nice compliments from women which is nice, really is.
And lastly the question I expected which is where are you going? Why the suit? What's the occasion? Well I've decided to say the truth right from the Start, I either just smile or say " I want to". Take care.

Hi Hugo. I enjoyed watching this video and learning about brands I did not know about.
I have ties from Shibumi, Cappelli, E. Marinella and Budd.
What is your view on matching tie widths and lapel widths? Do you have a separate video on that subject?

I have the 12 fold navy and gold tie from the Parisian Gentleman collaboration with Calabrese. It holds a special place in my collection. For it’s beauty, rarity and pur3 craftsmanship!
One question Hugo, i would love to have a vicuña tie in the natural color, do you think it would look nice and be wearable?
    Thanks

The tie is the only purely decorative accessory in the traditional male wardrobe. Therefore it is rather strange that so many men have stopped wearing ties. Perhaps, the associations are stronger than we think. The tie is still very strongly associated with the corporate world, banking, finance, government, and law. I never had to wear a tie to work, so for me the tie is associated with Sunday at church, nights at the opera, and elegant parties I attend a few times a year. Women put a lot of effort into looking attractive when going out. For men it’s so much easier than for women and yet men seem to be unwilling to even tie a tie.

When you purchase a tie, do you buy the tie that you know will work with a suit/jacket that you already own or buy the tie because of the quality , color, and design and worry about coordinating it with your wardrobe later. Thanks!
