    OK, as a kid (some 30-odd years ago) a friend had a He-Man action figure called Webstor. This figure had a grapple on a string connected to a backpack at the top, the bottom of the backpack had another string and a plastic loop.
    I was bloody obsessed to know how *pulling* a string made the figure rise up the string.
    That's been bugging me for 3 decades!

    You've done a lot of interesting mechanisms, this is a really good one! 😊👍
    Please check out the Rolamite Linear Actuator. Supposedly this is a zero (very low) friction and zero (very low) backlash actuator.
    I would love to see what you come up with.
    It would also work with curve of constant width bodies, which you've already covered.

    Now add a mainspring for tension.
    I vaguely recall seeing a similar toy as a child in the early 1980s (at the Perth Royal Show, I think). That one had a small, but heavy-ish ball with a fuzzy worm/dragon hanging off it & had plastic loops at each end or the threads. I had completely forgotten that time, thankyou.

    2:50 mathematical solution: for some ratio of x:1 pulleys (x is bigger than 1), the 1 pulley should move right by an amount p. the right string shortens by p, therefore the left string gets longer by xp. The total motion of the left point of the string is therefore xp-p. Since the left point is moving by some distance d, we can solve for the amount p = d/(x-1). since x=2 in your case, the distances are equal

    This becomes much more intuitive when you realize that a pulley doesn't have to rotate about its center/axis. If you consider the connection point of the two strings, you can easily imagine a point right between them, and see that both strings are applying a clockwise torque on the pulley.

    Did you know you can get "invisible" sewing thread? It's maybe a bit too stretchy for this but it's got to be worth a go. The thread's really useful if you don't want to keep a wide range of colours for fixing tears and the like in clothes (it's a sort of transparent plastic IIRC). If it worked in this it would make it more like "magic"!

    The trick works because it's designed to make people think it's a single piece of string, not two pieces wound round a pulley system.

    Just surfed in, Kevlar thread wors well and if you attach a ring or similar to each end of the string it will improve the rapid presentation and can be used as a misdirect.

    From a physics prospective we have the tension of the string equal at both ends, so that the system’s resulting force is 0, but the angular momentum of the forces on the pulley is what is not 0, having 2 different radius, assuming a reduction of 1:3, the inner one is 1/3 the other, and since the momentum is directly proportional to the radius this difference propagates to it, and the resulting addictions of momentums is not 0, but dividing it by the moment of inertia gives us the angular acceleration of the pulley itself along the string, multiply the angular acceleration by the highest radius and here is your tangent acceleration along the string!

      @@reignandbongao9497 it should work either way but I've never tried it myself. My printer has had a wobbly extruder drive gear on one of the extruders since I bought it. (The corrona virus killed my plans to fix my printer any time soon.)

    This is used in some roped ferrys, depending on situation they are in, this lets you pull a ferry away from you when you are downstream without doing a full loop of rope.

    It will move up because as you pull the string on the larger pully the one on the smaller one is unwinding more slowly than the larger one.

    The smaller pulley will unwind always less than the bigger pulley, so since we want to increase the length of the string, the direction of the movement of the pulley will be towards the right, it'll make the bigger pulley unwind and the smaller pulley wind, increasing the length of the cord.

    This mechanism can also work in reverse i.e. by moving the sphere you pull the ends of the strings together. The force you can generate depends on the difference in the size of the two pulleys. The closer in diameter they are, the larger the force (theoretically infinite) and just using two pulleys rather than several like on Destin's model. The caveat being you can only move the ends of the string a small distance; up until the pulley reaches the ends of the strings.

    same force on both pulleys, but the string on the larger pulley exerts more torque (longer lever) than the string on the smaller pulley so the axle turns in the direction of the string pulling down and by that the thing rolls up.

    The small pulley winds and unwinds twice as fast as the large one. The size ratio of the big pulley to the small pulley means that the ball can climb with less resistance. since the added amount of rope outside of the ball remains roughly the same there is an illusion that the ball has climbed the rope.

    The other day, I watched a lot of videos on how to splice filament (eg. when a spool runs out and you have to pause printing).
    -I expected to find a real good way, but none of the videos I saw were really appealing.
    In other words, the methods either took a bunch of retries, were too time-consuming or simply required a bunch of bulky tools.
    Which method do you use yourself ?

    I wonder if a "rubber plug" would introduce enough friction to keep the string from coming off of the pulley. Make it very close to where the string meets the pulley, I would think, might be the best place.

    I think the pulley will move to the right, because when you pull on it you apply a force of X, but it’s direction is flipped and it’s magnitude multiplied by 2 in the pulley, so the net force is to the right.

    If you insert some small metal tubes in the holes where the string goes through, you vil prevent the string from cutting into the plastic.

    I take it you never saw the Thingiverse project "String climbing rocket and UFO" - this design was based on a climbing monkey toy from 1895! I had seen this before you made this video but hadn't tried to print one yet.

    I think as the large puley will need twice length to move up in comparison to the small puley, the system of puleys will move towards the fixed end. Maybe not.

    I'd limit the inner part to 45° overhang and deviate from a sphere to a sphere capped wirh truncated cones. No need for printing these extra shell.

    It will move or pull the larger pulley down but wind up the string on the smaller pulley moving in up

    You could probably add some Perler beads to your string end loops to make sure the ball doesn't run off the end of the string. It might be a good idea if your house has young kids in it who like to pull things apart and misplace the pieces.

    What if you make this an elevator?
    Edit: the generator could be put at the bottom and the weight of the lift is supported by the ceiling instead. The strings at both the top and the bottom can also help stabilising the elevator so you wouldn't need an elevator shaft anymore and the whole thing can "levitate" in the air maybe :)

    Cool project Angus! You got me intrigued so I modeled one up tweaking the design a little and after a couple prints got one working. It works really well operating up/down etc. as long as it's operated slow and smooth otherwise I run into the de-spooling issue. Wondering if you were able to resolve that problem with your design. Would make a great toy for my grandson if not for that.

    Multiple pulleys with coil springs in them to make it change direction a couple times as you pull it

    I think you could solve some of the problems by having the rolls mounted vertically.
