    Jiu-Jitsu, Judo, Wrestling, Sambo, Leg locks... It all works! Put them all together and you get something special. What if Damian Maia was not open to learning Judo?? For those of you who don't know Maia does a lot of Judo and Wrestling, MANY of his takedown are a hybrid of Wrestling and Judo technique.

      would it better to start with judo and then progress to bjj then?

      kamen25 most definitely! I'm no expert but I do have enough knowledge to state that judo would be the best transition to BJJ

      I would say bjj first because being thrown involves more risk then starting on the ground. WHen you start geeting a feeling for the movement, you can work yourself up and start doing all takedowns. Thats how i roll;)

    Many Karate systems also have similar leg reaping techniques. All the arts blend together, it takes time to see how. An open mind is the key to unlocking all that the martial arts have to offer. This is a fantastic video. Thank you for sharing his unique greatness with us.

    As a judo guy myself, it's great to see Judo get some love, but I'm kinda of bummed wrestlers are going to pick up these techniques when they are already bad ass and tough as nails. Oh, well...

    • @kcwliew
      @kcwliew 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Yup - no one who's actually done any judo would say it's useless and it sucks... Like all things, it's situational and it depends on training. It doesn't appear to be great for MMA because very few people have taken the time to convert it over into no-gi scenarios - not to mention the fact that it's gotten consistently more sport like and watered down over the years (I cried when they took out all leg grab takedowns (i.e. morote gari).

    • @zshakur
      @zshakur 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      So....pick up some wrestling techniques.

    Hey Firas seems like most bjj schools either don't teach or not that proficient at teaching stand up grappling and takedowns. Could you discuss how a jiu jitsu player with no takedown skills should approach learning stand-up grappling techniques from wrestling and judo? If you were a novice how would you start? What would you say are the fundamental skills one needs to learn? Things like how to fall properly, off balancing, body positioning, etc... Thanks

    • @Klempo92
      @Klempo92 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I know you didn't ask me, but if there is no way you can go to wrestling or judo classes somewhere (and that really is the best option), you could start with any DVD by Jon Trenge. He explains stuff really well, and a lot of DVDs deal with the basics. Also, Firas puts some wrestling stuff here, so there's that.

    • @psyience3213
      @psyience3213 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      the best is just to find a gym with someone knowledgeable in grappling. jiu jitsu should incorporate judo/stand up grappling, even if they're not an mma school. how can you be proficient in bjj if you don't even know how to take someone down. you couldbe a Badass off your back but I'd you get thrown into an armbar your done for.
      it took me a long time to find a gym I wanted to join. price, diversity of techniques, location.. there are a lot of factors. but when you find the right one, its kismet

      I think you mean Uchi mata (in judo) to osoto garish, no? It's a common judo combo, if you do a search, tons of videos pop up on that combo.

    I have a background in Judo, in addition to Kung Fu, and have now cross trained in Catch Wrestling. What I have observed is that wrestlers, seem to be more effective/ dominant when doing Judo than Judo players who don't practice wrestling. Freestyle wrestling and Greco provide superb balance and technique. As a wrestler if you cross train into Judo, you have the upper hand. Problem is see with Judo alone is, they constantly get taken down and aren't able to stop take downs as effective as wrestlers. Just look @ MMA.

    • @martiallife4136
      @martiallife4136 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Z31Rider You're right. You have to understand each one. Jason Morris was a wrestler and the moves he used like uchi mata is not unique to Judo. When folk style was catch wrestling they used that throw and we're more throw oriented because they practiced on carpet or on the floor. The double leg being taught today would destroy your knee if you hit the knee over and over on a floor. Jason understood the strengths if both arts to win.

    • @ClayMationNation
      @ClayMationNation 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@martiallife4136 Actually, I trained at Jason's school for about 3 years and my understanding is that he won the state championship in wrestling using only Judo Techniques adapted to no Gi situations. I don't know if he ever trained specifically wrestling but I don't think so from what I recall of him.

    Hi Firaas.
    Could you do a video on how to beat Judo guys? I get tossed around like there's no tomorrow against all my judo friends. And they can almost always tap me in weird ways from side control. The ONLY thing that seems to work for me is to pull guard and work from there.
    Which areas / weaknesses in Judo can a BJJ player exploit? Where do we have advantages? What would a basic game plan look like?
    Thanks

    learning both judo and bjj is the ultimate combination. However, if one only had to choose 1, then it should be Judo. If one is in a street fight, and goes to guard, one risks his or her head getting stomped in. therefore, from a street fighting point of view, and self-defense point, Judo is better.

    Jason Morris is such an underrated guy. Like, even in the US Judo world he's kinda underrated. Dude is a beast and basically one-ups Jimmy Pedro's pedigree by just a notch in most categories: Better college wrestling career, better Olympic judo career, I just don't get how Pedro gets so much more fame in the judo community than Morris, they're even from the same era and were on the same team. I dunno, it's just kinda baffling to me.

      Pedro coaches more successful athletes, also id say Pedro is better when it comes to the Gi and Gi oriented tactics. Jason is who i would want if i was competing in MMA, Wrestling or No gi grappling though.
