Leash Training Your Dog Part 1 Using a Long Line and Treats - Dog Training Video

  • This video is about Leash Training your dog. Teaching a good leash walk is not as complicated as it is made out to be. In this video I address using a long line and using treats to get your dog to stay with you on a leash walk and conditioning her to enjoy the process.
When you train your dog, being next to you should be one of the core basics. If your dog enjoys being in your proximity, it will go a long way in building a solid relationship between you and your dog.

This is by far the best video I have ever seen on the topic. No gimmicks just an easy way to help the dog learn. I recently adopted a 6 year old pit bull that had been looked over for years because he was high energy. He was quite the puller on leash, after three fifteen minute lessons he gets it, and he loves to train. That high energy is now channeled into learning that he enjoys. Robert I can't tell you how much I appreciate you!

I'd love to see this with a less-trained dog. Interesting approach. I've taught large dogs to walk on a loose lead--staring when they were pups in my living room (two GSDs and a hound)--lots or rewards for staying at my side, etc. One has passed on and remained a lovely walking companion throughout his life (as did the hound)--and could be allowed to walk in front of me when "off duty" and asked to return to a heel without drama. The other--now elderly--lives with my son now and I'm told continues to walk nicely. Am currently working with a 10lb dachshund/schnauzer pup that I want to work on a loose lead. I may give this a try as she is extremely bright and trainable but very, very busy. I don't think I'm interesting enough, lol.

The... The hound stayed on your side...? My Plotthound will, given a long line, let out her inner hunter and start scenting. Granted, she was started on game tracks. And on a short walking lead I can get her to not get in front of me, if I remind her at the beginning that that's what I expect. But if I give her freedom, she will go hunting ...

Thanks for this content Robert! I thought it would be a "wise" idea to take the husky mix I walk onto a nice 15-foot lead in a field to burn off some energy before structured work on loose-leash walking. Well we were having a really fun, rompy, lovely time until he saw a TEENSY chihuahua off in the distance. He got SUPER excited about it (think he couldn't believe it was a dog 😆😆💕 ) , was at the opposite side of me than little dog, so had all the slack to run back my direction, past me AND the remaining slack (meaning 30 feet) to get up speed, tore me down, nearly dislocated my shoulder and dragged me about 3 feet (I'm fine 😳). What did I do wrong here? (I'm on a major learning curve on my way to eventually becoming a dog trainer...!) TIA and very excited to watch your videos!!!

I watched this video late last night. I got up early and cut a 21' length of black nylon webbing attached a snap on one end with a Conway buckle and a loop on the other with a Conway buckle. I used it this morning on my year old Husky bitch I got from the pound two months ago. I have her working with a 5' leash but what a difference that extra 20' of leash made. (I snapped the 20' line onto a ring in the loop of the 5' lead giving me a 25' line.) Absolutely no leash pulling as I turned and changed directions. People have suggested a retractable lead but I know I'm going to enjoy walking her with this 25' line for sure. Haven't reached the point of turning her loose except in a well fenced environment. She is a runner and enjoys just taking off exploring which I need to work on with the long line before I can turn her loose.
Thanks for all the many training tips you provide. Even though I've trained a lot of dogs and had a K9 in the 1970s when I was a Deputy Sheriff I recognize there is a lot out there that I don't know. Yet that is.

I really respect you and i'm going to start using treats in my training, but i have to step in and say " not true" on the first part of video.
I am just a pet owner and learned to train dogs from books in the mid 80s. One of the first things i taught my pups and other misbehaved adult dogs is how to walk properly on a leash. 99 percent of the time i have a dog or pup heeling and sitting in one or two day on leash and soon after on voice command alone.
In the end i only used hand signals and whistling to recalled my dogs from a distance, to a heel when i lived in the mojave desert.
And my dogs loved me and were happy till the day they passed.
So i am going to try new things with my new pup when i get her so as to get rapid response to a command but i don't compete so ir's not really needed but i want to keep learning more in my life even tho i'm an old dog myself.
Thnx for all that you do and be blessed, Leo

I was really worried as I saw the thumbnail. I thought the black and white leash was a snake right next to you 😱
Very good video. I honestly don't get why people are unable to leash train their dogs. I worked as a volunteer at the shelter for years and leash trained the dogs there for the time they stayed there. I own dogs for over 15 years now and never had an issue with leash pulling.
I always find it so disturbing to see people walking their dogs almost choking them, where you can really hear the dog struggle to breathe, because it is pulling so hard on its' leash. And that the people don't seem to bother.

Thank you for this video. I'd like to ask you what do you think about about extra long lines? I bought 20 meeters/65 feets one to give a dog extra freedom when walking in nature. But of course he pulls the line as well. Which let me think that even 1 mile line would be pulled :) So he is always in front of me. I get the line because my dog doesn't always come when call him 'come'. But that long line seems to be an extra complication.

My now 6 month old gsd/heeler mix is so hard headed. Like your pup being reactive and biting the leash in the beginning thinking it’s playtime, she’s doubling or tripling that amount of energy and behavior biting and chewing the hell out of the leash or collar or anything she can grab ( yes she has Kong’s and many toys for her to chew on, and even sour apple or vinegar doesn’t deter her taste wise for biting chewing). For example she had a flat collar with a regular leash today since it’s all I had available at the time, and made herself puke 3 times because she was pulling so much and wouldn’t listen to redirecting, corrections, or anything. I know I can break through to her but haven’t figured out how yet or I’m just over complicating things and making it harder for both of us... ps- love your videos, your way of explaining things, and overall love for the animals to make a better life for us and them, saving their lives.

I’d consider using a pinch and working with a good balanced trainer who can fairly get her to understand the situation.

Matt Chmura sounds like a good candidate for a prong! I had the same story with a shep I look after. It got to the point where the owners wouldn’t walk him bc it was dangerous with him choking himself out and not having the strength to hold him back. I fixed him up with a prong and it has made a world of difference! Watch Roberts new video on how to properly fit one!

How did this dog end up? :) Did a pinch collar fix the issue?
