      I got charged by a black bear when I was 14. It was early daylight hours and I didn't know what it was. It ran from 60 yards to 20 and I was sitting there squinting with my rifle pointed in a safe direction trying to get my dad to stop walking away. If I had been afraid of it and ran the thing wouldn't have stopped at 20 yards. If I had my sights on it, it would have regretted running towards me. On the bright side I carried a deer carcass down that same path the next day and it didn't try to steal it.

    I'm from and live in Alaska and I know exactly where Joe is talking about when his friend got charged and it is on Kodiak island. Tourist or people that do not know call those bears there grizzlies... But they are not grizzlies, those are Kodiak bears and they are the largest and most powerfull "brown bear" on the planet and the only place they live and can only be seen is on Kodiak Island, Alaska. Their front paws can get as wide as a mans chest with 4 inch claws. A grizzly is a brown bear with a Kodiak being a sub species. They have been isolated to Kodiak Island for about 10 to 12,000 years or so. I believe the largest Kodiak bear ever recorded there stood 12.5 feet tall and weighed 1,600 lbs. They are magnificent, majestic and terrifying to see.

    I have had two Grizz encounters. 2001, Northport, Wa. My gf and I were north of the Columbia River/Lake Roosevelt, elk hunting about a mile south of the canadian border.
    We took a break in a long, narrow meadow, leaned rifles against a tree. She was looking around and said "Oh look, a horse." I looked where she was pointing, saw a grizz ambling down through the aspens. Looked closer at the bear as I picked up my rifle, saw he was walking down a trail, a trail which meandered through the meadow, right past our tree; the same trail we came up into the meadow on. Told her "It's a grizz," while I tossed her her rifle. Never forget, she said "Well this fucking sucks!"
    The bear came out of the trees walked right down the meadow towards us, completely unaware as he was upwind and about 70 yards at that point. I told her to get a rest on the tree with her 7mm Rem Mag, wait til I fired, then keep shooting til the grizz stopped moving.
    I stepped out from the tree into plain sight, my 7mm Rem Mag ready, yelled at the bear once. I told her if he didn't stop there, we were going to shoot. The grizz stood up on his hind legs, could hear him sniffing. I yelled again, he turned and busted brush through the trees back the way he came to the north. I paced off where he stopped and stood up, about 29 yards. Thankfully, I didn't have to fire a warning shot, or shoot the bear. No harm no foul.
    Second time was Alaska, 2015, with my then 3 year old son. We were visiting family in Fairbanks, drove borth of town and went for a hike. Had a Glock 20 10mm on me, and a Mossberg 590 12 gauge with slugs.
    My son was running ahead of me about ten feet towards a creek, when I heard a crashing in the brush. Thought it was a moose, so I grabbed my son and pulled him backwards. A grizz popped out of the brush, jumped the trail about 50 feet away, from our left to right, and was gone as soon as we saw him or her, cashing away through the willows. We went our happy asses back to my uncle's truck, and i was sweating like a knight in a convent until we cleared that brush.
    Black bears, 3 encounters, only once needed to spray one with bear spray.
    My advice as a lifelong hunter? Practice getting your weapons into action, fast and accurately. Whether it be bear spray, a handgun, or a long gun, if you can't get it into action fast, you will be either lucky or a statistic. The only people who stand there like a deer in the headlights when a bear takes them by surprise, is the people who have never prepared. Be prepared, have a plan, practice your plan if you are going to be in bear country.

    Bears are an insane specimen of nature, I always thought they were like the most badass, alpha predator around. Then one evening I watched a documentary on Russia. They got to explain about the fauna and such and they were showing off their brown bears and we're comparing them to the US population. Then they showed what was left of a bear, a very large bear; first thing I asked myself was how large and alpha was the bear that did this, and I questioned if they were a cannibal species - turns out it was a Siberian tiger that hunted, killed and consumed that bear. Felines are on a different level with their stealth and athleticism.

    • @brandonfoley7519
      @brandonfoley7519 3 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      That is insane, I didn't believe it was possible
      But apparently tigers will ambush them
      But in a face to face confrontation the tiger will lose
      These seem like animals that would normally avoid each other
      Considering how dangerous they both are
      Animals just want to survive, so will go after high reward low risk meals
      Which youd think is us
      But I guess animals that eat a human get killed off

      The craziest thing about that is they say that a tiger will be up a tree and make mock bear sounds to lure them in and jump on their back, now that being said, if it’s a grizzly and a tiger and the bear isn’t taken by surprise the grizzly wins every single time

      121bham There are several reasons to carry with a round in the chamber. The time it takes to rack the slide could make a difference and if you are drawing you need the gun NOW. Under stress there is always a chance of making mistakes and failing to chamber a round/inducing a malfunction. Also, it takes two hands to reliably rack a slide, and you may be in a situation where one of your hands is not free when being attacked.

    I have a true story about what to do if you stumble upon a mother black bear and her cub.
    I was walking through the forest in Florida and I saw something in a tree moving. At first I thought it was a monkey, but then I remembered that I don't think they have those in Florida. I realized I was looking at a bear cub and first thought was "where is the mother?" I looked down at the bottom of the tree and there she was. She had treed her cub and was on the ground waiting for me.
    She stood up on her hind legs and hissed like a cat at me. I was with-in 25 yards. No way to escape if she attacked, because they are very fast and run over smaller trees that would make human fall down.
    I believed she was trying to tell me to get out of that area as fast as possible or she would kill me. I had heard that you should not sprint away, because they may chase you. I didn't get that vide from her. She wanted me out of there right now. I just turned and did my best Last of the Mohecans dash through the forest. I fell over downed trees several times. I looked behind me and she was not coming. I kept running out of respect for her size, power and speed and she never came after me. It was probably the most scared I have ever been, because she had every single advantage over me that mattered in the forest. I'm just lucky I read her right and she wasn't more aggressive.

      For your own sake...
      While I do travel whenever I get the chance, I've spent a MAJORITY of my life in bear-country, and I've seen PLENTY of bears. I haven't even bothered to count in more than a decade.
      When you find yourself "stumbling on" a bear in a clearing... with any space at all... The best FIRST thing to do is STOP.
      Second, STUDY... The bear is either going to be acting aggressive or not. Aggressive means TAKING GROUND... that's "approaching you" specifically.
      Mostly, they're not aggressive toward humans. Mostly, they're defensive, and POSTURING (remember how the mother bear stood up and hissed and made noise?)
      You WERE correct (Mike), that she didn't intend to eat you. She just wanted you gone, no longer threatening...
      BUT here's the only real problem. You RAN away. DO NOT ACT LIKE PREY.
      Weirdly, this is the same rule with big cats. (I've seen a few of those over the years too)...
      Just back away, or sidle away. Keep your head on a swivel, and PAY ATTENTION, not just to the bear, but your surroundings. More people get killed by sprinting blind into a tree, breaking a leg on roots or rocks, falling off a damn cliff, or stampeding themselves into a river than actually get killed by the bear that scared them in the first place... It's called "Panic Mode" and you can't let that rule your head.
      What's the point of being the SMARTEST damn predator on top of the food chain the world over... When the MOMENT you need all those smarts worst, you don't have them in your control to do a damn thing??? (think about that)
      Believe me, I know how hard it is, bush-whacking your way through a viney nasty thrash of thorns and crap only to notice you're just about to step on a grizzly's FOOT... The stink of its breath inundating your very conscious mind as spittle streaks your cheeks and shirt. You can't even think about the booney-hat... You forget all about the 44 in your holster. You're deaf, and all you can see in that moment is brown ruffly fur. You even drop the machete in your hand before your ears are ringing from that god-awful thing.
      AND... I just backstepped, "No bear." As firmly as I could muster (think Barney Fife trying not to pass right the F*** out) and I glanced around to the next clean ground, and stepped there. "It's okay... No bear.... be cool." AND another and another step.
      In my case, that day, I was about four or five yards back off the mother bear, when I saw the two cubs, struggling their way up the tree. AND admittedly, that was very likely the LUCKIEST damn day of my entire 40-odd year existence. BUT she was a Montana Behemoth, and I simply wasn't on the menu that day. I could hear her and the cubs leaving out more than see them go, and after about twenty minutes some 30 or 40 yards off, I returned and retrieved the machete I'd dropped. It's probably the most fearful, or perhaps, I'd just wrote myself off... It was certainly as close to scared to death as I've ever been.
      DO NOT ACT LIKE PREY... Scurrying and scrambling around, falling all over yourself, and flailing uselessly like a prey animal is EXACTLY the kind of activity that ATTRACTS a predator. Nature's a cruel, heartless b***h, and even the smart predators know that. They don't take "unusual" very well either. SO acting confident and moving deliberately will send them the signal that YOU know what you're doing there... even if you don't really. They don't tend to fight battles they're not confident in winning... AND even the Bear or Lion will recognize that someone strolling right up like he knows he's the boss... probably IS the boss. (lolz) It's enough to keep them from taking you straight away, and every second bought is a minute earned. ;o)

    • @MikeBrown-go1pc
      @MikeBrown-go1pc 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @ gnarth I also heard you are supposed to "act bigger" like puff up or extend your arms. That went through my head too, but I was convinced it wanted me gone fast. Trying to run is useless in the forest from a bear and I did look like prey I'm sure. I don't think she was hungry. It was raining that day and I don't think she heard me as far away as we would have liked or they may have just moved off in another direction and I may have never saw them. It was a sight though. Kind of like a really hairy 400lb man in size, but way faster and more powerful. Not to mention the claws and teeth.
      The acting like a boss thing makes sense, but she was ready to go toe to toe with a boss over that cub. I didn't want to challenge her bossness at all.

    • @gnarthdarkanen7464
      @gnarthdarkanen7464 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@MikeBrown-go1pc Yeah, I've heard that too... In certain cases, it is viable, but you have to have your wits about you...
      In Africa there are a LOT of wild dogs... They're not exactly the hyenas or wolves or what have you... SO just dogs, not unlike what you're probably picturing in your mind at the word... just truly wild, not even feral (like used to people at all) just wild...
      With predators about that size, it can make sense that "buffing up" or whatever to look bigger (if possible) will help your situation...
      It can even be helpful with certain encounters with the likes of bobcat, wolves, or coyotes (slightly more likely in the U.S. than truly wild dogs)... BUT we do have a fair feral dog population from spot to spot (at least around here)... SO it's worth note.
      BUT with a BEAR... some 400-800 POUNDS of spring-steel, rawhide, piss, hate, and razor-blades???
      You can waste your breath if you like, but I'm going to stick in the "doubtful" category on that one... The "routine" of motions of buffing up and acting like you're bigger might buy you a few extra seconds, but it's more likely to only work when the bear didn't want a "piece of your ass" in the first place... like your original story. (or mine, if I'm honest)
      Acting "bosslike" isn't just about flaunting your control over others. It's handling things in stride... Think the way Andy always handles crisis situations (for what they're worth) in "The Andy Griffith Show"... I know, it's outdated, and a lot of people don't care for the simplistic plots and lack of depth in the comedy, but that's part of what makes it infinitely easier to "pick apart" for useful tips. Andy's best work is simply "firm" while Barney is always "high energy" and "bullying" (well, he tries)... BUT the cornerstone of Fife's profile (as a character) is that he's inherently a coward. While Andy is inherently courageous.
      When "shit hits the fan" you don't get a whole lot of time to debate best points, or figure anything out. SO it's highly important to PAY CAREFUL ATTENTION to your surroundings "in the bush" at all times. Admittedly, there's only so much to human attention, but more of the animal attack victims I've seen in the worst shape for the wear are the ones with headphones and toys... stuff that distracts from where you are, what you should be doing, and whatever's around you.
      It's a case of "forest for the trees"... SO you can't depend on what you can see out here. You listen and smell... and pay attention to stuff being "out of place" or "off putting"... It might be nothing. Instincts have to get refined to become skills, but if every nerve and fiber in your being is screaming at you (for no discernible reason) that you really want to go back... you might well want to listen. You do have real instincts, and they're not evolved into you for nothing. You just can't go blind-running around and screaming and waving your hands foolishly for letting your emotional state take over control. Emotions are TERRIBLE pilots. ;o)
