The "handguard" is still treated as a literal thing, no one's hands phase through it during proper animations, so that is still a flaw even within the fantasy context.

This is also riding on the change that the key teeth are sharp. In the games I think it’s a squared/blocky “edge” to the teeth. I think it’s more of a metaphorical blade than a physical one

Certain characters do use their keyblades mostly one-handed, though; specifically, Riku, Aqua, and Ventus (who uses a reverse grip, which is INSANE). 2.) The guard and handle on your build seems noticeably smaller than in the games. In-game it's more squared off, the handle seems a bit longer, and the guard seems a bit wider. This combined with #1 could maybe alleviate the issues with the guard to a degree. 3.) The Kingdom Key would obviously be ludicrously heavy if made to-scale, but I could see the "teeth" of the keyblade adding some additional weight at the tip to make it hit harder as a club, and make the balance a bit more even with how huge and thick the guard is. That being said, Sora has huge anime hands, so maybe not. 4.) The guard could maybe be used as a form of visual indexing if you wanted to hit with the teeth, or when using some of the thinner keyblade designs since it's so big and obvious. Although this is the most out-there point. It's obviously a HORRIBLE sword, and too heavy to use if made 1:1 with the game. But if you were superhuman, it would be an okay club with a guard, I think.
I am not going to defend Ventus, but at the time of Birth by Sleep he basically was a newbie to wielding a Keyblade. Him reverse-gripping a Keyblade indicates his lack of familiarity with wielding a weapon and also, as of the Kingdom Heart chi stories, indicate he probably is far more powerful than he looks in Birth by Sleep if he can easily reverse-grip the Keyblade and not get winded or injured by wielding it like that.

There is some evidence in game that the blade does have a magical characteristic to slashes with it having a glowing beam along where you swing it in certain games. Makes sense that a game about magic uses a sword that cuts, with magic. Still yeah it's one of the least practical weapons ever.

in the keyblades defense its not a weapon to fight the normal physical enemy's, but as much as i love the series and the various keyblades designs they defiantly aren't a weapon for our world
it would have, a negative one lol. the chain and pendant/keychain charm constantly whip around and hit the wielder in the fingers, wrists, and face, regardless of the full guard.
the thing is that there are some keyblades that do have edges on the side that Sora swings them like Oblivion,Lionheart and some more so you can cut with them.Ofcourse they all share the same guard sooooooo😋
Lets be honest, Disney got weapons designers in on the games specifically to design a cool weapon, that kids COULD NOT hurt each other with thanks to poor handle design.
My husband and I LOVE your content. This video had us both rolling in laughter. Between Tony at the beginning, the gourd slicing, and your reactions...Comedy gold!
The fact that Sora doesn't swing with the Key Teeth kind of gives the idea that the Teeth doesn't actually have a blade and it is purely just a big key with a guard. Truly one of the most weird "weapon" designs.
As a fan of Kingdom Hearts for over 20 years I’ve long accepted that the Keyblade is as practical as Pro Wrestling is real but just like wrestling ITS SO FUCKING COOL!!!!
I saw the recent sword whip video and thought I’d give a suggestion. What about Hoslow’s Petal Whip from Elden Ring: “Metal whip formed of razor-sharp chain-link blades that have the appearance of flower petals. This work of art is handed down though the generations of the illustrious House Hoslow. High dexterity is required to wield this weapon, but it excels at inflicting devastating blood loss.” Think it would be interesting to test out with safety measures in place.
Video idea, a redemption of the bad, take the worst weapons you have faithfully recreated eg this one, and do modifications to them with keeping the spirit of them as intact as you can
Disney purposefully designed the keyblades to be unusable weapons, they obviously got experts in to create a neat design, that can be held, that can be swung by kids (in foam form), but has a handle guard that prevents power, has blades that distribute the force, and shows the strikes with the blunt end in the game.
Um, I don't think Disney put much input into the keyblade designs, they mostly care about the disney movies side of KH. There is a reason the Kingdom Hearts side is so feckin whackadoo.
If you'd like any pointers on welding, I can give you some advice. I'm an AWS D1.5 certified welder. The thing that sticks out to me is the gauge of steel you're using; usually for something like that I'd run .030 diameter MIG wire, but the machines are pretty expensive and you have to buy 75/25 Argon-Co2 gas cylinders to make it work. That said, your angle is a little too aggressive for what looks to be 7018 rods. You want to be at about 15-20 degrees (almost perpendicular to the joint) and just drag it in a stringer. You'll feel the rod want to drag in the direction you're welding, and just track your weld puddle. Weaving tends to trap slag inside the joint, and is generally not practiced very much anymore.
How about making a functional version of it? Changing the round shaft for an actual sharpened blade on 1 side (with a point) and putting an axe head at the other side? Maybe with a curved handle and handguard to avoid having 2 handguards.
Ok so, a couple of things, while I would never demand this from anybody who isn't a fan of the series, I do find it interesting enough to share You mentioned that Sora tends to hit with the backside of the blade, instead of the teeth, while that may be the case, he also uses the teeth a lot of times, specially when the purpose is to strictly cut something, as seen in various finishers, like one where he gets the keyblade sideways and slashes with the teeth, or in various reaction commands, but yes, he does seem to use the backside of the blade way more, that is easily explained because of 2 things, one, the blade is simultaneously a blunt and a slashing weapon, dunno how, it can make the cleanest cuts of all time while looking like a goddamn skeletal dragon, or can bonk someone in the head while looking like a literal knife, so video game magic; but also because Sora wasn't trained to become a keyblade wielder, his training was a wooden sword, and while he as in the latest entry of the series that he's playable, has show quite a lot of mastery in the use of the blade, his usual stance and some old habits of his are still showing, I mention that because there are quite a lot of wielders in the series, and it would be interesting to see how more trained wielders act and their different blade builds, like Terra for example, his keyblade is on the longer and heavier side, and he wields it like a long sword, with huge and heavy swings, while others are just as dumbfounding as Sora's, wait until you see how Ventus fights, Riku is another very interesting character to analyze his stance, more based on diagonal slashes and stabs, having a blade more built like a sword than any other in the series, or Mickey the Mouse having more focus on switching between horizontal and vertical slices (while also mimicking Yoda from Star Wars), in summary, its all extremely dumb and would never work in real life, but there are some more experient characters that have more specific keyblades matching their specific style that they honed through the series, meanwhile Sora just made do with his muscle memory fighting with literally a glorified almighty stick, in which literally any swing was effective, which translated quite nicely to a weapon that on demand can be the sharpest or bluntest weapon ever
You deserve more subscribers bro! I discovered you from Metatron’s video on your sword fight with Shad, I’m looking forward to watching the backlog along with future videos!
Here's a weapon that actively hurts you. Mea Culpa sword from Blasphemous. It literally has thorns coming from the handle to punish its penitant wielder. That aside, i would love to see some weapons from Blasphemous 1 and 2 or maybe the Penitent One's helmet cause its sick
Maki's three-part staff with blades from Blade of the immortal would be an interesting one to test + some of the other weapons such as Giichi's sickles or Anotsu's axe like blade
For Hobby Welding, I highly recommend investing in a Flux Core Welder. That gives you the ease of MIG Welding where everything is integrated into the Weld Gun but you don't need to use gas shielding. They're pretty damn cheap these days (harbor freight sells one for like 135 bucks) and if you have some project car or make random little projects like Tyranth here it's much easier and tends to produce better welds with less skilled hands than Stick Welding does. Not a Welder, I just work in Maintenance offering this advice from the perspective of a guy who makes 'good enough' welds.
I'm impressed that you didn't use it the reasonable way right from the start. I was so ready to enter into this video expecting you to use the keyblade as an axe rather than as a base-ball bat. Don't get me wrong, you still did, but atleast you knew better and addressed as such before committing the sin, so I respect it. xD Props to you for doing your research, cause alot of the fans don't even realize they are using it backwards.
Fun fact: originally the Keyblade was more or less only effective against "those with darkness in their hearts" early in the lore. If we trust the original writing team's concept on this thing, it's supposed to be useless against mundane foes. It's a magic sword only capable of banishing "darkness." Of course, that never stopped Sora from using it to bludgeon a cheetah... and we don't exactly know what amount of "darkness" in one's "heart" qualifies them to be a target. I guess primal hunter instincts count? In the first game's animations, you can literally see the cross guard clip through Sora's wrists multiple times. They knew. Y'know perhaps if we were the Keyblade's chosen wielder, our wrists would be phasing through the metal too...
I suppose this means that everybody has darkness in their hearts? Which, given the later assertions that darkness is a fundamental and primordial force, means that the keyblade “working against those that have darkness in their hearts” is fundamentally redundant and works as a club on regular people and just becomes massively more effectively for the enemies Keyblade Wiedlers tend to come up against.
Matt Easton from scholagladiatoria and Todd from Todd's Workshop once demonstrated a warhammer with a sword-guard. I feel like that's the closest to a historically accurate keyblade.
A keyblade would be cool as a ceremony-only thing in a world without magic. With a magic system, it could be awesome, especially if it helps overcome design elements from the As-Depicted-In-Game appearance. If the design could be modified to still look like a classical key and be effective, even better But realistically, I'm not surprised it's not great.
If I may suggest an improvement on the Keyblade's fundamental design without sacrificing its thematic design as a key-shaped weapon, it'd be to put the hilt behind the key handle instead of making the key handle the hilt? That way, the key handle could be more serviceable as a crossguard than a hilt?
I applaud your honesty with an unfamiliar fandom. You were fair when you criticized the actual practical uses of the keyblade as a weapon. In fact you weren't blinded by the lore of the series so you didn't make excuses for it like I would.
I liked this video for saying "Aluminum" correctly. It's nice the rare time I hear it. Also, the Key Blade was a huge reason I decided to never play KingdomHearts. So this felt like confirming all my ideas about it.
The keyblade in our world is basically just a metal stick (tip heavy) with a weird cross guard, that can potentially open a large door (if it was ever made with a big lock in mind)
I know that high-quality images of the Kingdom Key show the handle being knurled (a word I just learned from Google). I wonder how much that would help with the slipperiness of a round handle. You'd still have the horrible guard in the way, though.
I just finished a Kingdom Hearts playthrough marathon, and now here we are. I was thinking of asking Shad to do a Keyblade analysis for the next April Fools, but this works too.
A magical weapon is a lot less functional without magic. Still a good video though! The guard problem always bothered me. It looks so awkward and uncomfortable to use.
The lore reason is that side of the keyblade emits a blade of light. From experience of owning and holding a replica keyblade, its handle is indeed extremely uncomfortable. It definitely wasn't made to be practical. Tryanth: the keyblade sucks as a practical weapon Kh fans: ok i believe you.
The funniest part is, the teeth are supposed to be the same thickness as the pole, and the bars around the handle are also supposed to be the same thickness as the blue portion, meaning you wouldn't have this cutting ability if the blade were done accurately to the game. It'd just be blunt.
I think that the design itself can definitely be altered for better results. For example, removing that guard and giving it either a disk guard or a sword guard. making that tube into an oval or diamond shaped cross section. Another idea is to make the "axe head" portion kinda flow smoothly from the tube. You could also give it three prongs instead of two and vary the lengths of them to see what method is more effective. So my thoughts are that while the idea is functional depending upon the design itself, that specific design is not.
I think it could be cool to see you make a 'realistic' sword in the same sort of time frame and with the same sort of materials just to see how that compares to the fantasy weapons you make.
To play devil's advocate, I do think using the flat edge does has at least one valid reason. What if the teeth bend and then the key doesn't work as intended? I don't recall key blades being indestructible.
I like how you include details such as comfort of the cut, sometimes it looks epic and amazing when you cut something but just by watching new can’t tell if it felt like a super trash cut
The thing about the keyblade is that it's not a real melee weapon but rather a magical weapon. The Keyblade is made of light and attacks the target with essentially an infusion of light which in the KH universe is just spiritual energy. The "blade" part is mostly just a metaphor.
Some of the keyblade variants are better... in terms of the pole/blade part. But, man, the guard just ruins all of them. Bare minimum they need to be rotated 90 degrees, if they wanna keep the design mostly intact.
The guard is like that for the "key" appearance. It's supposed to look like the part where you grip the key with your fingers to turn it in the lock. Rotating it would ruin that. They should put an opening on one side to make room for the user's wrist. It would still just be a fancy pole to whack things with in real life though.
A few things missing from this weapon, 1, it has no magic slots, and 2, it can't lock or unlock anything. Also, it meant to cut through darkness, not people. When used on people, it's more of a bludgeoning weapon with the teeth of the key acting as a weight for more force.
Yours functions far better than what I imagine the 'official' replicas are capable of! They also have the 'guard' made of plastic and it spins... I think they also have a short chain with a pendant attached to the end of the 'hilt' I believe, just to annoy the user? No idea why.
Got a suggestion for you, Tyranth: the Fate series. A game/anime/manga series about mages summoning the spirits of warriors (primarily) from history and legend to do battle, usually for the Holy Grail.
The base keyblade that it is based around, the Kingdom Key, the teeth of the blade is thick, it is a hammer not an axe. There is many types of Keyblades with varying thickness, there is some that is more thin and blade like and some that are thicker, but the base one is a hammer irl. I'm not talking about whatever the damage type might be in lore.
Technically you also could have halfed the blade, and the handle section acts more like a counter-balance but that's just a thought Great episode as always mate!
I feel like it would be more effective than a pipe on hit. Not considering the guard at least. The end of the key is has a LOT of extra weight on it in the games. I think it's more of a weighted pipe. Or a weird club of sorts.
I would argue that the obstructing guard(?) actually help find/maintain edge alignment. You'll know because the inner guard(?) would be pressing against your forearm when the edge is aligned. It's just a matter of crafting the guard in a way so that it doesn't scratch/rub harshly into your arm. That being said, I agree that it's pretty much a glorified mace/baton/axe at best.
its more of a weird axe used as a sword than a sword but there's probably some weird design from the past that melded what is essentially an axe head to a longsword blade
2:05 one big thing is right stick for the metal your using , as for tips your travel angle it way too shallow , you generally want 5 to 15 degrees off of 90 from what your working on, the other thing is your going a bit fast but other then that it seemed decent
I think this is a weapon that with a few tinkers, could work out as an ok weapon. Either by making it like an Uruk Hai Sword, where the key part would be like the little spike shape they have on the back of the head of their blades. Oooor, by converting it into something more like a war hammer or mace where the key part is like a crow's beak.
I feel a sword similar to the dream sword with a magical aura in the shape of a key bleeding through would’ve made more sense but wouldn’t be easy for cosplayers to replicate
As a fan of kingdom hearts, I have accepted that the keyblade itself is garbage as a real weapon but great in its own universe

@@Skylancer727Some nothing. It’s literally shown to be a magic weapon and wielders channel spells thru it. It’s also shown that a wooden sword does nothing to heartless but the Keyblade wipes em out. But then, the heartless aren’t average beings.
@@Skylancer727 I think i have read about that too and beacause of that i have considered it as magicial weapon to slay creatures of darkness. When i am playing KH games i can suspend my disbelief beacause of the worlds have even more wacky stuff going on than weapon shaped like key and some of the designs are very cool too. Maybe not sword like but works of art.
I didn't realize. Of course it got a 13, it was destined.
I want to see Tyranth make his ideal version of a keyblade. Changing the guard, handle, teeth etc. But that’s probably just going to be an ax
Probably.
I guess Shads version would be stick.
You know these ultra secure keys for safes? The ones with four beards?
I would essentially make it a sharpened mace with a design like this.
and the keychain!
Now to check out the other Keyblade designs. Most would probably face the same issues but the Abyssal Tide from 358/2 Days might have promise
Rikus KH1 "keyblade" (the dagger shaped weapon) would be pretty brutal tbh
Rikus kh3 keyblade
Its basically anmetal slab, works just fine, lol
3:52 that is the power of the keyblade right there!
in the keyblades defense its not a weapon to fight the normal physical enemy's, but as much as i love the series and the various keyblades designs they defiantly aren't a weapon for our world
UNFAIR! You didn't add the keychain at the end! That would have made a huge difference! >:(
/s
it would have, a negative one lol. the chain and pendant/keychain charm constantly whip around and hit the wielder in the fingers, wrists, and face, regardless of the full guard.
the key blade is more of a bonk stick in the shape of a key, it isn't really meant for slicing cleanly lol.
The problem is it isn’t a good bonk stick either
@@ScreenTested is it cause of the shitty guard and round handle?
@@EeveetoUmbreon25 yes
And then Sora used it to cut through buildings.
Before anything: The handle. The handle is the #1 killer of the weapon.
Without it, it could be a relatively respectable axe / mace.
the thing is that there are some keyblades that do have edges on the side that Sora swings them like Oblivion,Lionheart and some more so you can cut with them.Ofcourse they all share the same guard sooooooo😋
Lets be honest, Disney got weapons designers in on the games specifically to design a cool weapon, that kids COULD NOT hurt each other with thanks to poor handle design.
@@littlekong7685besides the dagger shaped weapon Riku is weilding in KH1. Imagine that thing out of steel and razor sharp
@@littlekong7685the metal chocobo begs to differ.
3:58 oh my lord. This had me rolling! "...You're being dramatic!" 🤣🤣🤣
Those cuts were neither simple nor clean.
tl;dr: thank god they're magically-infused weapons, because they're terrible IRL. Lol.
I saw the recent sword whip video and thought I’d give a suggestion. What about Hoslow’s Petal Whip from Elden Ring:
“Metal whip formed of razor-sharp chain-link blades that have the appearance of flower petals. This work of art is handed down though the generations of the illustrious House Hoslow. High dexterity is required to wield this weapon, but it excels at inflicting devastating blood loss.”
Think it would be interesting to test out with safety measures in place.
Video idea, a redemption of the bad, take the worst weapons you have faithfully recreated eg this one, and do modifications to them with keeping the spirit of them as intact as you can
That would boil down to how much does an axe have to be modded for it to capture the spirit of a keyblade
Yes, I clicked immediately and reflexively ! Do Riku's blades too. I feel like the most functional keyblades should get a chance too.
Soul Eater would be pretty cool, although I think that has a round handle, too.
How about making a functional version of it? Changing the round shaft for an actual sharpened blade on 1 side (with a point) and putting an axe head at the other side? Maybe with a curved handle and handguard to avoid having 2 handguards.
You do realize that Sora uses the Keyblade two handed right? There's a reason for that. Also it's effectively a club the way Sora uses it.
You could take this to shad and extoll the virtues of the keyblade all the while laughing at him as he gets frustrated.
I kinda wanna see it dumbed down even further. Just a pipe with the front half of the guard.
Might be a decent baton
Ok
Keyblade getting a score of 13 is the most appropriate thing.
Tyranth
Did you know?
Ok so, a couple of things, while I would never demand this from anybody who isn't a fan of the series, I do find it interesting enough to share
You mentioned that Sora tends to hit with the backside of the blade, instead of the teeth, while that may be the case, he also uses the teeth a lot of times, specially when the purpose is to strictly cut something, as seen in various finishers, like one where he gets the keyblade sideways and slashes with the teeth, or in various reaction commands, but yes, he does seem to use the backside of the blade way more, that is easily explained because of 2 things, one, the blade is simultaneously a blunt and a slashing weapon, dunno how, it can make the cleanest cuts of all time while looking like a goddamn skeletal dragon, or can bonk someone in the head while looking like a literal knife, so video game magic; but also because Sora wasn't trained to become a keyblade wielder, his training was a wooden sword, and while he as in the latest entry of the series that he's playable, has show quite a lot of mastery in the use of the blade, his usual stance and some old habits of his are still showing, I mention that because there are quite a lot of wielders in the series, and it would be interesting to see how more trained wielders act and their different blade builds, like Terra for example, his keyblade is on the longer and heavier side, and he wields it like a long sword, with huge and heavy swings, while others are just as dumbfounding as Sora's, wait until you see how Ventus fights, Riku is another very interesting character to analyze his stance, more based on diagonal slashes and stabs, having a blade more built like a sword than any other in the series, or Mickey the Mouse having more focus on switching between horizontal and vertical slices (while also mimicking Yoda from Star Wars), in summary, its all extremely dumb and would never work in real life, but there are some more experient characters that have more specific keyblades matching their specific style that they honed through the series, meanwhile Sora just made do with his muscle memory fighting with literally a glorified almighty stick, in which literally any swing was effective, which translated quite nicely to a weapon that on demand can be the sharpest or bluntest weapon ever
Ah the Keyblade. A weapon that looks like a key, is used like a sword, seems to want to be an axe, but is instead a toob
You deserve more subscribers bro! I discovered you from Metatron’s video on your sword fight with Shad, I’m looking forward to watching the backlog along with future videos!
Thanks for watching hopefully you enjoy some of the older stuff as well
It's a big metal stick you can twirl.
How could it be bad?
Ohhhhhhhh. Right.
Round handle? No problem. You can index your grip by the guard digging into your wrist. 😉
Don't get me wrong, you still did, but atleast you knew better and addressed as such before committing the sin, so I respect it. xD
Props to you for doing your research, cause alot of the fans don't even realize they are using it backwards.
Fun fact: originally the Keyblade was more or less only effective against "those with darkness in their hearts" early in the lore. If we trust the original writing team's concept on this thing, it's supposed to be useless against mundane foes. It's a magic sword only capable of banishing "darkness."
Of course, that never stopped Sora from using it to bludgeon a cheetah... and we don't exactly know what amount of "darkness" in one's "heart" qualifies them to be a target.
Screentested tackled one of my favorite weapons in my most favorite game franchise. Best Thanksgiving ever👍
A keyblade would be cool as a ceremony-only thing in a world without magic.
With a magic system, it could be awesome, especially if it helps overcome design elements from the As-Depicted-In-Game appearance.
If the design could be modified to still look like a classical key and be effective, even better
But realistically, I'm not surprised it's not great.
Fierce Deity Sword from Zelda Majora's Mask.
Love the video as always man!
Tryanth: the keyblade sucks as a practical weapon
Kh fans: ok i believe you.
I wouldn't mind a part 2 where you try to optimize the design even if it still fails.
The funniest part is, the teeth are supposed to be the same thickness as the pole, and the bars around the handle are also supposed to be the same thickness as the blue portion, meaning you wouldn't have this cutting ability if the blade were done accurately to the game. It'd just be blunt.
8:26 sire, thats… thats a squash.
Subscribed. Glad to find your channel. I’ve appreciated your valuable contribution to Shad’s channel.
To play devil's advocate, I do think using the flat edge does has at least one valid reason. What if the teeth bend and then the key doesn't work as intended? I don't recall key blades being indestructible.
3:57 the power of the Keyblade compels you! 🤣 That was perfect!
I like how you include details such as comfort of the cut, sometimes it looks epic and amazing when you cut something but just by watching new can’t tell if it felt like a super trash cut
Number 13... The Keyblade's Chosen One!
I once had a wooden keyblade. It was basically a club
If Tyranth ever wants to try a "comfort 0" sword, he should look into Blasphemous' Mea culpa.
Mea Culpa would be the nearest weapon to reach 0 comfort.
At least it doesn't have spikes in the idol.
I'm pretty sure he doesn't exactly _want_ to try a weapon that's actively hurting the user.
He still might, though.
I appreciate your humbleness and learning to weld for your craft.
Honor and respect to you sir.
I love the KH games, but I also agree with your thoughts on it in the real world usage. Amazing video as always! Thank you
The thing about the keyblade is that it's not a real melee weapon but rather a magical weapon.
7:52 omg the silly sound effects are real.
Technically you also could have halfed the blade, and the handle section acts more like a counter-balance but that's just a thought
Great episode as always mate!
Another very interesting video.
Suggestion: can you review weapons from Vermintide 2 (or Warhammer fantasy in general for that matter)?
If the back of the key split down the middle it would still look like a key and be more comfortable to use.
Very nice episode thanks.
That being said, I agree that it's pretty much a glorified mace/baton/axe at best.
will you ever do saurons mace
Well probably but got a different lotr project to do first
"What would get a 0 for comfort?"
Skull knight's Rose sword from berserk.
Don't you see how destructive it is. Kill hit even without touching.
its more of a weird axe used as a sword than a sword but there's probably some weird design from the past that melded what is essentially an axe head to a longsword blade
2:05 one big thing is right stick for the metal your using , as for tips your travel angle it way too shallow , you generally want 5 to 15 degrees off of 90 from what your working on, the other thing is your going a bit fast but other then that it seemed decent
"A grinder and paint makes me the welder i ain't"
The key blade always reminds me of red vs blue: "how is a sword a key?"
"maybe it's a key, and when you stab it in someone, it unlocks their death..."
@4:04 "We just started, I didn't even touch you!"
Just goes to show the power of the keyblade! 😂
I feel a sword similar to the dream sword with a magical aura in the shape of a key bleeding through would’ve made more sense but wouldn’t be easy for cosplayers to replicate
