How to fix a false overheating PS3 ( heat sensor )

  • Go to your local radio shack, pick up some non-spill flux, apply it around the two main chips like i do in the video and then your ps3 should function correctly. I did this because my ps3 would think it's overheating but really be cold to the touch. So I did this and it worked.

    Also, when applying flux, cuetips are inconvenient because they absorb a lot of flux and could leave cotton (a syringe with a long tight nozzle is ideal) and in order to reflow, the solder alloy must reach atleast 210'C, meaning that hairdryer should atleast be 275'C which is very unlikely. You are now relying on the thermal properties of the remaining flux, which isn't a permanent solution. And yes, I _am_ an electronics engineer, so trust me on that one.

    I'll have to give this a shot.
    For future reference, though, i would definitely advise against working on carpet.
    Aside from possible getting little parts caught and torn off by the carpeting, you could easily send a shock through it that might fry any of the important small chips.
    Just a thought.

    A lot of things done wrong here... A hair drier dos not really get hot enough to melt the solder, you should not be doing this reflow on carpet because of static ruining the board, also you need to wipe ALL the old thermal paste off the chips.

      A reflow is "paste containing solder that melts to form soldered joints when the circuit board is heated." Which you are doing by heating it up. You are Doing that process over again. Damn you need to learn to take criticism you douche.

    You REALLY should clean the heatsink and chip surfaces so they're bare before applying new paste: That's just asking for issues/headaches down the road by applying new paste to old dry paste.

  • @Fate8888

    2 things about this that are bothering me.
    1. As marley gibson said ... heat doesnt remove thermal compound.
    You should have removed it and reapplied new one before putting the PS3 back together.
    2. These plates that youre surrounding with flux ... they are just plates held by silicone. in a different video .. the guy cuts them off and then applies whatever is needed for the PS3 to work.
    But im happy it worked for you the way you did it.
    Im just saying there is a better way.

  • @fatherdeth13

    @TECHNODIRECT: His method may be wrong, but that foil is not foil he was using. It's an ESD ( Electro Static Discharge) bag that prevents static electricity from frying the circuitry. What he should have done was got an ESD wrist strap an grounded that to a metal frame.

    you did this with a normal hair dryer. normally that won't help much, rather take a heating gun. and it is a good idea to get rid of the terhmal paste befor you do a reflow. flux was a very good idea!

  • @teddo1032
    @teddo1032 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Fair enough. Do not work on carpet or anything synthetic, apply flux by making one big strip on one side and use medium temperature air (+-150'C) to blow it underneath IC and apply more heat, temperature depending on nozzle and airflow, atleast 350'C, with a controlled temperature device (Aoyue 852 is affordable, so no paintstrippers) or ideally a reflow oven. If that fails, remove IC from PCB and replace solder with lead based alloy with braid, paste and flux or stencil.

    I thought the same thing mate. These boards have heat sensitive components which cannot withstand high temps (300C+). Any repairs involving blanket heating your ENTIRE board with a heat gun or oven are bound to ruin things.
    SAYING THAT I have seen some (reputable) fixes involving heating the bottom of the board to high enough temperatures that it does fix it.
    It seems sketchy as hell, but can work.

  • @GaryBeltz

    What is the red gel like stuff in the little cup you stuck a Q-Tip in and spread around the area where the chips are?

  • @varietychannelalex
    @varietychannelalex  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    Yes, mine was spinning up to max when it wasn't even hot and then shut off. This fixed that. The non spill flux reconnects the chip to the motherboard like solder would. That's how it fixes it.

  • @varietychannelalex
    @varietychannelalex  11 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    @Paul Short just long enough to melt the flux. You have to let it sink under the chips.

    The reason being, you changed the thermal compound. I never said it wouldnt fix anything, at least for awhile, but the addition of flux was pointless. The highest temperature a hair dryer can ever put out is 140* F and most dont even get to 140*, they simply arent made to from the factory as a safety feature and your average flux doesnt activate til 257* F

  • @Toasty27-q6w

    Uh, duh. I know what a heat gun is.
    The problem is that a hairdryer is not "the next best thing", it is inadequate.
    No way he's getting that thing hot enough for a reflow. Unless the purpose was to just melt the flux to get it underneath the chips, which still makes no sense unless you're reflowing.

    I can confirm: (60Gb PS3) same problem (in summer, overheating after a few seconcs, at winter it worked OK but with fan at full speed), same solution (but I didn't use flux because I hadn't)
    I thought (like marley gibson) the problem should be the thermal paste, but I changed it and didn't work. The only I didn't try is to do the "homemade reballing"... and it worked.

    An anti static bag is only anti static inside. Remove the old thermal paste before applying new. Use more heat than a hair dryer. Try and actually melt something rather than only turning the flux into liquid. At least earth yourself from static. Never touch electricals internals while on a carpet. And basically get someone that understands what a reflow means and how it works.

    • @rubencrisitano9

      once that anti static bag has been opened its job is done and wont protect the parts anymore. especially while its on carpet. you need to wear a wrist band once the bag is open to keep static away.
