  • What's the MG ZS EV like in the real world. Time for a test drive! I have a full day to explore and drive MG's offering to electric vehicles. The price point of this SUV is really good for an EV but does it represent good value or do you get what you pay for?

I Normally love your reviews . But honestly, that is an error ridden, misinformed, whinging, hatchet job you've done .
    So bad I had post this .. 20 !!
    1:02 SCIA
Its SAIC - Shanghai Auto Industry Corp. One of the world's biggest EV manufacturers. They've make EVs since 2008 and produce EV's for VW and GM in China..
    1:13 its rebaged..
The ZS was designed in a major part by the UK technical centre, and the car since launch has only been badged MG and sells under the MG badge in China and worldwide.
2:30 a wire will RIP it straight off..
course it won't, scaremongering. tut tut
The rubber caps are the same as most EV's why comment ???
    2:50 Dull ??
    2:57 executive... Exclusive
4:50 the rear bumper will make a rattling noise on the cabin.... Of course it doesn't scaremongering.
6:22 the steering wheel is cheap . No it's better than my previous cars
    6:31 laggy ?
6:46 cheap .. it's better than the non SE kona !
    8:35 ... and Android Auto ...
9:35 both get rear camera , no only the Exclusive gets a rear camera. Both get sensors .. don't know about the executive though .....
9:47 leather trim .. only the steering wheel . Its vinyl 'leather look'.
10:53 beeps and bongs .. you can cancel and turn off . It's not part of the features
13:44 lane assist bongs can be cancelled
14:26 KERS regen 3 makes no difference.. the Battery SOC is high and it's cold. . Like most EV's in that condition regen will be limited .. a warning will have appeared on the dash warning you..
15:55 the wingmirror adjuster will come off on my hand .. of course it won't..scaremongering..tut tut
16:32 range .. 140-150 in the winter already done at motorway speeds of 65mph . It will do more in summer
16:37 Agricultural..ride. you stopped short . ..but you mentioned , ridiculous comment.
21.55 unrefined engine bay .no covers . Can see through .. so just like the leaf and gen 1 Soul ??
22:33 NCap 3 ... that's for the ICE version 2017 .. . EV has a different transmission and no engine and gearbox and a reinforced alum battery compartment . + the ADAS driver aids . The correct thing to say would be the EV version hasn't given an NCap rating yet ...
But hey ..its your opinion ...

Frankly I'm surprised it's not been responded to . If I'd posted this with so many inaccuracies and unfair comments. I'd have taken this review down by now. Edited ,reshot to the normal high standard and fairness I expect and trust.
I've now driven over 1,400 miles in MG . Replacing a Soul30 . Driven alot of EV's over the past 4 years . The MG has compromises. And it does have flaws that will cause some to decide it's not for them . However not of these valid shortcomings were raised in the video ! . And its main benefit ( a liquid thermally managed battery ) wasn't even mentioned.. I laughed when mentioned against the Kona . A car 13k more expensive that you can only add your name to a waiting list , not buy . With some of the same hard plastics .restricted rear seat room and 140ltrs less luggage space.
Do the right thing .. pull the video .

Ryan I am a little surprised by some of the review.
The regeneration on level 3 is fairly strong although it doesn't stop the car, but it does catch people out as the car almost stops the good thing is the brake lights apply on level 3.
At the moment NCAP level hasn't been released i expect 4 and yes it should be 5. But we shouldn't be quoting a different car.
Beep and bongs beeps are lane departure and it's a pain so turn it off. Bongs and horn means you didn't take the key with you when you got out. Can be switch off.
Take the lane keeping off and it doesnt move around so much.
It not a tesla, but it's almost half the price
Compare zoe basic owned battery £28500
    Leaf basic £28000
The MG needs some improvements specially some of the software, but hopefully a software update will improve things
It's a big car for the price. I drive the MG , my wife drive our Leaf.
I think you need to wait a week and then review some of the facts in this video
Keep making you video I enjoy them. Just feel you might not have fact checked this one

Got to agree - I tested one recently and came out with a completely different opinion. The KERS on 3 is brutal and allows one foot driving, and the auto cruise really helps on motorways. I was bridling a bit until you said that you were comparing to other EVs - which is fair. This is the only one I've driven and compared to my current Qashqai and last car (Juke) the dash etc are absolutely fine. For the money (which is £3.5k less than you quoted) I had to order one. So I did!

Oh come on guys. Ryan got one thing wrong - he misspoke the name. Everything else is his experience of the car. Who knows why there wasn't an increase in regen? We certainly don't know.
It's not a low standard view just because it doesn't say your favourite car is the best thing since sliced bread..

@@paulgoffin8054 hi, just to say I think Ryan does a brilliant job, he is one of my favourite TH-cam channels. What is a red flag for me is the safety information, comparing a three year old car with a new version of it with additional safety features (I am not talking about the old and new leaf😀) isn't correct information. There were other points but those were more personal choice about the car. I don't mind about calling the car incorrectly. There were other points which have been detailed in other people's comments.
We have a leaf Tekna 15 plate and the MG, I love driving both and if I waited another eight months and paid a additional £12,000 I might have a eniro. It's difficult to work out which car to buy and yes MG should have released the new NCAP results. It just shows how difficult it is to get the right car, Ryan appears to be struggling to find a replacement for his car, I expect it will be a kona from just EVs.

@@evguy2154 I don't believe he's completely wrong about the safety information. Yes, there's now blind spot detection on the top model, but there's nothing that makes rear seat survivability in the actual event of a crash any better and the ICE did not score well in that, particularly the child survivability in the rear seat (read the report). Also, the absence of a centre head restraint. Come on, these have been standard for over two decades...

Buying an MG supports the Communist Party of China. People that care about their own economy buy products from people/companies/brands that are designed and/or developed and/or researched in their own country or ally country. The people that work for those local companies, in free democracies, then buy other products developed in their own country or ally country and that keeps their families and friends in work and making money. Stupid people buy direct from Chinese brands and send every single penny out of their country and destroy their own economy and eventually their entire free society because they are cretins and/or greedy and/or want things they can't afford, and rather than wait and save. They are happy to screw over their entire economy in the pursuit of self-gratification, selfishness, and ego. Buying CCP owned brands and products fuels Chinese R&D and weakens free economies. Your children and your children's children will suffer as a result of your choices. This is not hyperbole, it is fact.

Yes it’s an exclusive model not executive and the excite model does not have rear view reversing camera as stated and most of the exclusive model tech is not offered on excite. The Ncap rating of 3 is for the ICE model and MG have indicated they’re not going to retest the MG EV so due to all the additional tech in EV over the ICE model the EV is likely to be Ncap 4-5 rating:-)

EV Opinion I’ve ordered a Black Exclusive which is due next year so I’ll register my first EV as a 20 plate. To me as I’m new to electric vehicles (currently I drive top of the range diesel qashqai) I found the cabin of the MG EV good considering the price point of my car £24040 and when compared to a similar sized vehicle the V2 Kia eniro with 9 month waiting list of £38195 -£3.5k gov grant and a smaller boot the MG ZS EV is a bargain. I have to agree it feels cheap in parts but that’s because it is cheap (same chassis as petrol ZS) and no loss of boot space. Whilst there are some incorrect points made in your video I still enjoyed your overview :-)

Are they really not going to NCAP retest the EV? Occupant safety of the ICE vehicle is really low with child occupancy at 51%. That doesn’t sound like a problem a bit of tech can fix. If it is likely to get a higher rating they should put it forward for testing. If they aren’t that makes me think it could be worse and however good the price my life and that of family and people traveling in my car is worth more than a few thousand pounds. I wouldn’t consider visiting the showroom unless I could see a tested rating.

This is your worst review. I really like your work normally but was surprised at your negativity towards the car. I have test driven the car twice (have test driven a few other electric cars too) and cannot agree with you regarding so many points, such as the quality of the materials, ride quality, noise etc. Also you clearly haven't researched the car well as a lot of points and things you have said are wrong. Its a shame as it does make me feel that you had an agenda and I have never felt that with your other videos. Its absolutely fine to have an opinion which is different to others, but factual inaccuracies is another matter, like the name of the car you are driving! With regards the Euro NCAP rating, you are referring to the petrol cars rating which lacks so many safety features of the Exclusive (not Executive!), as far as I know the EV has not been tested yet, but its undoubtedly going to be better than a 3 with its extra safety features. Well anyway its your opinion, but would be good to avoid the factual inaccuracies that may give people a false impression of a car that is more attainable than other EV's due to its price... which you also got wrong!

    Hi
I have been a fan of you reviews for some time.
I do think that you got it wrong on this car but at the very least I think you should edit the video to include the new 5 star ncap rating. On the facebook groups many people have cancelled their orders because of your video stating the 3 star rating. Also an incorrect video like this will devalue the second hand price of current owners cars, not really fair on those people who have paid a lot of money for a car with a 5 star rating.
If you don't like the car fine but it did not seem to your usual unbiased style. I think you need to be professional enough to correct your mistake although I appreciate it was the best guess that you had at the time you made it.
KERS 3 has amazing stopping power I can happily drive just using KERS 3 and hardly ever using brakes. I can only assume that your beloved just EVs have given you a faulty car, or has their sponsorship had an influence on your opinion.
Hope the channel goes back to the style that we normally expect and usually very much enjoy.

Put my deposit down on Tuesday after our 24 hour test. Much more comfortable than my Zoe. My Zoe must be very noisy as both my wife and I commented on how quiet it is. Absolutely love the adaptive cruise control, especially in a traffic jam. Simply amazing. Renault have missed a trick not including it in in the 52 kWh model. Agree with you on the wandering. You can set the centre display to a digital speedo, but the lane assist keeps turning it off as you wander near the lines. Very annoying, but lane assist can be turned off in the settings. As I've driven for 40 plus years without it I don't feel I need it. I found the regen levels fine. I'll have to change my label to Man with MG EV :0

I agree the lane assist does make the steering lighter in the direction the lane assist wants to go and this makes it feel like the car is wandering. Take lane assist off and it "feels" more planted on the road

I have two other ev’s from other more “well known” manufacturers and I can assure anyone reading this that this car is every bit as competent and well screwed together as they are. Who knows what the reasons for this type of negative review is but seems very odd to myself and many others that viewed it.

Some things were valid like the charge port it is flimsy and weak. My brother has one and it does seem a bit like it'll break any wrong move when you lift it.
Rest of the car is solid as nails in build quality, yeah there are some cheap plastics but it's a £24k EV (with the Gov and MG grant) so you expect that.

I picked up my MG last Saturday ( 16th Nov ) and i am well and truly chuffed with it.
It's pretty much one pedal driving except for the last few yards.
I would like a light in the charging port as it's pretty dark in there. Rather have that than the glowing MG badge when charging. Pretty but unnecessary in my opinion.
The ZS has an NCAP rating of 3 but the EV should be 4 because of the extra safety features.
I think the cabin is just fine. It a nice place to be. Pay another 10k and it will be better. That's a no brainer.
Having driven a diesel for the last 4 years i think the MG is lovely and quiet.
All in all i think you were far too critical of the car. It's not a Tesla i know but......it's not a Tesla !!!!!
The car cost me £23,500 with all the grants and contributions. I paid extra for a spare wheel and mats and flaps. That added a few hundred to the cost but well worth it in my opinion.
The 7 year warranty is fantastic. Total piece of mind.
The sat nav is a bit slow but i can live with that. It's seconds to wait. Not the end of the world.

Morning Ryan, I can see many are not happy with this review! Just a few days ago I cancelled my order for a white exclusive but I thought the car drove great. The reason I cancelled was personal to me but if asked about this car I would more than recommend it. Time will tell if this is good car or not based on the experience of owners. Had I seen this review prior to driving the car I might not have bothered. If there is one great thing about this car is it makes other manufacturers think about their price point on their vehicles which is good for everyone. To those who own or intend to continue with the purchase I hope the car is successful, enjoyable & reliable. I think MG should have launched the iSmart version into the UK though.

  • @Kiltoonie
    @Kiltoonie 5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

OK: let me explain why I have ordered one anyway.
Firstly, this is being bought as our second car: we own a 64 kWh Kona SE already for the sporty and long range stuff, so this is the shorter range replacement for our 2016 30 kWh Leaf.
Now, sure, we could have held onto the Leaf and driven it into the ground, its good for many years to come, but right now it still has all 12 bars and has a pretty good resale value: in 12 months and 10k miles it might have lost a bar and given the great competition, start to look a little shabby and outdated.
But the MG is a vastly superior car to the 30kWh or 40 kWh Leaf on almost every criteria you name to mention: features, price, range, battery cooling: what's not to like?
The issues raised in this video are minor and a bit hyper-critical.
I'd speculate that the MG - right now - is probably the best value for money of any EV on the market, bar none: I'm thinking £ per Mile of Range: and that is depite the leading edge conveniences.
I reckon the MG is now the car to beat: bar none. Vastly superior to the alternatives on most measures.
Also I distrust current pricing and grants: how much longer will the government be giving away £3500 for every new EV sold? Watch this space, but my guess is the MG will cost £2-3k more this time next year: maybe even more. As I found with the Kona, sometimes it really makes sense to be in quick.

Why do car reviewers invariably say bigger wheels are/look better? Surely small wheel rims use tyres which give better ride comfort and they are more fuel efficient. They are also less likely to get damaged on our pot-holed roads. The major downside to this vehicle is the lack of winter pre-heating and off-peak overnight charging. What's the point of a buying a cheap EV if you can't charge it cheaply?

  • @keithgeorge7338

Thanks for the vid. I agree, has problems, car does need steering correcting constantly. The only EV I can afford with 7 year warranty. The important thing is for us to replace all ice cars to help stop climate change. If we don’t, our children won’t survive to drive any car.

    • @keithgeorge7338
      @keithgeorge7338 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

I understand what you are saying captain, and there are lots of other influences. We have only had 15,000 years since last ice age and another would decimate Europe and global warming could cut off the sea currents and create a new ice age. Mans activity has definitely created global warming and unless we try to control it I don’t think many people if any would survive for the next hundred years or so.

    • @keithgeorge7338
      @keithgeorge7338 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

captain pugwash. Do people realise that cold non salt water from ice melt in Greenland and artic region sinks and creates a current along sea floor which goes round the world and drives the Gulf Stream from Caribbean to spread heat to northern hemisphere giving us mild climate. When all the ice has melted, maybe in tens of years, the currents will stop and the warming will stop the ice age will return to the northern hemisphere. USA, Europe and Russia. The climate warming is only the beginning. When the cold water at bottom of ocean warms, the millions of tons of methane trapped in the mud of the oceans will begin to release. This is far worse than carbon dioxide for trapping the heat in the atmosphere and there will be no way of stopping it escaping. How many joe public understand this catastrophic possibility. Does joe public think, we’ll what does it matter if it gets a little warmer. Years of flooding in some areas and drought in others, sea rise and flooding large areas of land and deltas all over the world, mass migration, low food production then an ice age within maybe a hundred years or less, over thousands of square miles and no stopping it we we leave it too late. Even freezing Snow and ice part of the year stops food production. Maybe it is too late already.

So many of these reviews claim its noisier than its competitors..... but reviewers who went to the bother of testing decibel levels prove its actually quiter. I suspect there's some laziness and mutual confirmation taking place.... "if I say the same things about noise, plastics etc as the other reviewers it will look like I'm competent". Its just annoying and, plain wrong. Check out Byorn Nyland who owns one of these and a Tesla. He tries to conduct fair tests under similar speeds and conditions. He's tested a lot more EVs also, and the MG comes out really well on noise, quality, acceleration (actual 0-62 is closer to 7.5 seconds than the cited 8.5). The MG is quieter than the Kia, and tops its price competition on interior space, as it does with cars costing a lot more. Range is OK too and the active battery cooling is a must but not seen on the Leaf.

It doesn't have any timers of any kind. It also, currently, has a fault that means it cannot work with an external timer (one on the charger) as, if not actually being charged, the car "goes to sleep" after a minute and will not handshake the charge start.

I think a used Zoe or Leaf would be my other options. I don't think the ZS would pass the current safety tests at all though I speculate that's why they're going with the ICE NCAP. I don't know for certain but I think from 2018 cars have to have an 'eCall' feature. This alerts authorities in case of an accident.

I think some of your comments were a wee bit harsh.
I am 63 and remember my slightly older friend's first car from about 1973. It was a Ford Anglia. One day we were driving home and it was raining and I suddenly felt my feet wet. Looking down, all I could see was the road beneath the car going past at a heady 40 mph. Yes, the passenger seat with me in it was sitting above a completely rusted floor and probably sub frame. My owen first car, a Mark II Ford Escort was a bit similar and I spent more on WD40 to keep the points dry (remember them,) than I did on the car itself.
What I am trying to say is that, yes, you get what you pay for, but in comparison to what I drove growing up, this car IS a Rolls Royce.
I haven't driven for a while now and my last car was Honda CRV AWD. Big car, very spacious, but also pretty noisy. I will be test driving this before the end of the year, so will be able to compare some of your main criticism for myself.
Would I like a Tesla? Yes. Can I afford it? Perhaps, but I could buy 2 of these for the same price and as the majority of my driving is around town, I would imagine the MG would be more than adequate.

Not having seen anything from Ryan for a few months I wondered what had happened. Somebody on SpeakEV speculated that the negative feedback on this review might have put him off. I think that's a shame. I can't comment on the car itself but this review is far from the hatchet job I'd expected from some of the comments. Criticisms are balanced with praise and he concludes that it is very keenly priced and that it is no surprise it is selling well. In some ways this could be the Dacia of EVs and there is nothing wrong with that. I hope Ryan comes back soon as he has been one of the more interesting TH-camrs on the EV revolution.

Ryan I've had my first EV 2011 Nissan leaf I was then the first to have the 30kw leaf on the road in December 2015 both of which I had major probs with.
In my opinion you look at the leaf through Rose tinted glasses the leaf has hard scratchy plastic which the whole dash is made from and the car is well over priced now. If you speak to any dealer they are not selling very well because alot of EVs have over taken nissan due to awful range, only passive battery cooling I have owned an EV for much longer than you.
The MG EV will be my fourth so on my drive now is a 41 kw 19 plate Zoe which again is much better than the leaf in range and along side it is my MG EV which in my opinion beats the leaf hands down.
you still have a 24kw leaf and if you were to buy a MG now you would look a complete fool after your review.
By the way James and Kate have come out of a Tesla and have had their MG for 2 months now and they love it.

Ryan, I totally agree with you about the safety rating. When the MG ZS EV came, one of the first things I checked was the EURO NCAP report on the ICE version (3*), which lacks the active safety features. Provided they work correctly, the active safety features in the EV version should add an extra star to 4*. But you can't get 5* without sorting out the design. It's not a total disaster like the Ford Mustang. But it should concern us all that some manufacturers continue to design cars that do not protect us in an optimal manner. It's perfectly possible to do it much better, as evidenced by other manufacturers that consistently get the highest ratings.

    • @EVOpinion

Tim Schneider it puzzles me how manufacturers don’t all get 5 stars. The test is publicly available so all you ha e to do is tick the right boxes. There is no excuse as far as I’m concerned.

Wow serious amount of hate towards this video. Yes there was a couple of mistakes with names but that doesnt invalidate the rest of the points.
There no getting away from this being built to a cheaper standard than other EVs but at its price point that is acceptable (in the same way budget brands like Dacia in the ICE world).
That doesn't mean it's a bad car. Nor does Ryan not agreeing with others opinion mean he's wrong.

The European version does not have iSmart (the app) and timed charging is not possible. This also means that charging from "off grid" power e.g. solar is unreliable as the car does not wake up again if the power supply temporarily drops out.

I decided a while ago to buy a new car (ICE) as I thought genuinely that electric vehicles were far too expensive and there weren’t enough larger vehicles to choose from. I was looking at a Citroen C5 Aircross which I test drove and I also test drove a Nissan Qashqai. Then one day on the way back from the Citroen dealer I saw that the Chapel House garage near me had become an MG dealer (they are already Kia and Fiat) and outside they had an MG EV... so I popped in. I was taken aback by the car, it was a red excite in the showroom and it was lovely, a perfect size, larger than all other EV’s under £30,000 and I was amazed by the quality. I arranged a test drive was incredibly happy with how it performed, not just to drive but practically. I have decided to buy one as after in depth research nothing can touch it for value for money. £22495 is an absolute bargain for the excite...considering the Leaf is £24k, the Peugeot 208 £28k and the Vauxhall Corsa £29k.
I love it tbh and this weekend I have the intention to buy one.
Then just this morning whilst researching still I came across this video review 😟. Then I read the comments.
Ryan, I genuinely believe you need to take this review down and do a new one ignoring the obvious pressure put on you by outside sources to give the MG such a poor review when it clearly doesn’t warrant it. An apology would be good, maybe then we could move on and you could continue your channel and gain the respect that this video has damaged. Thanks
