Leash Training 2 - Introducing the Leash - Dog Training Video

- Once you've learned and practiced the long line work with your dog, it's time to move onward to the regular 4-5 foot leash.
In this video I address how to introduce the leash and teach your dog this next level of structure. It is important that your dog has an understanding from the longline training that will carry forward to the leash. Also be sure your dog is on a constricting collar such as a choke chain or martingale. This work should not be done on a flat collar or a harness (unless some medical issues demand it).
This training should take place for several days before we expect the dog to understand it and it should be put into the regular walk (especially in the beginning ) for a few months to make sure the dog is familiar with it as a part of the training.

I have seen the 180 turn-around many times before, but not the left turn correction and I love it! My dog is still pulling too much and the 180 just makes her run in front of me again... I think the left turn knee correction is going to work wonders! Thank you!!!!
This man is a boss, I've been around dogs an training since I'm 13 an he has it figured out.
I like your even-handed talking to your dog. I’m less patient and tend to raise my voice. I know it’s wrong, because I don’t want to break her spirit. Your advice is very helpful.
I just felt like giving up today on training my 11 month old husky not to pull. I’m going to practice this and I’ll keep trying. Thank you Robert.

So glad I found your videos. They’ve been immense help with my 2 year old. I took her from a shelter a few months back and she’s a relay street dog, sniffs at every little thing and loves to run around like crazy and do her own thing. Now she’s slowly starting to walk beside me, and I’ll use these techniques along with your toy training to teach her even better.
Do you already have a video on the “leave it” command? She’s way too curious when we go outside.
(Also, the silent stay is the most amazing thing ever. Simply brilliant!)

Now how about for a dog who will do all this very well when the distractions are low but when walking down the street and there's bikers, people walking, other dogs barking from their yards or passing by, squirrels running, birds swooping near...this is when our dog (reactive?) has a hard time. He will do soo well on leash when distractions are minimum..but add in my children coming on the walk (its like he wants to protect them, he acts different then when on a walk with only myself or my husband) and all others that i mentioned above at a constant during the walk (prime time busy time in town) then he is super anxious and not focusing and whining and pulling or even lunging sometimes. He is totally non aggressive. Very high energy. 1 year old. Maremma x yellow lab.

Great tip and appreciate the videos. Worked with my 6 mnth gsd pup this morning using the exercise, thank you. Having difficulty finding a comfortable short leash for my strong puller :) . Would you recommend yours from the vids? Looks like a strong and stretchy leather I thought. If so, where can I get one? I've been using a 4 ft double thick nylon that doesn't have alot of give, but is atleash strong for control, although can be tough on the hand.

So would the long line work good to correct a full grown dog that likes to pull and lead me? She also will not stop when I do. I’m new to learning how to train my dogs, and so she does have quite a few bad habits.
I'm not sure how to make this work with my Chihuahua mix.He only stands as tall as my calf.Because I do believe that just cuz he's small he still needs structure and rules.

My eight month old puppy is doing really well at loose leash walking but occasionally it nice to use a retractable leash when I want to give her more freedom. Do you think this is confusing? I'm trying to teach a heel command but then say "okay" to release her to walk further away but I still correct her if she starts to pull on the retractable leash. I think she's getting it, but maybe it would be easier to stick with one leash for now?

We have a ten month old golden retriever and for some reason everything scared him and he is not doing what I tell him , my question is this what’s the best time to train him before or after feeding.

My ECS can focus heel like nobody's business but her loose leash walking sucks....always has. My dog trainer buddy tried to explain this to me but never demonstrated it for me.This now makes sense. I have tried every method known to dog trainers (except the really punitive kind). In desperation, I tried the gentle leader and it was,very effective.....she despises the collar....I mean really hates it. When we go some place I put both collars...she has by now figured out that the gentle leader goes on if she misbehaves..it solved my problem....or rather it would be more accurate to say that it controls my problem.
Totally normal. It’s a completely different exercise.
What is the right time to introduce the leash to dog? My 3 month old puppy keeps biting his leash and don't leave it...when he's completely out into a new environment then he leaves but as soon as he remembers, he starts biting...

When not doing a training session how should you handle the walks
Seeing as no one else has replied.
Do the same method on a normal walk, Initially it might be the proverbial 2 steps forward 1 step back but you'll complete your walk. My dog heels perfectly but every now and then I'll do an about turn just to make sure she's paying attention.
On my four-month-old treeing Walker coonhound, leash pops are about as annoying as a fly in your face. I have not been able to break his concentration in areas of high distraction. Sniffing looking staring. The amount of 180,s I do, annoy me more than help him. It’s only been three weeks and I know he’s a puppy but I wish I would see a little bit more progress. I’ll be going to the E collar next but I have a feeling I’m going to get the same results for a while.
You’ve gotta learn to get his attention without distractions then ramp up the distractions. Bearing him up with any tool won’t work until the dog knows what you want.
Robert Cabral I can but mostly with treats. I say sit immediately sits I say down immediately downs if I say place he immediately places. But without treats it’s 50-50 on a command. And with distractions it’s like 5%. I’ll wait on the E collar. Incredibly smart dog but stubborn.

in this video, and most videos, I use a 3mm short link fur saver collar from herm sprenger or klein hundesport. In this video Maya is also wearing a martingale, but its not connected to the leash.

yes, you can start at anytime if you use motivational techniques first!
I started my Lab with a leash at 8 weeks old :)

I like the safety of a choke chain and my dogs have always worn them!

You have to teach your dog to be aggressive. So unless you want to do that, I wouldn’t. They’re naturally protective when needed most of the time.
I can see some guys try this and knee their dog like some kind of Thai boxers. Remember, Mister Capral said in the video, this is a GENTLE correction
Interesting heel to me means the dog is on your heels behind you. That's what I was taught. But I come from a farming background

My dogs will not follow me as I make the turns - they continue to pull in whatever way they want to go. I would like to see a training video from any of the sources that show a dog that does not already seem to be very obedient. My dogs know the basics of sit, down, wait, leave it, etc., but once outside this will all change. If they see a bird or squirrel no amount of telling them to leave it is going to keep them from lunging and pulling me towards that bird or squirrel. They really don't even need that kind of stimulus to want to pull me rather than stay with me, especially if I am walking both of them at the same time.
My dog walks on the other side..is that o.k? He's much better on the right side so I'd rather not fight it..

@@RobertCabralDogs I'm so right dominant that everything I do in obedience is from my right side. Eventually I realized trainers do everything from the left. I guess my end goal with my dog is that she follows me. We'll never be competing, so it doesn't matter, does it.
Always you posted same dog why don't post different breed dog like Rottweiler Doberman etc
