    The Largest Stolen Valor Fraud in United States History was discovered in February 2022, and the Story HOPEFULLY ends today. Sarah Cavanaugh, AKA Sarah Bregler of East Greenwich Rhode Island, claimed to have been a wounded Marine Veteran with tours in Iraq and Afghanistan where she was engaged in combat, wounded, and later awarded a Bronze Star with Valor. Over the course of several years Sarah used her false wounded Veteran status to scheme Veteran Charities, the VA, VFW and other organizations out of hundreds of thousands of dollars. Sarah's court dates ended with her sentencing this month. Join me as we break down what she was charged with.

      shes now a convicted felon who went to federal prison, meaning she loses a majority of her rights until she goes to court after sentence to get them restored and she has that stain on her record permanently
      on top of that she has to pay several hundred thousand dollars, meaning she'll probably lose everything she owns from either selling it to pay or it being taken by banks for other various reasons
      and then remember that she will probably never get a job that pays more than something like minimum wage, being both a convicted felon and the now infamous "largest stolen valor fraud"

    I hate that I have disability from the VA.
    I remember so many people bragging about how they cheated the system with claiming PTSD from Drill Sergeants yelling at them. But I needed the help from the guilt that just wouldn't go away.
    Now my therapist and wife are trying to push me to join veteran organizations that receive donations in order to get out and try to get my life back on track. However, knowing people who have been through substantially worse and are financially worse off than I am I feel bad about potentially taking a slot that one of them could have used.
    Knowing that there are veterans who abuse the system for their benefit leads me to avoid these organizations in order to make sure there's room for those who need it.
    So the fact that this bit ch took so much from so many people while claiming to be a vet is fucking infuriating. All the times I question whether or not I deserve the things I have and going without in the hope of someone else's benefit torn down by this piece of sh it who takes takes takes all while pretending to be a part of a population that needs it the most (and usually doesn't sound off on it because that's how they were trained; suck it up, drink water, carry on).

      It actually seems about the right amount of time. (Comparitively to other crimes) the average time served for non violent offenses in the U.S. is less than the time she got. Odds are, if she is a cooperative inmate she will be paroled prior to doing the full 70 months (If I had to guess I'd say she will probably be eligible for parol in as little as 24-30 months). You also have to take into consideration that she needs to be able bodied to work in order to pay off the remaining $220K. If she did 20 years there would be 0 chance of that. As is there is still a pretty low chance it will ever be paid back.

    Law student here who's worked for awhile at a public defender's office, so I'd like to weigh in on the whole defense attorney thing.
    Yes, defense attorneys often have to defend very bad clients, and it can seem like what they're saying is ridiculous and that they only care about winning the case - but please understand, our justice system is set up in such a way that this behavior is not only encouraged, but is *required* for it to properly function.
    A defense attorney is meant to be a "zealous advocate" for their client. They are supposed to see the desired outcomes only from their client's perspective, and if their client chooses, work tirelessly to pursue those outcomes. If a client insists that they're innocent, that they want to take the matter to trial, et cetera - it is their attorney's responsibility to do everything they reasonably can in their power to make that happen. Notably, this is not equally true for the State - a prosecutor is not meant to be a "zealous advocate" for the State and its interests, but actually an advocate for JUSTICE. So, their goal isn't to actually "win" (like it is for a defense attorney), their goal is to attain justice, even if that means dropping the case.
    This is because our justice system is adversarial. The defense is never supposed to just roll over and let the State win, they are supposed to attack and attack and obfuscate and do absolutely everything they can to weaken the State's case before a jury. That way, if the State wins, you know that the defendant had a fair chance and that the evidence against them really just was that good! In a way, a defense attorney spouting blatant bullshit in defense of their client actually makes us as a society more certain that the defendant was guilty after all.
    So, while it can be distasteful, we need defense attorneys and it is ultimately a good thing that they are as zealous as they are. Everybody, absolutely everybody deserves a zealous defense - and it's the State's burden to prove that defense wrong.

    • @joel2628
      @joel2628 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, I understand that people get upset over attorneys, but I think it is important to understand that the public defenders need to be rigorous and try everything in their power to fight against the charges. If only, to make sure that a proper trial is administered and no Constitutional rights are violated.
