I used to live on a tropical island and could not even imagine what “cold” meant. “Cold” was like the AC was making me shiver while I wear my tank top. It was only after I moved to Canada, that I understand that “cold” means “shock”, “constricted movement”, “organ failure”, “death”. People who are speculating some wild story do not understand what “cold” is because they have never felt it themselves.
For anyone who thinks it’s suspicious just keep in mind a tiny boat like that weighted down w/ 300 pounds of bear in even slightly choppy swells is totally vulnerable. Now that I watched this episode. So sorry to hear about your friend, Garrett. Our weather is unforgiving. We get tons of rain, Ketchikan is part of 17 million acres of a temperate rainforest. Being in the wilderness with no one around is scary. Anyone visiting our beautiful town must be prepared for the winds and rain. Some times we have nice days. If you are wondering why he didn’t swim I have an idea behind his choice not to. Usually large rivers have a strong current. They came in on a boat that was fairly big, not a John boat. But you still have to be careful in a river that is only 8-10 feet deep. Water can appear “not that fast” on top but be super fast moving underneath. He was an experienced hunter so I imagine he knew that. A swim of 800m was risky. Just try to swim that far at your gyms pool. You can also fuel up beforehand and I still bet most people can’t finish. This guy had only eaten a few hundred calories over several days so his best chance was day 1 and at that time he wasnt in full wtf mode.
So firstly the 800m would have been narrowed down to about 100m or 200m max as he would have walked down the side of the river to be perpendicular to the boat. That swim is doable in freezing water in less than 5min.
This was so wierd. To assume your buddy died, and just sit there for 7 days 1/2 mile from your life saving boat. I just watched an episode of "I shoudlnt be alive" where a guy swam 10 miles after his plane crashed in the sea of Cortez during a ridiculous storm and made it to land. I know the waters cold but still.. I don't know just wierd. I wonder if I would've swam or stayed
Am so confused too..on the first episode he said after 1hr, he knew he was dead..he didn't even guess that the dude could have made it on the shore...I smell a rat
This is one of the most inspirational stories of survival. It is a true miracle on so many levels. How easy would it have been to be detected by bears or wolves yet he wasn't. You never know what God has planned! Keep the faith viewers! You are loved!
It's still unclear how the other guy died. And since they were seasoned Alaskan hunters how come they didn't know that 300 lb of extra-weight (bear meat in their case) was too much for their boat? And a "seasoned Alaskan hunter" without the means to make a fire just doesn't sound right ...
He drowned trying to get on the boat because when he was getting on the boat with the beer meat it was to heavy and he slipped of the boat. That’s the best explanation, and then he drowned because the water is cold
Adrian love and faith in God and his will power kept him alive. These true stories is both sad and amazing to watch. The human body is truly wonderful and fearfully made.
@@godfirst7216 I watched the 1st episode, but I'm none the wiser. All we know is that he left with the skiff and kayak but didn't come back for his friend.
yea all the people in the comments saying they would swim are idiots. If he had tried to swim he would have ended up dead just like his friend did. The water is far too cold to try and swim. Your organs would shut down. You wouldnt even be able to stay afloat, your brain wouldn’t be able to function. Youd lose feeling in all your limbs. I mean, it makes sense that he assumed adrian had died. Theres no way adrian would have just left his friend there like that unless something terrible happened to him. He knew that if the boat had capsized then he was a gonner, and it makes the most logical sense that, that was what happened to him.
He said he was only half mile which is 800 metres, from the boat, that's not very far. If he had got too the boat there would be food, water, bed and a radio to call for help. His story doesn't add up.
How did he become the hunted?didn't depict him being hunted at all.it showed only how the friend disappeared.the friend should have been in eye shot still, why is he laughing at his so-called story?so much more to the story ,I say".
@@_nick_d yes I'm sure it's cold but he says he was 1/2 mile from the mouth of the river, where the boat was anchored. So if he moved further towards the boat along the bank he would be closer to the boat. He could make fire so he could of made a raft. I mean he could of got within at least a 1/4 of a mile or 400 metres from the boat. Or was he on the boat the whole time cut it loose swam to the bank and waited for rescue.
Having thought about this in great depth i have come to the conclusion on how his friend died....ok here goes.. The guy was making his way back to the anchored boat with 300 lbs of bear meat when low and behold Baloo was heading towards him in a small row boat as he was visiting his uncle paddington who lived out that way , anyways he spots this human and turns towards him to investigate the smell his big old nose was picking up . The guy in the boat started screaming and shouting and threw his coat over something in his boat but not before Baloo caught a glimpse of his nephews skinned body , and that ladies and gentlemen was how mr human never got back to the safety of his anchored boat. Moral of the story...there are no better hunters than KARMA !!
for anyyone ascribing holy intervention in this instance to the survivor, i'd just like to say 'get a grip'. for sure having a higher power, whatever it may be, will help with survival, but props actually go to the incredible Alaskan Coast Guard. also, i'm no vegan but if the last recorded photos of the deceased are of celebrating the death of a bear, & trying to tow that weight by yourself on a kayak, then honestly, you reap what you sow. the risks are clear.
Wondering what the circumstances of his death were still, weird thing is he should of been in view the whole time, if the guy could see the boat moored up from where he was?! 🤔
Yes, he probably would be. The sad thing is that I don't know if either of them had ever eaten bear meat, but it's almost inedible, although I think this was more for a trophy which is horrible. A family friend brought us some bear meat when I was a kid and my Dad stewed it all day, but it was still so dry and tough.
@@mythicalmeanderings Hah... I think I'll just take your word on that as my Dad was an awesome cook and this meal was beyond awful. He told us we had to eat it and then ended up hating it himself.... so we got a lucky break there as none of us could eat it. He did it like a pot roast in the oven with veggies.
What you experienced on big storm is terrible but it's a way God use it for your Good.see you can drink water from the small whole where rain water drops. The boat drift away where the fisherman's notice it and report to coastguard and that's the way they found you. What a amazing story. PRAISE GOD!ALWAYS IN PRAYER FOR GOD HEARS AND SEE YOU.
So , this guy could have tied a few logs together and got back to the boat. What exactly happened here, did Garrett just drop over dead ??? Unanswered questions...🤔
The little 10 footer was riding low in the water. It would not take much movement for the little boat to take on water and go down. R.I.P FELLOW HUNTER.
Where did the partner go so suddenly, he had sight to the boat, and enough timber to collect it to a raft and get out to the damn boat, why is he just waiting for something to happen, glad he is not with us when hunting moose and bears in North Norway.
Combat Appreciation -- Seeing the demise of my companion on the river, my immediate concern would be to build a raft back to the boat. On the boat there are survival supplies. My efforts should immediately be focused on the raft , how may hours of daylight I have, and the vicinity of predators. I need to maintain a fire and dead wood fuel supply for warmth and to deter predators and to act as a light beacon should darkness fall earlier than anticipated. This would be the easiest survival strategy, rather than attempt the rigors of the interior. Time is of the essence. I need that dirigible raft and I need it fast. I would be worried about the river current which could sweep me past the boat and out to sea, but it's worth the risk.
As a life long boater & boat owner, and 35 year, member of the USCGA, I've heard many stories about people who fall off their boat and drown because they can't get back in. This likely happened to Garrett. [My guess is that he stood up in the dinghy, and attempted to launch a big hunk of meat, up & over the gunnel, but didn't have enough momentum and it came back at him, causing him to lose balance and fall in, pushing the dingy away, where it was pulled away in the current.] You can't be in denial that things can go wrong, and they do so quickly on the water. You've got to have a swim ladder, swim platform, rope ladder, or knotted rope, that can help you climb in, should you end up in the water. You only have a couple of mins before hypothermia renders your hands useless, even in warmer climates. May he Rest in Peace.
It beats me how come someone who has a rifle at his disposal, lots of branches to make a makeshift shelter, water and what not is whining like a 5 yeaor old who's got lost in the woods.
@@jeaniemarczniec7755 No judgement here, just pure common sense. Shame is on the healthy, well equipped man for not doing anything to save himself although he might have without much effort.

I guess Garreth's family believe that their son/brother would think more to take a loaded down boat with all his bear meat and leave his friend on shore with just 2 guns? Any hunter knows to keep your firearm with you at all times if possible. Leaving 1 little gun behind is not going to make much difference in the weight of the boat. It would have been better to leave 75 to 100lbs of the meat behind and maybe later go back and get it. This guy is putting the soul blame on the dead man :(.
@@MissX905 yeah I think it's all a bit fishy. And at one point he said he wanted to live so he could tell his family "the right story". I guess you could take that as him just wanting them to know what happened but I was intrigued why he phrased it like that.
No disrespect to the guy going through this, but if he was determined to stay on that tree, he should have at least got some branches to break the wind, and cut down on the rain. Pretty basic stuff.
Was thinking the exact same thing. The tree actually looked like it could be a cozy spot. I would have spent the time I had to collect branches and trees to try to enclose the area for better protection. I mean, he did have a ton of time on his hands and two guns to protect himself should he have an encounter with bears or wolves.
I am thinking why didn't he even try to swim to the boat before the boat vanished after the storm. He could have make a Mayday call over the radio on the boat.
Do you realize the temperature of the water in Alaska, 15 minutes tops to survive, if he would have tried to swim he would have never made it. Watch Coast Guard Alaska you may learn how it is done up there. Hypothermia would have set in and then it is all over.
I lived in Kodiak island for 2 years coming from the Caribbeanpuerto Rico never experience cold weather ,but as a kid took a shortcut to school as a 12 yr old infected whit sharks an barracudas.,I think the current an the cold water an the wheig of his clothe play a big part to the tragedy,😅😢

I would have designed and built a boat from random driftwood - no need for anything fancy - sealed it with some bitumen-tar I would have found somewhere (it's an oil-bearing location)...with some oars made of brush(I prefer spruce) and a couple of minutes practice I would have made it over to the Abundance in a jiffy...people aren't resourceful enough
I thought that also, but if he had a life jacket on he would have 15 mins of survival in that fridgid water. The boat was heavy with that meat anything could of happened when he made that turn.
If you are truly close to someone... and especially if it includes a spiritual connection, its not uncommon to know when someone dies. A Navy seal associate told me that while he was in Vietnam he knew when his father died back in the states. No one believed him. Just off a long patrol assignment on the Ho Chi Min trail...He left against orders and got back to the states just in time for the funeral. Such connections exist... for some people. [Because of the evidence there was no court marshal]
Wow that was a big bear 🐻 head. I'm glad they found Garrett s body. I'm sure they did an autopsy..no gunshot wounds or trauma. I think the JWs story holds water.
Every time I hear one of these stories, the weather will be fine while the people/person is ok. As soon as they get lost or injured, the weather turns deadly: Ton of rain, ton of snow, extreme temperatures etc. It’s like nature is TRYING to kill them or teach them a lesson. I really don’t feel like humans should be out there hunting etc. Weird🤔
You must not interfere with morher nature.... Jehovah plays second fiddle ..she comes first... they had no business killing that bear.... and mothwr nature nade.them realise that ... bragging about their kill ..that will never end well
I dont wanna make any assumptions here, like others, but was there no way for him to get to the Boat? Along the Coast, to get nearer, then swimm, guess he cant swimm..? I mean half a mile seems doable, or is it that deadly cold, thought it was summer?
If he is a hunter and knows how to make a fire, why didn't he hunt and kill an animal and cook it? Why is he talking about not wanting to eat raw meat? Weird!!
I'd of gone in to surviving mode, he has everything to survive and everything he needs to survive walking distance away. Go hunt some food, build a shelter, make a fire, it's full of fresh water rivers from the mountains,It's not like having no gun or figher starter, I don't buy his story in full., makes him sound heroic like all men want to be. Go watch lone survivor the film then watch the true story its nothing like the soldier made out, or the film
I would have went to higher ground and challenged the animals with firepower. I would have made kills for meat. Built a makeshift shelter. Made lots of fire and smoke when possible.
Hunter??? A Caveman has more know how than so called Modern Man. Even a tiny bird knows how to make a nest for shelter. The Boat was just sitting there until it drifted away. Even the Boat got away!!!

The water is very cold in Alaska within 15 mins hypothermia would have set in he would have not made it. God did not want him to take that route.
@@Bryan-Hensley on top of the currents?! Wut. The currents will still take you in a raft lol
So firstly the 800m would have been narrowed down to about 100m or 200m max as he would have walked down the side of the river to be perpendicular to the boat. That swim is doable in freezing water in less than 5min.
Wait for low tide and swim! Save your friend! Only reason not to is perhaps he never learned to swim.
Not everyone goes to boy scouts child you just proved his point and you probably tested the raft on a lake
I’d say his belief and prayers kept him alive.
The alaskan waters are too cold. You can die literally within 10 mins. His body was found. He drowned 🤦🏿♂️
His friend died because the water was so cold, you would not swim it.....
I felt the same way. Weird!
I could have made a raft out of old trees logs and branches. I'd say they got in a drunken fight.
Wow what a story I was lost in the woods only one was enough for me. Thank you coast guard. Thanks!!!

@@xonx209 that was my first thought. Killing a big beautiful bear like that is ludicrous to me. The bear 🐻 got his karma I guess.
He killed his friend because the guy wanted all the bear meat to himself 😂

It's still unclear how the other guy died. And since they were seasoned Alaskan hunters how come they didn't know that 300 lb of extra-weight (bear meat in their case) was too much for their boat? And a "seasoned Alaskan hunter" without the means to make a fire just doesn't sound right ...
He drowned trying to get on the boat because when he was getting on the boat with the beer meat it was to heavy and he slipped of the boat. That’s the best explanation, and then he drowned because the water is cold
@Neil Miranda ??? that makes no sense no fense
@Neil Miranda what
@Neil Miranda no
@Neil Miranda exactly. I gotta believe his friend could swim since he was a season boater or would have at minimum had his life vest on

I really didn't want to see the pictures of that slain bear.. There's just no need to kill anything that has a life to live unless you're hungry.
Adrian love and faith in God and his will power kept him alive. These true stories is both sad and amazing to watch. The human body is truly wonderful and fearfully made.

How did the friend actually die though after he left in the boat? 🤔
How indeed.. lol. Seriously though. How Adrian?
Some how the boat tipped with all that bear meat! And he drowned due to icy water and current

He can't swim to the boat? He would had frozen to death.
Bear Gryls woulda got to that boat. Just sayin.

God Is Great! 🙌
It's called Karma! Leave the animals alone!!
Both rifles belonged to the guide, what kind of hunter would go on a trip wthout his own rifle?
This goes against everything Bear Grills taught us about surviving. He also said that there were NO WINDS that day on the river.
I love this channel.
for anyyone ascribing holy intervention in this instance to the survivor, i'd just like to say 'get a grip'. for sure having a higher power, whatever it may be, will help with survival, but props actually go to the incredible Alaskan Coast Guard. also, i'm no vegan but if the last recorded photos of the deceased are of celebrating the death of a bear, & trying to tow that weight by yourself on a kayak, then honestly, you reap what you sow. the risks are clear.
Wondering what the circumstances of his death were still, weird thing is he should of been in view the whole time, if the guy could see the boat moored up from where he was?! 🤔

Sorry that you lost your best friend. May he rest in glory.

Exactly...somethings fishy for sure
I guess Garreth's family believe that their son/brother would think more to take a loaded down boat with all his bear meat and leave his friend on shore with just 2 guns? Any hunter knows to keep your firearm with you at all times if possible. Leaving 1 little gun behind is not going to make much difference in the weight of the boat. It would have been better to leave 75 to 100lbs of the meat behind and maybe later go back and get it. This guy is putting the soul blame on the dead man :(.
@@MissX905 l couldnt agree more.

The current probably and thats a half of a mile so he would most likely drown and he would get hypothermia
Do you realize the temperature of the water in Alaska, 15 minutes tops to survive, if he would have tried to swim he would have never made it. Watch Coast Guard Alaska you may learn how it is done up there. Hypothermia would have set in and then it is all over.
