Aggressive German Shepherd Puppy Training

  • Understanding the difference between aggression and reactivity is a tricky thing. Often times people will mis-interpret these behaviors and not approach the training properly. The number one training method you want to apply will be structure & obedience. We want to always show the dog what we want, we want to avoid a tight leash and we strive to get our dog to be as "dog neutral" as possible.
Check out the full 40+ minute lesson of this video at:
    robertcabral.com/
Puppies are almost always under-socilaied and react this way. This is the first part of our training, lesson 1. In upcoming lessons you'll see further updates, but giving the dog this information early on sets the structure into the pups mind.

This is Sonny’s owner. It’s hard to find anyone doing anything with as much passion and mastery as Robert. I worked with two trainers prior to connecting with him, and both were super nice and encouraging, but lacked experience with a high drive puppy like Sonny. So it gave me hope to see Robert handle him in an effective and fair way and make it look like easy work. Sonny and I have been making good progress. Thank you to those who posted the kind comments.

Very good video showing how to deal with a hyperactive/eager puppy/dog. Problem is though that when out in the world meeting people, it's often within few seconds that they have their dog up in ur dogs face- opposed to these coworkers/friends with dogs. I try my best to spot people from a far and have them wait, but thats more with reactivity when going to meet the dog. A lot of ppl have been nice and waiting in that sense. So I guess an extra point to put here is that you need to be very observant when walking, as not everyone will be as cooperative in how your training your dog.

I never thought of "play behavior" as "predatory behavior", but makes perfect sense! Nothing wrong with "playing", as long as it's controlled & under handler's observation & permission. This is an EXCELLENT video-- this is a GSD at a "turning point", puppy can either learn controlled behavior, controlled "play" with permission with dogs that owner/handler doesn't mind him playing with (family & friend's well behaved dogs), or ESCALATION. Bravo, Robert!!

Great video. So helpful that you show all of it, despite of some people probably disliking portions of it. Saw the rest at the member section, absolutely worth watching.
In your mind Robert, do you believe that there are some typical main reasons to this kind of reactivity/high drive behaviour? Genes, environment etc? There are probably a mix of variables but would be interesting to hear if you have seen any repeating patterns over the years.

need to work on my ability to remain calm when trying to handle my pitbull/boxer's obedieance. she has tons of leash reactivity and can be inconsistent with obedience as she just turned 1 year i know she won't be perfect but im my frustration boils over which isn't effective. i need to go with the flow and give a proper reaction to my dogs actions without becoming overly emotional. a lot of this is a mental game once you understand the basics. this dog teaches me more about what i need to work on as a person each day.

My healer /shepherd mix puppy has had puppy training and understands commands, but the other day he got very aggressive with me. My husband had been out of town for two weeks and I had two perfect weeks with him taking him for walks etc. with little biting or aggression towards me. Then my husband came home. I was throwing the ball in the backyard with him and he was playing and then came up and started biting at me jumping on me biting not breaking skin, but it was aggressive and hurt(!) and I feel that I might might have done the wrong thing by grabbing his collar and his ear and putting him on the ground to have him submit but he overpowered me and did that behavior again with me. I got them on the ground again and he was in my estimation angry with me and I was so scared I ran inside until he calm down. I don’t know how to fix this. I would recommend a Herm Sprenger prong collar...2.5. Size with extra links.
Suppose to wear up high on the neck..
Robert Cabral has a video on the prong collar.
Your dog is reactive because your not in charge.no little or no structure.
We need to get you dog walking at your side in a heel.
      Not out front!
Out front your dog feels he must make the decisions. On who to bark at,where he wants to go etc.
Your in charge of when, where and at what pace your dog is allowed to go...
The leash with a prong collar is your structure machine.
We use it for walking, training and positive corrections.
      Questions?

The dog already learned a sit. And is so jumpy and reactive that it is I think good to give a sit command to switch the dog a bit off. Besides he was jumping on Robert which he needed to correct from the sit position bij stepping on the leash and keeping it short so the dog can not jump on him. Learn to read the dog, every dog is different and might need a different approach. That is how I see it. It is not an exact sience where everything is formulated and always works according to those formulas. Every dog is different.

I like this trainer,he is better than many that I see on line.but some of the analizations of the 5 month old dominate pup are a little off!
His direction about the loose leash are smart! But the pup needs socialization first, and a firm obedience coarse!! ( Requesting ) positions like ,come sit ECT. Without the pup understanding that it has no choice but to obey are really useless in establishing real control? Giveing treats are bringing the dog? The pup needs clear direction before the correction! He need to be put in a muzzle and allowed to interact with a more dominant male also in a muzzle, to teach it some clear understanding of his offensive behavior! The pup is in an adolescent stage , in the middle of his drive maturing .( Maturing from PLAY DRIVE TO PREY DRIVE! And wanting to astablish his dominance over any would be challenger! To much coddleing of the pup with its leash, if which he keep controlling with its feet! The handlers are catering to the dog who is purposely grabbing the leash with its feet and body! There has been no negative stimulus or consequences from the handlers for that behavior by the pup? When people want to nuter a male dominant dog, they are trying to fix a aggressive behavior from the wrong end? The biteing happen at the other end , which is still in tact!! And also sometimes the K -9' s which are the tools causing the problems. The other end has the love tools? .But over all ... Good distraction or rewards with the treats! I would prefer to use boogie dog to discurage that unwanted behavior that the pup displays. Because of the lack of clarity from the the human surrogate pack members.Who couldn't recognise appreciate measure earlier on with that pup

He looks like he would love to get off of that leash and play. Maybe run and be a dog. So many puppies (and dogs) are so frustrated because they never get to be a natural dog without human interference. How about letting this puppy play with other dogs and learn to socialize. Maybe he could have some fun and get a good energy burn before being tethered to a human by the neck.
