Thank you very much for sharing. I am a comeback player myself, and I am still in the process of rebuilding. In the first 4-5months of trying to recover my former playing and strength, I felt extremely frustrated. I tried some online sources too.( Including TH-cam of course) Then I suddenly realized that I have to seek for the good vibration and everything all over again. And I made much more progress in one month then before. Listening to your great playing, I would never know you are a comeback player, not if you say. Again thank you for your sharing and encouragement.

Thank you for your very kind words sir. Yeah I hear you... just a little more time please, I can get this. I only hope my ramblings help. I know that there are times my videos might get too “real”. It is this kind of honesty that I think is absolutely necessary for us to confront as players. In every video I present are things I expect and tell myself. My advice is the result of my failed attempts and my warning to help others avoid my past! Thanks again Sir, Best, Jon

Agree. I came back after 20 years. Of course, I'm using the same trumpet as back then, but I basically decided "I'm probably starting from zero" and have taken that approach. I'm using a beginner book and setting short term goals, but have also set some long term goals and am already working on those things(prep work, like sequencing the piano parts for the accompaniment for solo pieces, learning new sequencing software). It's still fun if you have the right mindset. I'm re-learning and it's fun again!! No timeline and no deadlines and no pressure. I'm on my own terms and I'm not in any hurry! I do this for me.

I am coming back after 21 years. I played full time for about 20 years prior to that. I find what you are offereing here to be pretty much dead on target for my experience in working on coming back for about 2 months now. Thank you!! It's going to be a long road, however, I feel I'm lucky to have the chance to rebuild my playing from the ground up and just enjoy the ride back, whatever form that takes.

Thanks so much for these words. I sincerely am taking what you are saying to heart. I played as a youngster on a 1937 instrument and really got little instruction but sounded pretty good but we never did high register stuff.
Now I’m an old guy retired and listen to Alison Balsom or Chris Botti and think man I love the trumpet. I search for the trumpet in plays or in the background .
I have a lifetime of maturity rather than an 8th grader blowing on a horn. I want to make it sing again. I know my lips are old and not the same. But now I have passion and desire.
I hired a graduate student in music to be my master and help me get started.
I bought a new trumpet, my fathers 1937 Conn I gave to my 46 year old son.
Your advice seems like my epiphany.
Take it slow and build quality. I’ll give myself a year or two before I get into the high register.

I had a stroke . I sold my guitar and getting back into Trumpet. I’m 68 years old and I haven’t played in 40 years. I played a 1959 Bach Stradivarius. I sold it to a music teacher two years ago. I’m waiting on a Getz 700s. I will take it slow. No hurry. I have survived a double lung transplants and four strokes. Play to enjoy. I want to play some light jazz. Thank you. I’m retired . I bought a nice mute to save my wife’s sanity .

You're a beautiful, beautiful person dude. Your generosity comes through you like water. You hit ALL the important points and then some. Thank you for sharing all of this. I'm and have always been a musician, now a pianist-composer, but I was a professional trumpet player...40 years ago. I always loved the trumpet but I abandoned it in my late 20's. Now I'm back. I have all this experience... It doesn't matter. I have to start from cero. I am a different person of course! So true and so simple, yet I needed to hear it from you as a crystalized concept to truly understand it. GREAT videos. Than you!

You clever man. I've been struggling to play soprano cornet (my usual instrument) since being diagnosed with Parkinsons tremor in my hands and jaw. Also have trigeminal neuralgia and Asthma. Close to giving up but seeing your video made me think about how to get around all these "problems ". I'll never play like I used to but now I am finding a different approach to all aspects of my playing which helps me. I am actually starting to enjoy myself again by not expecting too much but happy with what I can occasionally achieve. Thanks for stating such obvious facts which I had forgotten over the years (I'm 63). I hope you inspire many more people like you have me. Kind regards, Dale

I've never heard wiser words in my whole life!.
I was a principal cornet player aged 16 of a very good brass band and went on to be a top soprano player in a championship band winning many contests🎺🎺
Unfortunately at aged about 39 when I was breaking up a fight(Denmark) I took a full blind punch to my mouth resulting in a 10 stitch wound right across my bottom lip I could see my teeth through the hole in my bottom lip!!!.
I was gutted to think I would never be able to play again and left it for about 15 long years BUT I decided to try and get a G on a Flugal horn I purchased on line and just about managed it!.
I kept going slowly slowly and reinvented a new embouchure now with a lot of slow low tones I'm enjoying playing again with some Beatles play along cd,s great fun 🎺🎺you are welcome to listen it's just for fun 😂🎺

    Hi Kids,
Thanks, Jon I appreciate the video. After watching your video... I realized that I am not the same person anymore. You said that we need to focus on music and sound production. I have seen a lot of people say that such as Vizzutti, Sandoval, and others.
I decided to just pull out my Clarke elementary studies and do the majority of my work from there. I will dedicate a little bit of time to my range but not so much. As I practice my main focus would be the beauty of the music I produce. That is what ultimately matters and our end goal.

    • @Rufftips
      @Rufftips  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

asmcriminaL Thank you for having me think about doing that video. What a great topic to explore. Sound is huge, if you have a beautiful sound people want to hear you play. One of my favorite trumpet players is Ramon Flores. His sound is something I will never obtain. It is so big and gorgeous. The Red book nice choice. As you develop expand what you do into the upper register maintaining that great approach of getting a good sound. When you set your approach to playing driven by the sound you are getting then you can approach range studies in a more musical way. This helps us play music up there. One of the problems I encountered when I was young was doing all the exercises and being able to play the notes. Then I would play music and fail in the upper register and wonder why. It was because I was practicing In a non-musical way that didn’t lend it self to being successful while playing music. As you grow and become better/comfortable expand or challenge yourself and you will continue to grow. Lay that foundation and you will find playing more rewarding and growth inevitable.
      Best, Jon

Watching this video, reading through the comments , making a comment or two along the way and pausing and practicing as I went ( rest as much as you practice ) I was planning on pointing out what wonderful opportunity is available to learn from the best of the best on TH-cam but that I didn't feel it appropriate to name names. Then at the end of your discussion you addressed that very issue and tossed out a few names for good measure, -------- my top picks !!!!!! save two one of which is that cat goes by the name of Jon handing out right on Rufftips in summary.

Thanks so much for the videos. I’m coming back 20 years after being a pretty middling highschool player. I still have limited range but already kind of more than in highschool. What’s really suffered though is my longevity/stamina. If I try to play for a couple hours I lose the “seal” and air shoots out the sides of my mouthpiece. Any suggestions besides longtones for this?
The first sign of breakdown I usually notice is that the middle, meaty center-part of top lip starts “getting in the way”-first giving extra blatty buzz then giving me airball-starts on notes. After that it’s only a while before I lose the seal and can’t focus air into the horn. This may not be possible to trouble shoot in a youtube comment, but just thought I'd try. Thank you!!!

    • @Rufftips

Martin Fierro Several shorter sessions throughout the day is what I would recommend. If this is not practical then during the two hour block 20 minutes on with rests 10 minutes off no playing. 20 minutes on with arrests 10 minutes off no playing. 15 minutes on with rests 10 minutes off the playing. 15 minutes on with rests 10 minutes off no playing. 10 more minutes on with rests. wants this routine becomes standard when you can extend the playing portion further out. I think realistically the ultimate goal is 50 minutes on 15 min off and then another 50 minutes. I would take my time with this. One year for now if you’ve reach this goal I think this is a huge win. Best, Jon

Thanks Jon for the video, hey John when you had to "re learn" the trumpet, how long did it take you to get back to where you wanted to be again. I'm just kinda curious, Im not sure if I would be considered a comeback player but I took just over a year from playing from playing in high school, and I've been back at it for 8 months now and I really feel like im better than I ever was in high school, but at the same time im not where I want to be yet, but I am excited to see what my playing will be like in a few years from now, thanks for all the videos Jon, you have helped me a lot!

Ryan Drone Good question, I actually talked about that on another version I did of this video and forgot to put it in this version. It took me 2 1/2 years to get to where I felt I had a new normal. I also needed scar tissue in my lip removed by a plastic surgeon along the way. So I had to reset and start over at about a year and a half in. This restart was much easier because my lip functioned better. Best, Jon

Exaggerated up wind position that was holding back my upper register, my high school instructor who was an accomplished trumpet player ( Mel Shelton ) wisely advised that regardless if I made the change or quit and tried to come back later I was looking at 2 months of long tones as the first step back.
At the time it seems so daunting that I gave it up for decades and when I picked it up again a few months back I was expecting months of drudgery blowing long tones only to discover that it wasn't drudgery at all in fact those first few weeks of concentrating on Long tones and watching TH-cam videos from people like Jon getting your embouchure right getting your breathing right getting your mindset right turned out to be a wonderful engaging experience to the effect that no day is complete until I have satisfied my appetite 4 long tones lovey lovey long tones.

Jason Gordan I know the concept and understand the mechanics of circular breathing. Unfortunately I don’t have a great command of this. It is not something I worked on in depth. I suppose I can work on this a bit and see if I can put together a decent demonstration of being able to do a circular breathing process while holding a note. Those that really know how to do this can play a string of notes while they do it. I will see what I can put together.
