    I've said this on a video on Skall's channel regarding this blade, but I'm gonna toss this out here as well. The design of the energy sword in the Halo lore comes from the fact that the two blades absolutely CANNOT touch one another. The way they are projected causes both blades to have opposing charges, meaning that if they come into contact then they instantly short out with an electrical explosion. Which is why they are a one-shot kill in the game and they have an energy limit. Every time you stab an opponent a circuit is completed between the two blades, causing said electrical explosion to go off inside the target and deplete the weapon's battery.

    Functionally one of the biggest factors is the handle design.
    Saying it's made for an alien is understanding the real issue. It's' designed and scaled for an alien that's larger and most importantly has two thumbs on each hand.
    If humans had a second thumb instead of a pinky it would significantly increase grip strength and support that handle design for both slashing and stabbing.

    Something else that might improve a practical version of it would be to have there be a transition from a flat crossection near the handle to a diamond crossection near the tips to allow for stronger thrusts and parries. It would still suck at slashing though because that requires a completely different design.

    I would like to add a small, ultimately inconsequential caveat to the lore dump of the energy sword, particularly the existence of steel bladed versions. Before the boost in technology that the Elites gained from joining the covenant, the energy sword was a physical weapon, not an energy based one. The steel versions existed as a proto-sword variant for centuries on Sanghelios before the adoption of the Type 1 energy variant, and Elite recruits still train with physical blades before being permitted to ever wield a true energy sword in combat.

  • @Esperologist
    @Esperologist หลายเดือนก่อน

    Thinking about the energy side of it... that puts the weight further back into the handle. I mean, energy blades can't weigh much.
    I still don't understand how energy blades collide with things. The energy is what does the cutting... but that energy is in motion, or fluid. It's basically energy being somehow controlled into a shape. But the control can't be physical, since the energy has to be exposed to do the cutting. So if the energy fails to cut it, then the blades would fail to enter. It's like using an air knife... either it cuts, or it breaks form.
    And if you think jabbing your wrist with the metal was bad, imagine if that was energy that 'cuts better than metals'.
    I think the design would only make sense if the aliens' wrist was further back than a human... so the pivot point would not put the backward segments into their arm. Or if their armor would employ locks so they can't turn their wrist far enough (or at all) to result in stabbing themselves with the backward prongs.
    But, the design does look cool.

    Something to note is that Elites have 2 hearts so the reason for their sword design could be because its meant to primary be a thrusting weapon designed to be used against their own species by penetrating both hearts at once. We dont see them do it much in games likely because once they got the energy upgrade thrusting didnt matter all that much anymore when it can practically cut through anything regardless of how you choose to attack.

    Fun fact : In the Animatrix style movie Halo Legends, there is a section called "The Duel" featuring the transition period of the Elites at the start of the Covenants. In it, you DO see steel swords of the same design... So you COULD absolutely make a full steel version of the weapon, and it would be lore accurate without the need for a "this is not energy" disclaimer ;7

    a note about the gap in the blade and note i do not have exactly confirmation, but from what i remember, about blades going all the way down the gap, its not actually possible due to the way the blade solidifies despite being plasma is due to a contained magnetic field, any blade would stop at that bulge you pointed out

The risk you take in engaging in this 'dare' being your opponent possibly being able to lock your blade in between. I always imagined that the blade on this sword would be near weightless because it was an energy sword and all the weight would be in the handle. I don't know how you would test that though!

    I feel like because people talk a lot of crap about stainless steel for swords the people think the metal itself is no good.
    But it is good metal for what it's for, it's just not for swords for the most part.

    14:07 you’re ignoring the fact that the hilt/handle is perpendicular to the blade. That’s a MAJOR oversight on your part. It’s simply impossible to maintain any lateral force on the blade when your only leverage is grip strength. Even a TINY bit of pressure against the flat of the blade, wether by your opponent or by yourself during a cut, will turn the blade, either out towards your elbow which is bad, or in towards your chest which is fatally bad. Perpendicular handled blades are a seweslide weapon. How you can ignore this is beyond me.

    That weapon needs to spring steel. it does have a look. Just get rid of the points by the wrist. maybe put a rubber or hilt wrap around the lowest part of the blade by the hand? I would not want to extend my arm out far while using it.

    Would cutting the middle nub on the handle off fix the comfort? And maybe the wrist jab because your hand would be further?
    I mean, if it was tailored for human hands, why would there be a nub there

    I'd mention the gauntlet sword for a real world comparison. Which immediately makes me think of some likely issues. Like edge alignment, comfort of using it, and the less sturdy wrist position - without the reinforcement of the gauntlet.

      I don’t think the pata is a good comparison , there is some crossover but it’s still a perfectly functional sword blade, these are something else

    Seeing it in real metal...makes me think of a fancy kitchen tool to cut potatoes with the inside of the blade (if it is sharpened). But as an actual weapon I would prefer a club any day than a 2 piece sharp thing with poor support

    How do you think that a wrist brace would affect its performance (a properly made steel version of it, not the prop version)? Why don't you sit down with Shad and do a human design of this weapon on that software that he uses to draw concepts? Would be cool to see what you can come up with. Maybe even make one as well and do some testing?

    What, you mean you *don't* have some hyper advanced alien tech to use in your build? All in all great review, surprisingly effective in some places. You might find it interesting to know that there actually is a metal version in the lore. From the Halo Legends anime shorts (like the Animatrix but for Halo), one short takes place in the ancient past of the Covenant and we see an Elite using a metal sword that is in roughly the same shape as the energy sword. Double pronged blades with that gap in the middle, but this one looks more comfortable to hold at least since it doesn't have that protrusion in the middle of the grip the energy sword has.

      The closest weapon I would compare it to is the pata. It's an Indian weapon where it's basically a sword blade on a gauntlet.
      Kinda like a long katar/push dagger

      @thearcanehunter2736 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@Believer1980 Well, as I understand it, there are some rapiers that don't even have an edge, just a point. I would still call those swords. So not slicing well doesn't make it not a sword, some swords have different purposes. I think I could settle on calling it a short sword though, since it is on the short side, while being way longer than a dagger.
