That came out cool man , I dig the low budget makeover with the sourced used parts in good shape. Saves you from crying about the first scratch on a new part 😂
had this same exact car. cold weather package. some of them have faulty brake relay sensors. if the brake lights ever stay on, just get a new brake relay sensor, it's a 5 dollar fix
Yes the wheels are from an older Wrangler, had to use adapters of course to match up the bolt pattern. Love the TDIs! I sold it and the folks that bought it thought they could sell it for more so it is for sale on FB marketplace
Yup exactly. Two pieces of thick walled 1 inch pipe welded to the bumper. Then holes drilled in the cross bar and bolted through the 1 inch pipe. Also bolted at the bottom to the skid plate
there are a lot of different ways to do it. In the video, Im using Jeep springs and ford F-150 front shocks for the rear (more travel) but since then I have swapped to Tiguan lift springs and it rides much nicer. On another one I used MK5 strut mounts with a home made spacer in the front and Jeep WJ shocks and a spring spacer in the rear.
I bought a 2001 Beetle TDI 5 speed last fall. Put a 2" lift on it and put 215/65/16's on it. I need a push bar for the front and can't find one anywhere. Where did you get the one on this Beetle? And was it bolted on or welded on?
I welded posts on the front bumper (through holes in the cover) then bolted the push bar onto those posts. The push bar is actually from an F250. You are going to have to fabricate your own system for mounting. Im not aware of anything made for the beetle. Lots of ways to do it though
so for the lift, jeep front springs off of a stock 4wd xj i assume, late 90s f150 front shocks and bore out the lower holes on the vw axle, what about the front? i saw u cut the sway bar but thats all, would the front lift not fit with oem sway bar?, will be sourcing parts for my vw very soon and want to be sure, dont wanna run spacers if i dont have to
Thats a long answer. Originally I used the Jeep springs and just compressed the crap out of them onto stock struts. Rode like crap. Then used VR6 springs on stock strut and made a 2.75 inch spacer to go onto of the strut. Was a little nervous about that spacer (basically a strut extender on the top). So then I welded up MK5 spacer, converted to MK5 strut bearings and used that. Took a little bit of welding to make the MK5 style spacer. Recommend joining the FB group "lifted water-cooled VWs". this questions get asked 20 times a day there.
@@hestermannmotorwerks ive looked extensively through that page, specifically for the beetle setup and lots of different answers and options im a decent fabricator but if someone had a decent recipe that worked already i would go with that, how does the rear ride with the bigger springs? Building spacers for the front seems to be the way to go to keep from preloading a spring by the over extension of a shock
2000 F 150 front shock on the back and my favorites are VW tiguan lift springs. Ive also used Jetta VR6 auto wagon springs. The jeep springs are too stiff for me
I think she just sent me an email from Tampa! Unfortunately something went wrong driving from where ever she bought it. I haven't seen it in over a year now.
that will give you about an inch lift, for the additional lift you can build spacers. I suggest you join the facebook group "lifted water cooled VWs" This is discussed daily
If you are on Facebook, I highly recommend "lifted water-cooled VWs" I also have facebook channel "Hestermann Motorwerks" but there isn't that much on the lifted VWs on it.
This makeover turned out awesome.
Thanks!
super cool, ive been thinking of doing that to a beetle as well
I used to have a lifted rabbit pickup that was quite useful for the occasional dirt roads and mild off roading.
Get some gnarly truck tires.

You nailed it! This is low budget! Started with intent of Gambler500 but now it’s kinda getting too nice!

Industry, thy name is Hesty! Just awesome, again. And now you work on a 'real' Jeep. :)
Pro job, man...
Awesome build 👏 👌 😎
Thanks 👍
Love how he just put an audi wheel in there
Audi TT center console too! and the lower control arms and strut bushings are Audi TT
Thanks for sharing.
AWESOME BUILD!!!
thank you sir!
What was the roof rack that you used
I saw this bug for sale in fb market ! Great project. I have a 2000 VW beetle TDI myself. Those wheels are from a jeep wrangler/ Liberty?

I'm wanting to build a gambler 500 car and have decided with the new beetle. Maybe I can ask you a few questions about your setup?
how was the bull bar attached ?
Welded 1 inch pipe to the bumper. Corresponding holes in the bull bar, bolts through bull bar and into the 1 inch pipe
Looks nice! Installing my lift kit soon! How did you install that bull bar? I see the two pins sticking out…. Did you weld them?
Yup exactly. Two pieces of thick walled 1 inch pipe welded to the bumper. Then holes drilled in the cross bar and bolted through the 1 inch pipe. Also bolted at the bottom to the skid plate
possible to get some pics of the bull bar brackets?

Sorry I don’t have any handy and I don’t have the car anymore.
Cool beetle!!! Where did you get the roof rack???
it is a Yakima Roof rack with a cheap Amazon basket. I just fabbed up the light mounts
What rear struts are you running? (Shocks). I lifted mine as well but my rear suspension is suoer stiff.
F150 shocks and Tiguan lift springs
Nice work. It’s cool. What Parts do the car higher?

Where are you located? I can’t find no one who can lift my 2006 Volkswagon Beetle in Jackson MS
@@titearagates7639 I bought the VW High Life lift kit, then installed it myself, but any shop that does shocks and struts could install it for you.
Do you need to regear it for larger tires? What shocks for the rear? Cool build
The TDI with some power enhancements seems to handle it just fine. 2000 Ford F-150 front shocks used for the rear on the beetle
@@hestermannmotorwerks ours is a 2.0 non turbo. May have to chip it or something to handle the tire size increase. Thanks!

unfortunately not, sold it to a lady that really wanted it!
did lifting it make it way more comfortable than it was?
no it actually gives it a little more bouncy ride. particularly the bigger wheels and tires

i have one that i turned into a ute and may lift it and raptor line it. thinking about it
I have plans for a Ute like this, when I can get to it lol!
@@hestermannmotorwerks I am already building one. May be asking some questions.
what did you do to lift the front.
Made spacers to go on top of the stock shocks. I plan to switch it to mk5 style strut mounts
what tire size on it?
Those are 30s. Later I went down to 215/75/15s to eliminate all rubbing
I need to fall in to your dms some how! Im looking to do the exact thing and would love your input

Syncro?
I wish but sadly no just FWD
Hey man where did you get the liner and how much did it take to coat the whole thing?
Amazon for the raptorliner and local paint shop for the tint. I used 3 bottles of raptorliner but should have used 4
Still gets 40 mpg yes
yup! well if you don't thrash on it. LOL love these diesels!
Me want
I have that car at my house Volkswagen beetle
Cool! Did you get the engine fixed?
