- Yes, i wash my leather jacket in the washing machine and put it in the dryer to shrink. Today i show you step by step how i did it with my favourite leather bomber jacket.
Now i feel its the perfect size!

I have a leather jacket size 46 that I bought 18 years ago when I was 180 pounds and muscular. Currently, I am size 38 and 164 pounds, yes very slim. I paid for the jacket $400 and I was hoping to sell it for $50 to $100 but nobody replied my Ad.
I was about give it away or tailor it to my needs although I have no experience what so ever doing so. When I saw your video to shrink a leather jacket using a dryer machine, I thought: "If the trick does not work I have nothing to loose".
I used your recommendations and the result was amazing! No to perfection but at least I can use my jacket again. Thank you so much for sharing. Cheers!
I like to post how I did it so here it goes.
Instructions:
Washer Machine: Hand wash cycle, medium load (amount of water), COOL WATER to was and rinse.
Dryer Machine: Select COTTON (high heat), Select More Dry. Run for 30 minutes and check if it fits. Restart and stop the dryer machine until desire fit. Enjoy!

I just finished shrinking my white leather jacket and I’m THRILLED with the results. You were right abt
everything. The white is still white and the smoothness and beauty of the lambskin is exactly as it was before I washed it. It shrank abt 1” everywhere. Thanks for making me aware of this incredible process.

Literally found this video and successfully shrunk my allsaints jacket to such a great fit! Last twenty minutes in the dryer-- had it on high and then every 5 mins removed and spritzed water on the areas of the leather, I wanted extra shrunken. Sooooo happy :)

I've just bought a leather jacket but feels a little big.. I might give this a try... quick cold rinse?? and put in dryer... how long does it to in dryer for please?? and what heat?? thank you
Thanks so much, this worked great! I tried this technique on my 1989 l.l. bean A2 goat hide jacket that was a size 46 tall. Before the arms were much too long and the torso felt baggy. Now it fits perfectly in both regards and looks way better now. I didn't have any fabric softener on hand so I just did a 20 minute quick wash with cold water, (no detergent), and put it in the dryer for 80 minutes on high heat, taking it out every 10 minutes to check on it. The knits were unaffected and I believe the '3M Thinsulate' jacket lining shrunk a tad as well, but prior to trying this technique the lining was very baggy to begin with so it was a good thing.
could this damage the leather? Or dry it out? Do you recommend perhaps turning the jacket inside out when doing all this just to give a little extra protection for the leather? Also worried about wrinkles with lamb leather which is thinner than yours and not as robust.
Hey Pauline, I have a 100% leather jacket. I need to shrink it to shorten the sleeves a bit. It's already fairly worn in and, being a guy, I like a little toughness to the leather anyway. Does the fabric softener help the leather to shrink or am I fine doing these steps without it? What's most important to me is that the jacket last and I'm assuming the tougher the leather is, the longer it'll last? Or does the softener HELP preserve the leather? Any insight is very appreciated. Thanks Pauline!

The fabric softener is to soften the leather , and it preserves the jacket..use it , do not wash without it! It will not change the tough side of the style!

This method works. I bought 3 leather jackets when we sailed to pakistan last month. I only fitted 2 but when I wear the 3rd leather jacket weeks later it was 2XL and I'm snug at L. I cannot return it because I'm currently in dubai rn.
Your methods works. Tried it twice though. Every cycle it shrink. Now it fit me perfectly. By the way the leather jackets only cost 50USD each.

You shrink by washing in cold water( small cycle is quick cycle.. maybe 5 minutes.. or 10 minutes) , wash ONLY WITH FABRIC SOFTENER! Then put it in the dryer. Let me know your results!👍🏻

The zippers and the lining dont shrink. The zippers take an ondulated shape, like a Lays chip.... Now the jacket fits me perfectly... but looks weird...

No, it’s relevant. Wash it in small cycle with ONLY FABRIC SOFTENER, and then put it in the dryer, keep checking until it’s the size you want👍🏻
Hello! it’s been a while since this video got posted so I’m not sure if you still check the comments but I have a question :D My sisters got a different kind of washing machine… You have to choose a program by the clothing material. There’s:
cotton eco
cotton
synthetics
mix
wool
silk
Bedding
simple Ironing
outdoor's clothes
Sport
I’ve put it on synthetics for about an hour (it was about medium dry?) And it didn’t do anything:( What program should I choose ?? (Btw I did wash it in washing machine and with softener)
Go for outdoor clothes.. or wool. You really don’t need one hour waging. It’s in cold water, fabric softener and small cycle.

Hei! I was wondering if instead of drying it in the sun you could just let it dry in the sun. Is that ok? Will it affect anything?
hey, i’m probably a little late but sadly no, drying it in the sun should be about the same as air drying. the reason it shrinks in the dryer is the heavy heat. unless you live somewhere with a hot climate, i doubt drying in the sun will do too much. i’m not a professional of any sort so i recommend also doing your own research, this is just my estimated guess. best of luck, hope that was at least a little helpful

Got a few questions!
1. My washing machine doesn't have a "small cycle"; it has a "quick wash" cycle which defaults to about 36 minutes-is that too long? Would I be right to assume I should set spin to low or perhaps even none? Or would medium spin be fine?
2. I'm really unfamiliar with using fabric softener; how much would you estimate I ought to use? Would one leather jacket be considered a "small load", as opposed to perhaps a fraction of a small load?
3. Does the jacket shrink more if you dry it for longer? Or does the drying simply expedite the time it takes to shrink? And is there any risk to using too hot of a drying setting (e.g., high instead of medium)-even if not for the leather, then perhaps for the other materials (e.g., polyester)?
4. Finally, I have a 36.5" chest and a 44" jacket. Do you think it would be able to shrink that much, or does this technique mainly apply to smaller shrinking goals? I wonder if this could be done multiple times to keep shrinking it (within reason, of course)?
I know that's a lot of questions, but I would greatly, greatly appreciate your response! I just bought a rare, one-of-a-kind jacket that's too big for me and was planning to have it professionally altered (a very expensive, time-consuming process), but it would be wonderful if I could save time and money by using this technique instead. Thanks so much!
Edit: I forgot to mention that my leather jacket has a tag that says _"Clean professionally by leather or suede expert."_ Does that mean I'm not supposed to put it in the washing machine? Or it's fine as long as I don't use detergent?
Quick cycle is fine.. just check from time to time to see how the jacket is.
Fabric softener… just a tablespoon is fine. NO DETERGENT.
If jacket is real leather… it will not ruin.

I found some highly-rated liquid fabric softeners on Amazon and asked if they'll work with leather, and in all cases, I was told no-even by the seller. Is there a certain kind of fabric softener I should use, or were they just mistaken when they said not to use those products with leather?

The jacket is just a little too big its stretched up a bit long in the arms and in the length. I hope this will help as it needs to shrink quite a bit :)

Well, yes, you can wet only where you wish to shrink, do everything alike, cold water, fabric softener, small cycle , then dryer, but ONLY WET where you want to shrink!

To be honest, I believe your jacket will not be the same after washing it. If you would like to give it a try..wash just a small part of the sleeves and if all goes well and nothing drastically happened, I would then go for it and wash like i did in my video..cold water..small cycle..FABRIC SOFTNER..then ..dryer to shrink!

I let it dry on small cycle.. max 10 minutes.. but keep on watching from time to time, so it will dry exactly how you want it too( shrink). 🙌🏻

Sure, it’s going to take a bit longer but.. if it didn’t shrink as much as you wanted, take it to the laundromat and use their dryer 👍🏻🙌🏻

I'm about to to this to mine. The sleeves are the perfect length but the jacket is a little baggy in the arms (I'm tall and slim). Hopefully the sleeves don't shrink too much.

Well..if you don't want the sleeves to shrink..keep on checking from time to time while it's in the dryer..and if by any chance it shrinks more than you expected arms length. .no problem..watch the video on how I STRETCH the leather jacket! Or, if you have any questions. .I will help you!😊👍
paulinejustliving I had to go to my mother's house and use her dryer as I don't own one. God, was my mom confused! But I did it. It has these little wavy wrinkles in some spots... looks kind of cool, slightly used. It looked new before but it was baggy in the arms, Is rather it this way. Thank you!

Sure, it will only take longer, and it will not shrink as much as a fryer would. If possible, take it to a laundromat, that would be great‼️🌹

The zipper doesn’t shrink.. it’s the leather that adapts to the zipper..
Hey I have a problem with a jacket it's not a leather jacket but it's a letterman jacket with 80%wool and 20%nylon body with polyester lining but the sleeves and pockets are made out of genuine leather and some people say that you should use hot water to shrink it but you might ruin the leather sleeves and other people say that you should use beeswax to protect the leather and I can't seem to find a really good answer to my problem so I would really appreciate it if you could help me with this problem if you know a solution i really don't want to buy a new jacket since this one has all my patches (getting my embroideries and patches in this jacket assuming I'd grow into it and even if I have a few years left to grow it seems like my genes failed me) and letterman jackets aren't that cheap to begin with so yeah. Nice video by the way.

Ok, you just want to shrink the leather( sleeves?) ..if that’s the problem wash the sleeves by hand with fabric softener, THEN dry it in the dryer small quick cycle.. that will shrink the leather, the secret here is to wash ONLY WITH FABRIC SOFTNER‼️👍🏻

The chenille patches will be fine, the fabric softner will keep them soft.

What if your jacket is leather---- but the inside liner is not---- it is polyester?
Not a problem, the problem would be trying to wash or a shrink FAUX LEATHER, if it’s real leather.. no worries. Before I put out the video, t did it with my own jackets to be sure nothing would be ruined.👍🏻🙌🏻

It’s a small cycle, should take 10 minutes max. Cold water and use ONLY FABRIC SOFTENER! You put the jacket in the washer then set it for a quick cycle.

I did this to 4 of my own leather jackets before I made this video, to be sure nothing wrong would happen. It worked beautiful on all 4 jackets. Not one was ruined🙌🏻

1. Fill the tank with cold water and the fabric softener then stir it up.
2. Put the jacket inside the tank.
3. Spin for 5-10 Minutes cycle.
4. Put inside the dryer for small cycle (5-10 Minutes) it will be a bit wet
5. Dont wear/stretch it if you want to shrink.
6. Sun dry/air dry is just the same thing. (Point 5 is more important). But if you want to stretch it just air dry it for more than a day.
7. Finished

Just took it out the dryer like 10 minutes ago and I'm so ecstatic it actually worked. Fits more snug around my waist, armpits, and arms. Took a little longer and a bit more heat though since I did this on a trench coat. And no it did not crinkle or get messed up. The inside has a zipper for a fur inside and it still zips perfectly!

it worked !!! my jacket is 2 years old but was a little big. I left my zipper pockets open and it "wore" them just a bit. I think it might have gone from a 44 size to a 42 maybe even tighter. it feels great!!

Just by touching it, it feels smooth , if it has a plastic feel to it...it's probably fake. Real leather has a nice touch.
If you can cut a very small piece of it from somewhere inside or pockets etc. and burn it, should smell like when your hair smell on burning. If smells like plastic when burning, not real.
