    Sorry to say but I don't know an experienced yachtsman that would go out on a yacht without knowing that yacht had one and that it was up to date with it's compliance.

    I've glanced at the comments, and not seen anyone have the same takes as me, on actions after the capsizing. Even before the second guy was convinced to go through the hatch, I was thinking that he needed to be sure to help pull the last guy through, once he was free of the water pressure through the hatch. But, he didn't, which was horrific, I thought as I was watching it. And then when they didn't see Roger appear (or hear him shouting upon escaping), how could they not dive back in to assist him? How could they think he'd escaped, when they couldn't on their own get through the hatch, and they don't hear him shouting? Especially, how could the two fellows who he'd 'rescued' not be compelled to at least attempt an assist. Dark and scary yes, but after a moment of gathering oneself, I'd have been beside myself with guilt doing nothing.
    We find out later, Steve had a small light. Yet, he would rather leave them to die in the cap sized vessel, than taking the relatively minor risk to assist them.
    Then, according to their own retelling, they showed no feeling about what was in fact the most likely outcome for Roger, until much later. Shocked. I've been in a white water river situation, where I'd got to shore after a capsize, but my boat mate was in terror, not able to pull himself up an almost vertical canyon wall. So, I got to him, ended up sliding in as I was too light to pull him out, but was able to calm him down, and show him how to push himself away to move further down stream.
    Then, Steve's stewardship continued to lack. They should have indeed back stroked (rather than swim) toward the oil platform that night, easier task than swimming, which would have helped keep their bodies warm. Instead he attempts after they are more tired, and have been in the scorching sun for hours, and swimming instead of back stroking.
    When they realized they werre burning in the sun, they were wearing shorts, that were basically useless; they could have taken their shorts and used them as hats.
    Other than having them tie themselve together, the only rational thinking that occurred was the Coast Guard checking current movements to figure out where they could have drifted. Had that smart thinking not occurred, one or more of the five may well have not made it.

      There is one thing they mentioned that made me think it may not have been possible to help Roger out. The reason they said they were stuck in there was because of the pressure of the water rushing into the room. Roger was able to help them out by physically pushing them through the portal. The only way to help Roger out would be to get back towards the portal and grab him and pull him through. But if you had to be pushed out of that room to begin with, you would not pull him out. The water would push you right back in. Also, keep in mind you still have to find your way out of the ship in the dark and reach the surface on one breath of air. It's noble to try to think of helping Roger out but I don't think there was anything they could have really done for him. RIP to a selfless hero who did what he could to save others in a horrible situation.

Had he even tested it before this race? It seems like it was in spite of him, not because of him, the boys lived through this. And he's got a big head now.

      An insightful comment; I thought of similar points and was also surprised how carefree the younger ones appeared to be. Not to detract from their achievements in their incredible survival but it seemed like Roger was very much an afterthought.. I love this series but surely the depiction cannot be accurate, no racer wears that type of life jackets anymore. They wear automatic inflatable jackets that have personal location beacons or at the least a man overboard beacon installed that means as soon as you fall overboard the life jacket inflates and the mob beacon is activated. Also racers are required to have automatic floating epirbs attached to their vessel. Must be different in US or an old story. Thank goodness they survived well except the hero of the story Roger may he rest in peace.

  • @JamesStreet-tp1vb
    @JamesStreet-tp1vb 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

    I have to wonder if the last man Rodger pushed through could have held back and waited outside and pulled Rodger through or, if Rodger could have waited for the boat to fill with water, then, when the water stopped flowing, made his way out? Also, it's impossible to swim with a life jacket on. I think i would have taken my life jacket off and tied it around my neck and just let it float above my chest and sidestroked towards the oil rig. Sidestroke using the least amount of energy possible. Not swimming all out, just gentle strokes, (bringing your palms up the side of your body then out and stroke towards your feet and not breaking the surface) and, every few minutes, check to see if I'm getting any closer. The fact that they stayed so close to it for so long tells you the current wasn't very strong. They should have been able to make it.

  • @jencapp-se9dq

    Incredible that before a really big sailing trip no one dove under the boat to make sure there were no cracks, holes, leaks. I check my car for fluid levels/leaks, turn signals, etc once a week as vehicle maintenance. If it’s your mode of transportation and your safety/life depends on it, it should be checked regularly. Especially before a big trip! Derp. How he missed such damage beneath the boat is insane!

      I thought the same, particularly in the light of the boat having been (apparently) in a collision prior. But, I didn't see details on that incident shown (might have skipped over it). It could be that it had been inspected since the incident with no indication of cracks. Suspicious though.

    • @jenna-a-gogo
      @jenna-a-gogo 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      This immediately caught my attention too. The skipper was aware of previous damage that had been repaired. Did he have the bottom of the boat thoroughly checked before embarking on a long distance race? If not, this negligence caused the death of a man.

    • @paulshell1729
      @paulshell1729 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      This boat had undergone substantial repairs to the bolt-on keel after previous damage, but modified with different backing plates that altered the stress distribution among other documented changes. Pushing it hard in rough conditions may have contributed to the catastrophic failure, the backing plates peeled open the bottom like a can of sardines. The hull was recovered and reinspected, this sinking is well understood.

    Screw them all for leaving a man behind without attempting to help. A bunch of cowards with no honor in them especially the old guy who told them to basically not go back since Roger was experienced enough to get himself out of that situation. That statement killed a man. None of them was in danger if they tried to reach the hatch and pull him out. What Roger and the young men should've done was to tie a rope to one of the guys' feet before sending him out. This way Roger can attach the rope to his arm and while exiting the hatch the can pull him out from outside.
    Anyhow, trying to honor Roger in the end is just cheap talk. Even one of the young men said the sacrifice Roger made made him wanna live life to the fullest. Really, that's what this is about? No, the experience you went through and getting close to death made you realize that but this has nothing to do with Roger's sacrifice. Sad really how this life is full of living selfish cowards and dead selfless heroes.
