- In this video we show how we got on in the British Masters 3000m Indoor Championships at Sheffield on 26th January 2025.
Dawn had never run on an indoor track before, whilst I had only run there once before, back in 2014.
Despite quite a few races between us on an outdoor track, the 200m indoor surface, complete with cambers, made for an interesting experience.
Slightly paraphrasing Chumbawumba, Dawn went down, then got up again. But could she achieve a BMAF medal?
It’s hard to comprehend banking round the corners unless you’re actually running on it yourself. Another tick in the variety box both 🏃🏼♀️ 🏃🏻
Congratulations on the 3000 🎉
Thanks. Yes, the banking didn't look much, but once on the track, it felt very different. I guess the more you run on it, the better you become. 🙂
Well done and well done on the 3,000 subs . Best wishes from Helen and Martin (Dereham Runners)
Thank you. We'll be in Dereham for the 5k in summer if it's on. 🙂
Well done for stepping on a track with some top top masters
Cheers. 👍
Surprising that few Yorkshire runners entered for a champs based in Sheffield. Goes to show the first step to winning is making the start line.
Great effort by both. Good how you've spotted the things to work on and will return to nail it.
To be honest we didn't even know until a lady approached Dawn after she got her BMAF bronze with another medal
Needless to say I sought out same lady after my race 😉
@@tworunningbrooms The secret is out for 2026. It will be the most hotly contested county champs in years! I say as I look up the time from when I last ran 3,000m....
Great effort! I did a couple of outdoor 3000s last year and it's certainly not an easy distance! 💪🏻😅
Thanks. We're not put off, so there may well be another attempt one day...😅
Great watch, thank you! I was hoping to enter this event (slow female v50) but I had already entered the Ferriby 10m. Unfortunately the timing of race entries / sell outs makes things difficult but having watched this and your confirmation of the friendly nature of the set-up I may give this a go next year …
Hope you had a good run at Ferriby. A race we've done afew times in the past.
BMAF is always worth a go at! 🙂
Well done both, poor Dawn looks so unhappy . I’ve done 24 hours on an indoor track in Bislett, no camber like that one but there was a small incline which became a mountain!
Thanks. Yes, I think the fall shook me a little. In fact, I ached for a couple of days after ...
Gosh, I couldn't imagine running for 24 hours on any track. Hats off to you! 💪
It's been years since I ran on an indoor track - high school and all different sizes depending on the venue (largest was a 300m indoor track which was the best one we competed regularly at). Some banked some not. It is definitely a bit awkward and it's definitely slower!
Anyway, well done! I need to find some local masters stuff (though TBH, I'm still in my 40s and I would not be remotely competitive with the locals).
Sounds like you have a bit of past experience on track there. Masters races are just so good in terms of camaraderie, too. 🙂
Well done both for giving it a good go. Kind of reminds me when I was last by a long way in the Middx Schools 3000 way back in one of my first races way back in 1984. Often wondered if anybody else is still running. I doubt it. When I tried indoor last winter it was over 800/1500/Mile and especially in the 800 was at least going "quite fast" and then the bends did not seem an issue and, if anything, helped. I remember doing a few easy laps round the track before a race to "try it out" and that felt "harder" to get round the bends. Not sure I would agree you lose 20 secs over 3000 on an indoor track. The UK male 3000 record by Josh Kerr was actually a split in an indoor 2 mile race. My indoor 800/1500 times last winter were about what would expect to do outdoors and indeed faster than I had run for a few years. I think you do need to get used to indoor (and indeed short) racing and also you were both in shoes/spikes you don't normally wear. I found when I am "struggling" the higher stack shoes kind of help whereas in lower stack ones/spikes just feel slappy. Anyway the general level of runners there is amazing although it is of course a National championship not your local parkrun! Usually there is the odd "average" runner to compete with. Just unfortunate for John this time but at least Dawn was sort in the mix. Hope haven't done any damage with the tumble.
The 15-20 seconds also came from the Vets AC chap in my race we spoke with afterwards. Maybe for people who aren't used to it rather than Josh Kerr. Clare E reckoned there was a little kink on that bend we kept stumbling on. Yes I'd be keen to give this another go. It's also given me a Vlog idea about different running surfaces.
The lady at the back of Dawn's race broke the world F75 record for Indoor Pentathlon I think.
I think they push the first k really hard Tim at this level you can see all races severe negative splits for 2 and 3ks except for Tony whose a master tactician. The skill is unless you have a chance of winning is gauging the first 1km. Int he m55 two guys ran close to 9.40 then a big gap to 10.17.... if you run 3.20 you are on for 10.00. Most what I watched was well under that for the first 1km.
@@garygraham2136 over 40 years I nearly always go off too hard in track races! The Irish TH-camr Lea Fulcher went off too hard it seems but he seemed to think his 9:37 was terrible. Not done that for 20 years when was a M35 !
@TimGrose yes a vet 50. Tony a master tactician and seemed to have a game plan. 3.01 at 1k. Still think for most runners even pace works better on the track.
@@tworunningbrooms I think it's the breathing as well john.
Super video
Thanks. 🙂
Well done both. I've done a few 5000m races and mile races on outdoor 400m tracks but (a) have never run 3000m and (b) have never run on an indoor 200m track so I think I would have found pacing very difficult. I'm sure I would have found running on a cambered track very tricky too. I seem to recall when I was a kid back in the 80's there was an Irish guy who was pretty much unbeatable over 1500m and the mile indoors and set various records but I can't recall his name.
Yes it wasn't the pacing so much as the camber and very dry air. I actually liked the laps whizzing by, even if there was 15 of them!
Well done on the medals and for taking part. 🎉
Thanks. 🙂
The fact you get out there and give it a go is inspiring.
Thank you. Yes, we do like to try races that interest us that we haven't done before. 😉
Well done to you both. Hats off for giving it a go. Not many of us are that brave 💪 👏
Thanks. Hopefully, there'll be more in the future. 😁
Well done both it looked tough 👍👏👏
Thanks. A different kind of race to our normal sort...😅
Hi guys more fantastic footage always look forward to more from you both. How did this race pop up im still getting used to england athletics
Thanks. We belong to Northern Masters Athletics Club as well as our first claim club as to run British Masters you need to belong to a Masters Club too. Although you can run in the race classed as 'open'. We saw the race on Northern Masters FB page.
Well done, both. I do enjoy the variety of events you go to; it's really interesting. As for the question about running on feelings? I've only ever had that in ultras because you're in your own head for so long. I can't remember which ultra runner said it, but if you can't solve a problem after thinking about it for hours on a run, then it isn't meant to be solved!
I guess so many more different elements go into an ultra. I've only done one, and Dawn none. The feeling of thoroughly fed up springs to mind 😅
@tworunningbrooms yup! That emotion comes on!
Well done both. Looks very tough!
Thanks. It was. 😅
Always good to give these things a go! (I say, having no intention of doing any track racing 😂)
Very local for you. But yes like nothing else we've ever done.
@@tworunningbrooms very local but a distinct lack of mud and blood compared to my usual outings 😆
Ha
Well done both of you, i enjoyed that very much. Looked like s great event and loved the attitude from both of you just focusing on your own race. Brilliant 👏
Thanks. We love to experience different types of running. 🙂
Thanks for sharing this event with us. Seems like a high quality field!
Yes hoping for something a little gentler on Saturday.
@tworunningbrooms I'll save 2nd place for you!
The track can be quite grippy and I’ve certainly had my spikes stick in it and stumbled a tad, although luckily I’ve not fallen over. Pity Dawn didn’t enjoy it but still a nice bit of bling she won 🏆
On the men’s race, it was a quality field. Tony is a World and European champ, Brent a top quality runner, and Lea, Jeff and Craig excellent runners. No shame at all being beaten by them John. I completely agree - the masters scene is brilliant for making friends and for the camaraderie. It’s one of the reasons I do this sport.
Dawn is determined to go back and do another now she knows what to expect. 🙂
Yes, in my race, I was willing someone slower to appear on the entry list! 😄
Class, congrats to you both
Thanks. 😊
Amazing effort guys, god it looked awful lol …… and how brilliant that you both came away with medals - congratulations to the both of you 💪💪
Thanks. It was an experience that at the time felt tough, but not stopped us wanting to do another, though. 😁
Great effort form both of you looking forward to future events 👍👏👏👏
Thanks. There will be many...😁
John, you mentioned a relaxed approach to the shoe situation, was this just at this particular meeting or is it a general policy now for masters runners? I ran track a few years ago in the North East and they were pretty strict at the time and spikes were tough on the joints! We’ll done to you both by the way👏🏻👏🏻
Thanks. We didn't actually see any directive. We were just told this. However, like yourself, we were witnesses to someone being told to change carbon shoes at an outdoor meeting last year. I guess it depends on the organiser of each meeting...
Lovely suited number for the momentous occasion 🥳🥳🥂🥂
What you do to entertain. 🤣
Bloody hell looks a decent v50 race
I think stacked is the modern word. 😅
Really enjoyed the video. Thanks for posting. I used to run indoors at RAF Cosford in the 80s where the banked bends were steeper. It’s a weird sensation. But like you the feeling of no air was worse for me and I’d forgotten that until you mentioned it. I’ll get my masters club application sorted!
Thanks. It's a different experience.
Good on you with the masters application! 👌
Well done, you two - I have run in outside track races from 100 metres up to 10 miles - but never indoors -- and looking how the camber on the bends affected you both - its going to be a no from me !!!
Thanks. I guess to run well indoors, you need to not run on it just once....🙂
Too painful to feel anything other than pain in anything less than 10k. Well done out there!
Definitely! Thanks. 😊
Thank goodness it wasn't a 10,000m race. Well done both of you.
@@stevefrith7283 50 laps. Is there a 10000m indoors? I'd like that!
Top effort. 3km track race is brutal. Check out Lea Fulcher who also has a TH-cam channel and ran in this race. Has a very interesting style of training and seems to be paying off.
Yes, I watched this morning and commented. Thanks 👍
W.runner number 314 is the embodiment of Olympic principles. Good luck and patience to her.
Yes, nobody goes to these events and doesn't try...💪
I have to do the 3000 m when I was 50 John think did 10:50.
That's a good time but still would've placed you last in that race. 😁
How do you spell that?I did 10 .10 Fiftyfor a pm indoors , three thousand metres I used to enjoy the indoors boot. It feels like a springboard. Round the bends, you got to be careful. And the breathing is hard
You have to be British (for obvious reasons) I saw the invitation (member of the NMAC myself) but anything national I avoid (Born a Yank though I have lived here since I was 13) .. Helps me focus on Boston anyway. I have feelings until it starts then I just shuffle as well as I can 😉
Plenty of other races out there to enjoy. Good luck for Boston!
You'll like this perspective of the same race
