    Not a solar cell but a thermocouple, will generate a very low voltage when heated. Voltage is proportional to temperature. Will not run anything as both voltage and current are very small, but yes it will work. Most unlike metals will generate a voltage across the metal juction when heated.

    If you'll notice, he has the Multi-meter set on the millivolt setting which you can get readings from metal plates, chicken wire fences, a short length of wire about 10 feet long, your automobile, etc. (all metal must be ungrounded). You can actually get more voltage by connecting your positive lead of your multimeter through a rectifier diode from a suspended piece of metal such as a wire, and the negative lead to an earth ground such as a pipe. You are actually harvesting RF, ground waves, and other electromagnetic energy waves, and then rectifying the energy into direct current electricity via the diode. Try it---you'll like it!

      @@adamjohnson4975 It will work. The longer the wire, the better. Don't expect to run a toaster oven from it or even low wattage light bulb. I've heard depending on RF intensity around the wire that it will light an L.E.D. , and you don't need a rectifier diode because the L.E.D. itself will rectify the raw signal, and light up. Crystal radios of yesteryear used no batteries depended on this power to power the headphones.

    You have the meter set to mV (thousandths of a volt). You can measure this voltage on any dipole antenna and even more if there is a transmitter nearby. There can be no question of free energy.

    • @-ism8153
      @-ism8153 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ah, that's what I was trying to figure out- it would be very impressive if it were volts, but that seemed unlikely.

    • @DL-kc8fc
      @DL-kc8fc 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@-ism8153 In the old days, I could actually use the power of a nearby 30 kW TV transmitter in my weekend cottage without electricity to turn on a filament light bulb - it was enough to stretch the wire between the trees and ground the other wire. After a while, however, measuring cars drove around and probably looked for a loss of radiated power. Subsequently, they extended the radio shadow around the transmitter, or adjusted the radiation pattern, so that the supply of "free energy" ended very quickly. :) Since then, it was only on the crystal, so I measured only about 10mV. :)

    Al2O3 is semiconductor too. Maybe it will work better instead of copper or nickel? Just make it. But you need to glue the wire only at the extreme points, avoid crossing the wires. Achieve tight contact of the wires of one metal with the plate of another metal through the aluminum oxide.

  • @hatac

    Basic thermoelectric or Seebeck device. Black plastic heats up the wires which transfer electrons to each other creating a circuit. Current flows. It needs to be on a cooled surface; the table would have worked. Add shaded cooling fins for more effect. Add a Fresnel lens several centimetres sun ward to get more light and heat per square cm. Eliminate reflective shiny glue patches with a finer coating of solvent diluted superglue and a vacuum packing unit. This is a good school teaching tool. There is a large seebeck device in the 1980's Mother Earth news magazine energy edition. Several square meters, several watts.

    For the silicon material you need a layer doped with phosphorus and a layer doped with boron, and they shall meet together to make a junction between them. Phosphorus doped silicon goes on top of the boron doped silicon. The metal grid goes on top of the phosphorus doped silicon while the metal sheet goes to the bottom of the boron doped silicon. The grid needs to have glass on top of it.

    You did this fast, and it is not for sure all wires are well connected to the strip; it is not soldered or well clamped and there could be glue in between.
    So chances are you could get a higher voltage if taking a little more time.
    Questions:
    Is there a minimum distance between the wires? Or can I put in any amount as long as the + and - remains isolated?

    • @ujjalmajumdar618
      @ujjalmajumdar618 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@mexicanterminator576 To know that you'd need to know what a resistor is. A resistor is a passive two terminal electrical component that limits the flow of electric current. Put very crudely it is a thing that resists the flow of electric current by sort of slowing down the flow electrons. The most basic I can get before hitting a major regress is electric current is measured in amperes and there's another thing called potential difference which is measured in volts(just take them as it is, given the fact that I would first have to explain the concept of an atom to get any further) and resistor makes it such that it would take more voltage to get the same ampere compared to what you'd get without a resistor. Now a resistor that decreases resistance with increasing luminosity (brightness of light) on its sensors is a photoresistor. Hope it helps.

  • @kreynolds1123

    How does this work? Photon, through the photoelectric effect causes electrons to be kicked off the surfaces of metals at different rates depending on the type of metal. Google photo electric work function. Many electrons make there way directly back to the same wire but some make it to the other wire more freqently than the other way around, and can only make it back if you provide a circuit path where it can give up its energy doing work for you. A few tens of millivolts is exactly what one could expect from a single cell like this.
    Silicon solar cells use semiconductor NP junction that only allow current to flow in one direction. That means of those electrons that get kicked off one side, more end up returning through a circuit and ultimately doing more work.
    Silicon may be better but it's not easy to make on your own.

    • @bledlbledlbledl
      @bledlbledlbledl 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      in a thermocouple, the two different kinds of wire would be in direct contact with each other, not separated by insulating plastic/glue. That said, the device shown here is woefully inefficient.

    • @dentonfender6492
      @dentonfender6492 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      That might be true if the metals were laminated together. They are seperated by milimeters of space superglued to plastic or polymer surface. A transparent surface on one side, and a black plastic polymer on opposite side. Unless those polymers have some kind of electrical properties that allows the Seebeck effect to work without the two dissimilar metals actually touching each other, I just don't see the device working as a thermocouple.

      No he has not unless black plastic has the correct electrical properties. The two dissimilar metals he used need to be in contact to work as thermoelctric generator or what is called the Seebeck effect. He knowingly or not has created an antenna array, and is measuring the electrical potential in the milivolt range on his Multimeter.

  • @johnslugger

    I can't believe people don't recognize a battery when they see one. 2 dissimilar metals side-by-side with a strangely high amount to superglue in between them to act as a solid-state electrolyte. When sun hits the superglue it becomes more volatile and starts dissolving the copper thus finishing the battery circuit and making electricity. Don't forget superglue is a cyanate or a cyanide derivative and it dissolves metal which creates electricity especially when warmed up . A copper zinc battery has a very short service life. This is not a photo resistor since it's not resisting in the sun but making power. This is a solid-state battery with a very short life actually, dead in 30 days or less.

      Interesting idea---the solid electrolyte. I agree it can't be a photo resistor unless somehow the black plastic polymer has some kind of photoelectric effect, or electrical properties. I would bet the black polymer is electrically neutral for the most part. I agree with the guy who states the circuit is acting as an antenna, and that the Multimeter is set on the milivolt range. There is so much RF radio frequency in our world be generated for all sorts of purposes including broadcasting that it makes sense that you will find milivolt readings from metal. You can actually light an LED from a long wire antenna by connecting the anode of an LED to a fairly long wire electrically isolated suspended in the air, and the cathod of the LED to a good ground such as metal water pipe. The LED acts to rectify the RF hitting the antenna, and at the same creating light from the LED. You couild probably even possibly tune the circuit using a coil, and capacitor to maximize the conversion of RF energy from a particular frequency. I haven't tried this, but it seems that it might work. This is how a radio reciever works for the most part. Some of the first radio receivers used crystal rectifiers made of Lead Sulfate called Galena. I made them when I was a kid with Lead I collected from the streets that came from tire balancing, and sulfur used to kill fungus I found in the orchards where I grew up. Galena was probably one if not the first recognized semiconductors----you had to find the semiconducting spot on the crystal with what they called a cat whisker.

    You can find on You tube a method of making a solar cell using Copper Oxide by heating on hot plate a sheet of Copper until oxide is built up on plate. Then connecting a wire to the copper plate on the back, and then dipping the plate into a vessel of water where the water acts as the connection to the copper oxide that was produced on the surface of the copper plate. A wire acting as an electrode would be set into the water as a connection to the copper oxide. Put the whole apparatus in the Sun, and power will be generated from this home made cell. I would think that if you could coat the Copper oxide layer with the transparent Tin oxide along with the metal collectors that the cell would be even more efficient, and not deterioate in short time by being immersed in water.

      @@kreynolds1123 The most amazing thing about LED's is that there is a spot between the P, and the N type semiconductor materials that actually gets as hot as the surface of the Sun. I read this somewhere, and was fascinated by the idea of an area that is measured in nanometers between the sandwich of the materials used in an LED could for a continuous instant reach those temperatures like 10,000 degrees. The area is no small that any heat is almost instantaneously dissipated, and of course the majority of the electrical energy (80 %) is converted to light energy in typical LED.

    • @kreynolds1123
      @kreynolds1123 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@dentonfender6492 I think your refering to the color temperature being the same color temperature of sunlight. The photons are emitted as electrons fill electron holes at the pn junction. Electrons in a semiconductor have a higher energy level than electron holes so must emit photons in order to jump and fill an electron hole. Now the temperature of the atoms at the junction are nowhere near the temperature of the sun. But the electon weight is so much less than an atom that when the energy is released when it jumps into to a hole relasing a photon allowes the photon to be of simular energy as photons emited from the surface of the sun. Maybe one might be tempted to say electron temperature vs the temperature of atoms, because electeon temperature in a plasma where electrons can be treated seperat from atoms, can be very much hotter than positive charged atoms, but I'm not sure if that has any meaning in a solid.
      Incadencent bulbs emit only 5% of their energy into visible light while the remaining 95% is converted to infrared light and heat in the wires. And though LEDs are many times more efficent, LEDs still turn, 65-75% of the energy into heat.
