Are you kidding? He is arrogant & rebellious, & disregarded his dad's wishes to do the birthday trip w/ a professional guide, & nearly killed him & made his mother a widow to do it HIS way. He's a D*CK!
A friend and n-eighbor of mine when she was 15 fell through the ice on the lake where we lived, while ice skating- she said, "always remember this and I learned it QUICKLY: if you fall through the ice, LOOK UP FOR THE DARK SPOT- THAT is the spot with NO ICE AND THAT IS THE WAY TO SWIM UP AND OUT!!!!! - do NOT look for light spots- that IS the ice." it scared the HELL out of her.... I NEVER FORGOT THAT.
A very counterintuitive thing and confirms the popular advice given to to those close to death "don't walk towards the light", "stay away from the light" lol holds true once again.
Really loved this ending. “They still go hiking together but they’ve never gone rafting again” that my folks is a lesson well learned. Congratulations on the beautiful survival story. Thank goodness you both survived.
these guys didnt do jack. they almost killed themselves, then got lucky the river spit them out. they built a fire using a torch. the son abandoned his dad and hiked 10 miles and built another fire with a torch.
It's all about genetics as well. I know plenty of older people who look and move like they are 1000 an they are only in their 50s and 60s and then I know folks in their 70s and 80s who can still walk and run long distances and lift weights, etc.
You know what, besides almost dying and everything that went wrong, it’s really cool that the dude just wanted to hang out w his dad and take him on a trip for his pop’s bday, just him and his dad bonding. That’s sweet. Not a lot of kids want to do that with or for their parents. As life progresses and you start to age, your kids suddenly become adults and you’re not prepared for it, then they leave you and forget about you bc they’re busy leading their own lives and you’re no longer a major part of their world. You’re reduced to this minor, nearly insignificant role. It’s lonely when you’re in your golden years. Hurts my soul thinking about it. Def not something I look forward to.
Oh damn!! 😣😣 my kids are now teenagers and I’m so close to them but see them growing up into their personalities and arrrgghh I hope I’m able to stay a large part of their lives!! I’m scared of what the next 8 years brings when my youngest turns 18 and my oldest is 22....yikes
Sorry but thats NOT how it is, you built a bind together and they reduced you to a "nearly insignificant role?" That is not success or "raising your kids properly" if my children do that we will not continue our relationship. Its a partnership for life, you should have told them that early on.
Everyone has their own life and goals. Many children live hours, countries or even continents away from their parents. They have jobs and their own busy family. As a uni student I would sometimes go a couple of weeks without contact from my family. My parents and I are immigrants so I very rarely see my grandparents for very short periods of time. It’s a relationship that you have for life but you aren’t going to be with each other all the time.
I often wonder if independently minded is smart minded. Play a game of scrabble or golf with your father if you want to spend time together......No radio or mobile VERY CLEVER ...
@Bob Well I bet you those two will think long & hard before ever venturing out & doing that shit again. Yeah, sure, I love adventure, but I value my life even more.
The son was not wise to take his elderly father on such adventure but I'm so happy they survived it. I was emotional watching this, especially towards the end when they felt so helpless and vulnerable. The actors are amazing you can see every emotion on their faces.
Agree. I watched this in disbelief - going early in the year with little heed to the ice they would likely encounter. Fortunately they were both brave and resilient enough to survive.
It always astounds me how little thought and effort these adventurers put into disaster/survival preparedness in these shows. It is so important to have some sort of emergency plan, a worse case scenario survival kit you can have on your person at the very least. Emergency gps beacon, some flares if you can, space blankets for warmth and signalling, a tin with hooks, fire starter, paracord bracelets, whatever you can keep on your person. I spent time in the Alaskan bush as a kid, we had to take a survival class and pass survival and swimming tests to graduate. It's no joke up there.
@@AndiAndrea There’s ALWAYS one of you idiots around being racist. I would think it would get tiring for you but I guess not. You must be such a victim.
When the pilot dropped these guys off, to begin their journey down the river, like he didn't know about the ice on the river. He might have said "you guys are crazy for wanting to go down the river in a raft, there is still icey spots"
I spotted this show about 12 years ago when nobody knew about it.Glad it’s finally being recognised.I just think they should make a few more seasons but at the same high level as the older seasons. This is one of my fav episodes.
" the men later learned their initial route was not on the flight path of any aircraft and if Blake had not tried to hike out, then his father almost certainly would have died" Sometimes it pays to have all the information before commenting about others perceived mistakes
@TheRealSwampOperator it doesn't matter. Blake sat on his ass for 5 days and he made it to the spot he ended up at in one day. Even if Neil and Blake decided to walk together it wouldn't have taken them more then 3 days. Also if they would have stayed put they could have built a better shelter, traps, fished etc. Neil gave his son both the lighter and knife and he didn't do anything with it except save himself with fire. Atleast let your dad keep the knife for bushcraft if that was supposed nto be his plan. It was just pure damn luck and a miracle they survived. They would have had better odds waiting a week together till someone noticed them missing or waited 2 weeks until the actual real rafters started coming in to do the guides. They would have been found if they stayed near the river.
As someone who's closer to his dad, this hit close to home. I'm very glad they both got out alive. I'm sure the son genuinely wanted to have a blast with his dad, but life had other plans. Bless em both!
@@vrfvfdcdvgtre2369 Its funny when people say this especially on the eps from before tech, or places with no cell towers, not the exact case here but, for all those people its going to be funny when they go somewhere with a phone thinking everything will be okay, then the phone doesnt work or battery dies, and they dont have a clue on what to do next because they depended on the phone.
There was a story in a magazine about a young man from the lower 48 who went to Alaska and became trapped on one side of a river, somehow, and then basically just starved to death.
But if they didn't live to tell about it, it's hard to think about their story.. I mean what if they had a blast and loved the events leading up to their death? Then we'd be thinking about their situation all wrong.
Love the relationship between father and son. I'm really glad they both survived. One thing I've learnt from this is never to give up because with hard work and determination you will succeed 😊.
To all the bad planners, the reckless, the naive, the unprepared, and the irresponsible ones, thank you from the bottom of our hearts. This show would not have been possible without you. The producers and the viewers.
Moral of story: Prepardness! Absolute survival items strapped to your persons @ all times including gun, duplicate gear spread among several bags, cell phone, SAT phone, Beacon Transponder, GPS unit, standard compass, maps, Float Plan conveyed to others, MRE's, Flare Gun & several flares, and...@ least 4x Pow-Pow's with plenty of ammo!!! Remington? Mossberg? Ruger? Oh...and "Common Sense!" And Cow Bell...I gotta have more Cow Bell!
No doubt! I am a firm believer in overkill when it comes to preparedness. When I set out nine years ago on a three week Western U.S. trek with my nephew I took so much stuff. Ended up using less than half but had the peace of mind that if anything happened we could survive several weeks if need be.
Who goes into Alaska without any means of contacting the outside world for help??? The younger guy thinks hes a cross between Ray Mears and a navy seal lol
@WonkaaVision Not if he had it tethered to him like a smart person would. I take a HAM radio and emergency antennae out with me and it's physically connected to me. It makes no sense for it to be anywhere else. It was indeed foolish for them to go out without any way to communicate. There's no excuse for it.
Virginia Solomon dude I completely agree.. I’m scrolling down trying to find this exact comment. Why the fuck would they go into the wilderness without any means of communication.. just soo dumb that I almost don’t feel bad for them
You mean like before c 1992 when cells phones came along? Some people like adventure, out there cells wouldn't work anyway. I don't think he should have taken a 65 year old with him tho.
This was the best show on tv back in the day! This is one of my favorite episodes, but they were all good! Thanks for posting great to watch them again.
Wow, that was intense. I'm from SE Alaska and we don't have as much tough terrain or huge game like the north. What an amazing story. If you ever travel here, make sure you get a guide.
This was such a great story on so many levels. Wow, even though I knew both had obviously survived, I was still in tears when the helicopter guy found Blake's dad lying face down on the ground. Great job recreating the story!!
What an amazing story of the depth of love between a father and son. I could mentally follow Blake along with his father, and then especially when he had to leave him to get help. I knew how I would have felt had I been forced into a decision like that. I think I would have gave my father one of the biggest hugs I ever gave him, and have to wipe the tears from my eyes as I departed and watched him as I walked away. The suspense of this story was incredible, and when you realize that it's something that really happened to a father and son, and not fiction it grips you. The look on his father's face when the helicopter pilot aroused him was wonderful and then when they finally reunited, wow, such an amazing story!
Unbelievable. What a relief! I know they were telling the story, alive and well, but man I could barely breathe the whole way through until rescue. Grateful for the simple things in life and all our loved ones.
@DinkleDigeroo obviously "will kill you" is incorrect. As both father and son survived with all but a lighter. And you better believe If I had access like this guy did to a river that I'd at least attempt to spear fish and not go "well some guy on the internet told me to forget it because I have "no prior training." and some other internet dude says " People with the right gear and skill could go weeks without catching a fish." all you people just make assumptions without knowing the full context. You’re all so quick to talk down on the son, thinking everything on this is precise or show the entire context. The son obviously wasn’t cautious in terms of having all the necessary equipment, but he obviously didnt want anything to happen to his father. If he never took the risk of going out he wouldn’t of been spotted by the plane, so atleast he took responsibility and went out looking for help. You think he was eager to leave and walk out in the wilderness between a bunch of predators and leave his dad alone? No. just how yall say he should’ve listened to his 65 year old dad, his dad is no dummy. If he went it was cause he wanted to. Im so sick of people who are actually serious and not trolling wanting to act like they know what kind of man the son is based off a show
Reading a case study about an Alaskan cow who got trapped in a swarm of mosquitoes and was exsanguinated, was quite enough to keep me far away from Alaska! So creepy!
I am always so inpressed with the acting on this show. Like, it feels very genuine and raw. I guess the fact that they seem to actually film the scenes ”on location” aids the actors in portraying real emotions.
I agree, this series was done really well and made me feel like I was there , imagine being in that situation and to be honest I don't think I would of survived
Those Bush Pilots don't get nearly the credit they deserve.. If y'all ever come across one, Buy 'em a beer.. It could very well be your life, that they save..🍻🍻
I feel bad for the father practically drug into something he didn't want by his son and nearly lost his life for it. How about letting the person whose birthday it is decide what they want to do and just do that instead of bogarting someone else's special day.
Listen, I'm a grown ass woman, if my son told me or asked me to make that trip with him I would have said hell no. There is no way I would have went on that trip, I don't care how much I love my son, even if we was an expert and a doctor. I would have said no and not gone. His father was old enough to say no. It's unfortunate that they both had to suffer, but he could have said no.
OMG, I haven't heard the word "bogarting" in forever. LOL, brought back memories. But yes, you're absolutely right. The Son was very self centered in that regard.
Thank heavens for that pilot. I have this habit of attaching everything to my belt or pockets, knives, fire starters, safety blanket, compass, anything of a survival nature. So if a backpack gets lost...it's all good. Of course prayer being paramount in any emergency situation. Amen? yes...Amen.
The outfitters that they booked this trip with should have asked about their experience of such a trip and then told them no, not at this time. The bush pilot knowing that they were going to be floating a raft should have scouted that section of river prior to their drop off.
I agree. I had a similar situation when I was a teenager in regard to experience and I'm much older now and still think the guy who rented us a canoe was a douche for not refusing to give us one. Two teens trying to camp in a swamp overnight was foolish and we honestly had no idea how foolish it was. We thought we had it all planned out but when you're a teen you simply don't have all the information because you just haven't been alive that long and it's not like we'd come from any kind of camping background but we really wanted to learn. The guy just laughed so he knew it was a dumb idea. The thing is, if he had said that and not rented to us, we wouldn't have put up a fuss, we would have just gone home. Sometimes you don't have to treat people like children but just explain the truth that they might not be aware of...
Wow were they both fortunate to have made it through their ordeal alive and intact. You can be prepared with the gear and the knowledge for a trip and survival if needed but there's never any guarantee that you can make it through the journey. Hat's off to both of them even though they broke some cardinal rules during an emergency and still managed to be okay. God was with them for that journey for sure
You know... This trip brought their family closer together than anything as trauma and trajedy often do. I wouldn't wish it on anyone but find it truly intriguing. We endure so much suffering in our lives and it's how we choose to suffer and find meaning in that suffering that brings true meaning to our lives.

@strangerdanger4167they obviously survived. They’re around to tell the story.
Yes, I think he did a fantastic job.

The last five minutes are emotional. Eventhough I knew what was going to happen, I was in tears. Glad they made it out okay.

It's really a miracle they survived considering how many times Blake's decisions almost caused their deaths.

Sometimes it pays to have all the information before commenting about others perceived mistakes
@@TheRealSwampOperator That would be nice. But most people are filled with shuddas and oughtas - only adds to the burden.
From that point on Blake's adventures should be limited to watching Sponge Bob @ Patrick from the couch, cool aide pop in spill proff sippy cup

Thank you.
