Another good one bro! The app I like to use for a drone is called "Tonal Energy". It is really 5 in 1 in that it creates pitch, a tuner, a drone, a metronome, and a recorder. Another one I use is "Tiny Piano". It is a virtual piano that I use to get pitch and chords.

What is your opinion on using a practice mute to avoid clash with the neighbors? And practicing with it all the time. Some say it's bad for the progress, some say just pull out the tuning slide a little bit then it's OK.

Mertol Göksoy Anytime USA practice being put in some earplugs. The foam ones work well. This is going to create a lot of sound in your head and keep you from over blowing. I would practice in short bursts and not try and put in full sessions like you might if you’re playing open horn. There is far greater back pressure and this can have a negative affect over time. I would play shorter sessions and I wouldn’t try and play all the way up to the top of my register. I would remain a third below what I usually play open horn. You can totally mess up your chops by playing a practice mute all the time. Find some other options to be able to play open horn every other day

Hi Jon, I did some lip buzzing, and i saw my under lip is sliding under my upper lip as i go higher, and i try to fix it for a week now but i dont succeed to do it, you have some advice maybe?

ze - phyr actually some of that motion might not be that bad. If it’s extremely pronounced yes it is a problem. I would be careful of doing lip buzzing. An excellent approach to how to develop your embouchure through free buzzing or lip buzzing it’s very delicate. I would only use lip buzzing at the very beginning Of my playing session as a warm-up. I would not do more than five minutes of that at any given time. I would work on my upper register on the horn.

Sorry.......Claude Gordon was right about all this and he actually collected these devices he called "boon doggles". Because the resistance is so different between a mouthpiece alone and it being in the horn, I'm gonna call it detrimental because of the airflow factor. Buzzing a mouthpiece throws off the tongue/air coordination of playing on the horn. Resistance(mouthpiece plus horn and gap too) regulates air column which regulates tongue level which the air column hits the embouchure in a certain fashion. Lip cells in the lips buzz in a certain way according to the air column. Keep changing up the air column between mouthpiece and horn and those two fight each other for dominance. So....why warm up on a false air column with the mouthpiece alone. It's already been determined that even slight change in gap affects playing, why throw a monkey wrench into the machine by buzzing a mouthpiece?

did ur trumpet-playing improve ur free-buzzing, or did the free-buzzing improve ur trompet-playing. looks like u are an excellent buzzer, but what was first, the excellent buzzing, or the excellent playing?

seifen ständer this is simply an exploration into different types of buzzing that players might use or explore to discover aspects of how the playing process works. What you are asking is the exact argument I do not want to have. It is not my position to advocate for any of these buzzing techniques but simply present their existence. The purpose of any of these techniques is to strengthen aspects of playing. If they work and provide results then they are of value to the player. If they do not provide any results or are detrimental in any way they are of no value. Any exercise including buzzing techniques must be done with discipline and proper approach. If there is no guidance as to how to approach any exercise the player is left to try to figure out how to achieve the end result. There is not a lot information about how to apply buzzing techniques. There is also not a great deal of information about what they are meant to accomplish. This is why I simply present this video as an introduction to them. Anybody interested in applying one of these techniques should seek out as much information about the technique itself before adding it to their study list. I am a big advocate of playing different things and using different skills or techniques and applying them to different exercises. In this way we are “cross training” as trumpet players, developing different skills in preparation for what may be required of us. If buzzing techniques are of value then I see no reason why they should not be a part of the overall training process. If they are not of value then no need to use them. This is a conclusion that each player should make for themselves. Best, Jon

@@Rufftips hi jon! thank you very much for your answer! maybe i was misunderstood. i neither are in favor for buzzing nor in favor for not buzzing! i am an absolute beginner on the trumpet, its impossible for me to judge anything! i just noticed, that obviously you are a good buzzer, so i asked myself, if buzzing did help you, personnaly you, improving your playing. so it was really meant as a serious question, if you have the feeling that buzzing helped you, or if you think that your abilities concerning buzzing came with practicing and playing the trumpet.
at the moment i am trying many things, so i am very thankful for this video, which defenitely is the most detailed one about buzzing i have seen here on youtube, and today i was already practicing the things you are showing in the video - and for the moment i think it helps!
i try to learn the trumpet by watching videos on youtube. so far i was watching bryan davis' and paul mayes' videos. both of them i found very helpful. and now, since i found your videos, i will watch them as well, i find them very helpful as well!
so thank you again for your answer and your videos! all the best, gerd

seifen ständer This is a bit of a complicated subject. It should not be but it is. I think learning to play the instrument itself in the beginning is the best practice. There is a lot to understand about how this works and I think there’s no need to confuse things by doing a bunch of buzzing exercises. Once you’ve been playing for a while and have developed a foundation of how you approach the instrument then things like buzzing on the mouthpiece, using a buzzing device, free buzzing and Leadpipe buzzing can be added. I would not concentrate on buzzing in the first year or two of playing. Good luck to you with your new process of learning. Best, Jon
