  • In this video I examine ways to optimize our practice session by setting goals like; being relaxed, getting a good sound, striving for excellence, being self aware and self assessing. I discuss knowing when we are making mistakes and the advantages of correcting these issues. I discuss the reality that how we are playing is more important than what we are playing.

This is just what I needed. Over the past week, I feel like I’ve felt like I could just barely play. Every time I picked up the horn I was frustrated. The weird thing is, the previous week I was playing great, so I didn’t know what was going on. Watching this video has made me realize that I haven’t been focused at all when I have been practicing, and I’ve been playing random things, hoping that I got back to where I was before. Hopefully I can get back to where I was and go beyond soon.

I have started audio recording practice sessions so that I can assess all of these aspects of my playing. Then I rest as much as I played while listening and figure out how to improve. It also gives me a boost when something that I play sounds great and I can listen back to that and model it.

Hey Jon, was wondering if you could do a video on learning to keep your chin flat. My tutor keeps telling me that when I go above a A above the staff of low f# my chin scrunched and balls up. End would love a video where you explain how to learn how to fix that. Love your videos.
