I love the bed cover. Any info on building it?
@@jeepingneatus it just cut down from a full size truck. I don’t remember which one off hand but any will work as long as it is bigger than your Ute.
@hestermannmotorwerks great idea!
Is it 1.9 tdi or 1.8 20vt?
The video covers both
What if you only have one key
@@wilsq30 the only way I know to do it with one key is remove the door lock, hold it in the lock position with a screwdriver (in the slot the door lock goes into) and then do the buttons on the fob
If my new key has a trunk unlock and my old one doesn't, does this method program the new button as well?
I am trying to program a used comfort module to our 2002 UK golf mk4 tdi, I cannot buy it new anymore. I got a matching part number unit, but cannot seem to program 2 keys to it using this method, only the first one. Is there any reason this might be the case? Can you only program a maximum number of keys to each module and once programmed these slots can never be deleted/changed?
Andrew, as always, you are the most gracious with your craft! Thanks!
Thank you Mr Hyson!
I wonder if a magnetic sheet would work instead of tape?
There is a company sells plastic plugs on eBay if you don’t like the tape
Hypothetically could I skip all the wiring if I don’t care to have cruise control and reverse lights and whatnot? Will the car function otherwise?
If you reprogram the ECU to be manual, I think it will still run ok but technically not legal to not have backup up lights. Clutch safety switch can be important too
Whoooo men nice job
Another great video Andy-wish it was out two months ago when I cut my Beetle but will review it for my second one. Some excellent points such as leaving an inch in the fender well to secure the brace. I cut mine too short and didn't have a lot of structure left but I made it work. I also wasn't careful and cut my antenna wire. Luckily my new system doesn't require it. Will also incorporate the rain gutter extension in the next build. Thanks again for taking time to put these videos together as they are extremely helpful.
Thanks Andrew. Very useful info.
Great video for the new/novice builder. Excellent points about the correct tool for certain cuts as well as the recommendation for the types of blades. Prior to this video I spent a lot of time and $$ figuring out the correct blades to use. I concur the the body saw-it is excellent. I also used (tried to use) an mini Eastwood panel saw but my small 30 gallon compressor couldn't keep up. Something to consider when buying tools and later spraying. Electric small grinder is a must have and Andy is spot on about the wheels flying apart. Thanks Andy for putting this video together!
@@briancurley4861 you a Darryl both pointed out the importance of a compressor when thinking about air tools! Good point!
Thanks for the tips, I am building a Subie wagon, came across some differences between the sedan vs the wagon but figuring it all out . Will share pictures when I am further along.

How can I get out to u man need some help
Great tutorial 👌 well done!! And thank you!
Working on a 08 Beetle. Fenders are a little different. Your technique for 08 would be much the same as a 1999?? Your videos are really really helpful . I did a 06 Charger 3 years ago but have forgotten as much as I learned.
It sort of works. but its actually simpler. On 06-10 beetles, the wheel liner brackets are glued on the fenders instead of molded in. Usually they just fall off when you remove the fenders. So you pretty much do the same procedure but with individual brackets instead of the entire section of fender. Prep them well and then glue them in the fiberglass quarter panel. Requires more clamps though
@@hesty32 Thanks! I have already trimmed about 3 inches of fender. I may try bonding that ( with brackets) to maybe get the bracket locations close to where they need to be??
@@DavidWard-q7ethat will work. Basically the same in this video. Might not like to hear it but the best way get them in the correct place is to actually install the wheel liner
That was awesome! Thank you so much for posting this video! I have been searching for this video for better than 2 years now. I bought a 2001 Jetta TDI that already had an automatic to 5 speed swap and I have never has cruse or reverse lights. Not having to push the clutch in to start it does not bother me, but I have had a phantom slow parasitic drain this whole time. Looking forward to opening her up and setting her straight. Thanks again, subbed and thumbs up.
How do I program a new chip? My fob will unlock the door, but when I use it to crank my car, it immediately stalls. My old key fob works perfectly
That’s a whole different thing and way more entailed. You need to use VCDS, VAG-Tacho or similar program to program the Key code to the ECU and cluster.
@hestermannmotorwerks thanks. Thats what I was afraid of
Thanks for this..... you've just saved me £100!!! Got 2 new keys cut and programmed for my 2004 VW Polo Sport last July.... one just stopped working (it would automatically open the doors but wouldn't de-activate the immobiliser). The original car-key chap said £100 to re-program it as it was out of warranty. Following the instructions in your video re-programmed the immobiliser!!!! I've tried quite a few other youtube offerings but yours is the only one that worked. Very good video, extremely grateful, thank you so much. xxx
What was the roof rack that you used
Does this work for the mk6 auto to manual swap?
I haven’t done a MK6 yet so I really don’t know for sure. The DSG has much of its wiring and sensors internal as compared to the old autos so you would have to spend some time in the wiring diagrams.
@hestermannmotorwerks yeah, from everything I have read so far, it looks like I just have to wire up the clutch position sensor and the reverse light switch and code the ecu. I will post an update when I do those two.
Hi am planning to swap my mk4 golf AZJ 2.0l petrol to manual transmission. Kindly advise on the gearbox model that fits my car
Is this the same mechanism for the vw transporter T5 2.5L 6 speed 2009
Sorry I don’t know for sure. Haven’t had to work on the T5s. I suspect they are very similar
I replace mine and later on my cv axle bolts came off. Is it cuz I didn’t torque it right I forgot how I torque it
yes, important to torque it correctly and I recommend using blue lactate on them. depends on the size of the bolt for what the torque should be. there are 3 different sizes
Most of them are 59 ft/lbs as per the video
@@hestermannmotorwerks I have a gti vr6 12v
Same as williamh used the valet key in ignition and my working key fob to code it to the car. I even left the window up so had to re unlock the car. Thanks for the tips
glad to hear it worked out for you!
what are those holes on the flaps for?
This video is so so much helpful as am looking into doing a auto to manual swap I have a Golf mk4 2.0 l with the knowledge I have will make up and fire up my baby
Hi did u manage
How much would this run me if I took it to a shop?
Thank you so much for making this video. Saved me $200 at the dealership (just to reprogram an existing fob!) when one of my fobs lost its programming. Had to reprogram both at the same time and worked perfectly.
@@michelledel4131 glad to hear it helped!
What about the immobizer. Will it recognize it???
No unfortunately this has nothing to do with the immo. That has to be done with VCDS or similar system
2002 Beetle gls 1.8T 01m to o2j swap. There is no wire (even on the wiring diagram) for pin 13 at the tcu to ecm pin 19. No pin 19 physically at the ecm connector nor pin 13 at the tcm connector. I see a pin 12 on the diagram (i looked for a 2002 jetta as well, still no pin 13 or 19) pin 12 leads to pin 41 on the ecm. Does this still apply to swapping to pin 66?
Yes any of the connections from the TCU to ECU (ECM) can be used to make that circuit. Since the TCU will no longer be used/powered, you can take any of those circuits BUT! Sometimes there is a “T” that takes that signal somewhere else for example there is often a ABS to TCU to ECU 3 way and if you remove that TCU to ECU leg, you disable the ABS to ECU leg.
U are an artist!lindo!
What number fuse does the black green wire run to @19 minutes thanks!
Sorry don’t have that offhand but should be fairly easy to find in the manual
I have a mk4 2002 and I can't fix the mileage, can you help me
If you mean adjust the milage displaying on the odometer, I can’t help with that. If you mean your milage per gallon is low, I would recommend servicing the vehicle with new air and fuel filters, check tire pressures, look for boost leaks (if a turbo car) along with the usual checks for dragging brakes and suck
@@hestermannmotorwerks I don't know how well you understand me, but I had an automatic car and I changed it to manual, now the mileage doesn't work and I saw your video on the Internet and I wrote to you if it helps me
@@eneshallaci ah ok! Recommend you double check the wiring at the connector on the back of the transmission (speed sensor). Also, there is a small round magnet that sits under the cap of the sensor connector. Sometimes it gets misplaced and then speedometer and odometer will not work
If the speedometer still work but the odometer does not, I suspect the problem is in the gauges itself
hey, this video is absolutely amazing. manual swapping my 1.8t gti soon! I did have one question though, do you need to swap in a manual ecu? and if so is there any benefit to this? thanks!
I hope everyone appreciates the wealth of knowledge and ability to teach Hesty brings to the net… I don’t even need to watch this video because I’ve done it a few times and I just set it to play while I work on some other car stuff in the background. I still can’t help but be thankful for Andy doing the Lords work out here… Keep them Mk4s on the road and train up a generation of people that can fix their stuff instead of buy new crap. Thanks again Andy 🤙🏽
26:20 also many places that don’t currently have emissions inspections may have them in the future. For example: Bexar County, TX will be subject to emissions testing starting in 2026.
Can you tell me some differences in the wiring from what you showed in the video if I have say an AWP 2005 GTI with 09a and I’m dropping in an 02j 5 speed? I would love to grab a copy of the manual (and will at some point) but I am in the doghouse at the moment for how much I’ve already spent on this swap 😂 if I can just get through the wiring I’ll be gtg. Much appreciated!
The wiring should be really close if not exactly the same between the 04 (in the video) and your 05. Don't be afraid to use the OHM meter function of your multimeter just to verify you are getting the correct wires. The ECU in particular can be very hard to see what pin numbers are and in some cases they read right to left instead of left to right
@@hestermannmotorwerks thank you! I will be doing that. (One more trip to the junkyard today for a couple missing clutch switches and I think I’m ready to tackle the wiring!) Apparently you were the deciding factor on the successful swap for my guy @BMSmouthers so I really appreciate you and all you do! These videos are a godsend!
I have a Golf mk4 90bhp from 2001, it has central locking but only a normal key without remote function. I got a new key fob from ebay, will this coding method work with my normal key on the ignition or is there something else I need to do?
This should do it for you
My saviour! Thank you from Italy. You are the only one that shows the left hidden bolt, the bronze colored one. Thank you! (Golf mk IV 4motion TDI)
So I have a brand new aftermarket fob this should work?
It should if it is good and has a good battery
I wish they had a kit for the 84-01 Cherokee!! I got a couple 2drs that would LOVE to do this to!!!
Do you know how to do it with a golf mk 8 please
Super useful video that explains a lot of different questions!
