@Chazter Not interested in SUVs... As a general rule, they are no different in size than a normal hatchback car. They cost more and drive worst. Kona is actually small, so even more not interested. Like the Mokka...or new BEV Jeep...too small.
I’ve had my MG ZS EV for 2.5 years and it has been trouble free motoring. I test drove 6 cars before I bought it and, though the Kia Niro was better, the MG was a worthy runner up and £££££ cheaper. It is extremely economical to run (£325 charging for the past 12 months, approx 10k miles, servicing less that half what my Hyundai Santa Fe cost), and does 95% of what I need it for. The other 5%? I either use the train or my wife’s Audi A6. That is the key - buy the car that covers your needs. I’ve never charged away from home and my overnight electricity rate is currently 7.50 p/kWh. It drives OK too.
We now have the MG4 available in Australia. What's even better we have one pedal driving, rear wiper and rear reversing camera and that's on the basic excite. 😊
I actually prefer the MG5, went to test drive a 4, ended up driving the 5 instead because I much preferred the interior. It's a 'pleasant' drive and I would consider getting one, but... No NCAP rating. The spare parts issue also seems to be a real one as I've heard several reports (including in comments here!) of months long delays.
Different cars for different applications and different people. I have a 5 because we have two dogs - it's been great over the last year and I've never had to step into the dealers (apart from it's annual service) since the day we bought it. I have been trying to make the decision between the MG4 and the ZS. My boys are now teenagers so no need for the additional space for buggies. Go for the MG4 definitely, I've had the Zs ev, now got the MG4 and its worlds apart for driving fun and charging (I've had 142 kW up to 70% then still 67kW past) 80% 4 time's as fast as the old Zs. 😊👍
The MG4 would be the one for me. I was really surprised about the passenger backseat space. The MG5 was not as practical as i thought and had not so much space on the second row. So see and test it yourself.
I managed 255 miles from a full charge in my mg4 trophy driving to fully charged live. Stopped at ionity at gretna on way home and put in 110 miles in under 9 minutes. Peaked at 139kw.
For me the MG ZS is the best buy and the best looking of the 3. I like the MG4's specs but the styling doesnt do it for me - its trying to hard and looks like a boxy boat version of a gallardo. The ZS has more comfort and practicality and the most comfortable interior - esp for rear passengers
MG4 for the looks. The absolute bargain is a pre-facelift MG5, no app but physical buttons for everything. May be it is only me, but I am parking quite often at our local Lidl with type 2 chargers. Loading items from a shopping trolley to the car boot is far more convenient for a forward parked car, which means the charging port location on the MG5 is more convenient.
If MG5 is bigger, like length comes to around 4.7-4.8m + flat rear seat when it is folded off+V2Lfunciton, I will give 95 out of 100. If it also give the technology of the MG4 like app and Bluetooth key support, I will give 99 out of 100!!!
We're going for the ZS over the M5 on the driving position and was disappointed the the MG5, despite being an estate, had quite a high tailgate at 65cm, which is quite a way for a dog to jump up and over into. The ZS's tailgate is about 2 cm higher but when your dog is already having to be Shergar it doesn't make too much difference. Come on EV manufacturers, please give us a low tailgate boot car like the MPVs and estates of old. It would be so much more practical for us dog owners, and I'd buy one virtually whatever the spec if it had a low boot for Fido!
I wish the Marvel R had come to the UK. The better than a Leaf (MG4) the VW Passat / Toy Avensis love child (MG5) and the MG ZS which feels unique (but not in a good way) are all amazing, great value and competitive. But it's only when the MG Cyberster arrives which may change the marque forever by combining nostalgia with futurism! Hmmmm 2 seater MG convertible for the weekend, I think so sir....
MG4 every time - ok, I've just bought one so I'm biased! I did a direct comparison between MG4 & 5 and chose the 4 due to looks but also interior room. Leg room on the MG5 is rather dire if you have a tall driver in place. The other thing that put me off the MG5 was the seats did not fold anywhere near flat which makes loading the vehicle awkward. Very impressed with my long range Trophy MG4 - had it three weeks now and it's still a huge novelty. Combined with Octopus Intelligent Go, local and mid range journeys are really cheap.
Remember when 8 secs 0-100 was hot hatch territory? These speeds are more than fine…they are very faster for the average family, especially when you think 0-50km is faster than ICE cars…
Thanks for this, I tried the 4 and 5, wanted to love the 5 as i like estates and pretty much zero ev estates out there.....however i could not get on with the driving position, it feels like your sitting on top of a few yellow pages, the 4 is much more mordern and i did like it (especially considering the price)
I agree. I sat in a 5 the other day and really wanted to like it but found the driving position really odd. The left foot rest felt like it was in the wrong position too.
I like the look of the MG4 but due to being over 6 foot tall and having a bad neck that doesn't bend very without lots of pain, I love the MG ZS and currently have an E-Niro.
I think, similar to other comments, the MG4 definitely looks like the best all round option (in that it is better in basically every respect). I'd be tempted by an MG5 for the extra space - not sure our dog crate would fit in the MG4, although I would try it first. The ZS sounds reasonable, but I don't like the looks at all - an AI generated design with the prompt "boring SUV"? Even though the MG5 is a pretty generic estate car, I still think it looks more modern than the ZS.
I have the MG ZS EV MkII and my friend has the MG4. I disagree with you on the rear passenger space, the ZS is definitely bigger. While the seat down size maybe ever so slightly bigger in the MG4, the seat up is much bigger in the ZS. My friend uses a wheelchair and it's a bit of a tetris game getting everything in his MG4, but with the ZS it's no problem. What next? Well I love the ZS, I am so tempted with the MG4 XPower (us old gits love annoying the youf!) but may well consider the MG5, as I have a lazy Greyhound who refuses to jump into the ZS! Weird or what! 🤣
I have a top range ZS EV, with the sunroof, tow bar, added a frunk for the cables. I bought it for 30k € last July, current S/H value is 34k € !!. So I am waiting for the longer range MG4 to arrive with 550k range, and buying that, then selling the ZS.
😊 absolutely agree with you MG 4 WINS HANDS DOWN.. however it would be excellent if they had a Frounk and a little bit more speed it's a bit slow for me... about the weight, I don't know how they managed to make it so heavy???
There’s a few things wrong here, the two different mg4 you are showing, according to you are supposed to be se models, well they are not, the orange colour is only available in the trophy model and the red one is also a trophy model. Also the mg4 can charge at 11kw for ac. Also the best looking car is the mg4 in trophy spec!
The MG4 has rear multi-link suspension which helps driving and comfort a great deal. The ZS EV on the other hand has rear torsion-beam, not bad but can't match the MG4's rear independent suspension. So what about the MG5? All in all, I want the MG4. Not only the MG4 corners very well but it's also very stable thanks to its rear suspension. Looks good inside out. Only drawback of the MG4 is the Bridgestone tyres but that can fixed very quickly by taking the car to a tyre dealer. Personally I'd go for either Michelin Primacy 3 or 4 otherwise Continental MC6. Both Michelins and Continentals have long tread wear and yet good grip especially in wet conditions.
What BMW, VW group, Stellantis group would give to be able to offer these Cars at that price. MG build quality seems spot on and the warranty one of the best on the market. MG may not win the badge snobbery but wins the smart option. And they must be doing well there is a fair few on the roads now. Right I’m away to buy a Car brand like Triumph, Alvin, Austin Healey and bring out a few uk built EV sports cars - who’s in with me 😁👍
Didn't drive the MG 4 yet. But between the MG 5 and the ZS EV.... I would always got with the ZS EV. It just feels better. Don't know why. You can see better, it lays better on the street and it's more comfortable to sit in. And...the trunk didn't feel much smaller than the MG5 one.
Generally, I think they are all good cars but I would be more drawn to the 4 or the 5. The thing that would swing it would be colour. In the MG garage round from me they had a 4 in an absolutely gorgeous dark blue colour and it suited the car very well.
@@markmueller8099 perhaps it had been wrapped or something. Was at the garage for about a week when I saw it, was definitely dark blue and looked very nice
I know I’m being a little bit of an old man yelling on his lawn about this, but what’s really disappointing about MG is that none of these vehicles appear to have any real reference to MG vehicles of the past. Now I know that the new vehicle that’s coming out will have some reference to the old MG convertibles, But it just seems like this is another set of vehicles with a relatively characterless shark/dolphines/bird of prey look to it. The wagon looks a lot like an Infiniti, and the other ones just look like relatively generic style exercises. I know the EV‘s don’t technically need a grill because They have far less need for air for cooling, but most automobiles are defined by the way their headlights and grills look, and this business of minimizing and flattening all those things just makes everything look the same. The best I can say about these cars is that they’re in offensive. If any one of these was the only one with this style, it might seem interesting. But this just seems like what all car companies are doing. Especially Chinese car companies, but not limited to them. As the next generation is deciding that they’re probably not going to want to own a car, making vehicles, more and more generic, is not going to change their minds.
If I could fit my wheelchair rugby chair in the mg4 I would go for that I find the ZS works for me. I have a mk1, my facelift model arrived at dealership today. Just waiting on hand controls to be fitted
I bought my ZS EV in sept 2021 and loved it loads until a small mistake on my part landed it back to the supplying garage for repair - 3 months ago !!!! They say they've ordered parts but not yet received them and have no anticipated arrival date. They also told me that they have another ZS EV at their garage waiting parts for over 12 months !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I’d want the space of 5, with tech of 4, but the design maybe of the new Marvel… so I’d be interested to see this test re-worked once the Marvel’s available.
I drove a zs petrol for a few weeks and whilst the car was “nice”, the rear was too vague on the motorway and the controls in the cabin were too minimalist and lacked feedback….
Ok review, pity it didn't even mention which is the most efficient. I.e. what is the miles per kwh per car, so how much per mile to charge? Surely with an EV we need to know efficiency, rather than just range.
The MG4 for me now, looks the best. Kids are a bit older and bigger so extra room in the back a big plus and no push chairs or buggies so boot space less of an issue. If I still had young kids I would have gone for the MG5. I dislike SUVs, what's the point? Hatchback type space with massive bulk.
Unfortunately for us none of them at the moment. Need space for 2 dogs, camping gear and a towbar bike rack. MG5 could do but it’s a bit too small and the MG4 is much more modern. Now if they had an MG6 - bigger boot, pure EV from the ground up and under £35k I’d bite their hand off (or my dogs would!).
I know, virtually all EV's at the moment are not dog friendly with their high tailgates and compromised boots, though I think the MG5 does the best job so far. Does the MG4 have a lower tailgate?
I agree with the conclusion. Looks wise? The ZS is a horrible blob and should be available in camouflage as opposed to bright colours. The MG5 is pretty innocuous and estate like. The MG4 looks good, if not inspiring, inside and out
I wish you all had the MG Marvel R Suv to review.. it was a strong design when it was released in China and Europe. I just saw the 2023 Marvel R in MG Cambodia LH drive.. I wish they built the RH drive version.
My MG ZS can achieve, and regularly does, 10 miles per Kwh around town. Its only the 51 kw battery and recharges from 10 to 80 % at home in only 5 hours, 7kwh charger.
Driven all of them, the MG4 is fun but everything is on the touchscreen (annoying as hell) The MG5 is a decent practical car. I brought the ZS. (The opening sunroof is noisy as hell though)
I have an MG4. Not everything is on the touchscreen. It has physical buttons under the touchscreen and the star buttons on the steering wheel are programmable.
I found it most confusing in have a ORANGE car in the line-up and then using a different colour when describing the detail - What model was the ORANGE one? Thank you A++++
@@markmueller8099 yeah I know. It’s just what MG refer to it as. It’s like the MG5’s The facelifts are both called ‘Long range’ when there is just 1 size battery.
I'd definitely buy an MG5 if it shared the platform of the MG4 and had better interior space but it's just a facelifted older platform which is a shame.
weird: the MG4 in the video is orange when standing snd also obviously when filmed inside (one can see it on the door next to the driver) but red when filmed outside... filter issue of the camera or two different videos mixed together?
They really need to revamp the MG5 Estate car. The MG4 just looks like a hatchback that is inflated itself like a puffer fish and the ZS like a shovel nose snake. The estate has all the practicality and smaller frontal area to make it go further on the highway. No one else makes a reasonably priced EV Estate...
@@CobnutVTS Thats where our hopes were (untill we saw the estimated price of €60k). The only EV cabrio with a usable range is the 42kWh Fiat 500e Cabrio, but that is already €38.000. I guess the cost of the Cyberster will be even higher. That will make it unobtainable for us. We used to be able to buy several ICE Cabrio's for around €20k to €25k. The ICE Fiat 500 Cabrio still is €20k But with the arrival of the electric cars, they seem to have doubled in price, and even more than doubled.
I think you are right there. Though i am pro electric, and would like to own one, the price difference between ICE and EV is still huge, even after 10 years doing 20.000km per year, ICE still is cheaper. And the starting prices are like unobtanium. I buy a brand new ICE cabrio for €20.000. Same car as EV starts at €38.000. To get a loan for that €18.000 difference wil set you back an other €3.000, which makes a total of €21.000 more for the EV than the €20.000 ICE cabrio. . . . . .
@@markmueller8099 BYD Atto 3 cost somewhere bit more than our MG ZS EV Essence or your equivalent top model of your ZS EV. However the Atto 3 has rear multi-link suspension which means the BYD has much better handling, stability and comfort over the ZS EV. The only way the ZS EV can keep its toes is by wearing a set of Michelin Primacy 3. In short, I might as well spend a few thousand dollars more and get the Atto 3 which is way better than ZS EV.
I'd love it if they offered the MG5 as a saloon as well. Also: Does any energy supplier offer overnight tariffs these days? I haven't seen any offer them for a long time.
I have an MG4 SE standard range and I charge at home for 7.5p per kw. So my 51kw battery costs me £3.82. for that, I get 200 miles. That works out to less than 2p per mile.
The MG4 looks the most modern, but modern and funky-looking is not the only market out there. A more middle-aged car buyer (you know, the people who actually have the money to buy new cars) might very well prefer the more down-to-earth, traditional looks of the 5. MG is hedging their bets very nicely.
MG sell more EVs than any other make in UK except for Tesla! They must be doing something right. I question that 2 six ft six friends would get in the back seat of the MG4 but they can the ZS!
I was so excited by the mg5 because I enjoy the practicality of estates, but the 5 is so badly designed. High load lip, narrow opening and rear seats that don't fold flat. What a shame

You keep referring to the MG4 as SE. The test models are Trophy. Only the trophy comes with spoilers or orange colour.
You're in luck, it's not long until the Peugeot e-308 SW & Vauxhall Astra-e Estate hit showrooms.
I very nearly had an MGZSEV but chose a Renault Zoe because of the better range!! At that time, the ZS was the only MG that was electrified!!
I would buy a MG3 EV but hear they aren't going to make one . Such a pity that smaller cars are being ignored.
The MG3 has been discontinued for quite some time where I live
Unless the MG3 can be purely electrified, I'll take a Honda Jazz. It's simply a much better car.
😊 absolutely agree with you MG 4 WINS HANDS DOWN.. however it would be excellent if they had a Frounk and a little bit more speed it's a bit slow for me... about the weight, I don't know how they managed to make it so heavy???
It's 30 mph faster than the UK speed limit.
I agree MG4 probably the best car, MG5 best family option and we nearly leased one - but couldn’t fit all the family including child seats comfortably
They don't do a dark blue MG4. It's called Holborn blue and it's a very light solid colour.
@@markmueller8099 perhaps it had been wrapped or something. Was at the garage for about a week when I saw it, was definitely dark blue and looked very nice
I hope MG open business in Canada soon. I would buy MG4 as my day to day drive.
If I could fit my wheelchair rugby chair in the mg4 I would go for that
I find the ZS works for me. I have a mk1, my facelift model arrived at dealership today. Just waiting on hand controls to be fitted
Is this through motability if so how long did you have to wait?
@@scottwilson3479 yes it was motability
Took from January 2022 until June 2023
I am going to buy MG5 in two days time. Fingers crossed 🤞
I absolutely love mine.
I can't believe I heard nothing about different ranges of the different MGs
Gosh...
That's a surprise to me...
Just how WIDE the MG4 is compared to the MG5 Estate...!
I would never have thought it...
MG4 Estate would get my vote. Unlikely they’ll probably do a crossover version as they are bigger sellers.
Hello. My M5 has 11kW AC charging. I have the Trophy if that makes a difference.
In Australia, the MG5 is not available. I purchased the MG ZS EV Mk1 in 2020 and it has been a very solid car though I would prefer the lower MG5.
Thanks. I reckon the 4 for me.
I’d want the space of 5, with tech of 4, but the design maybe of the new Marvel… so I’d be interested to see this test re-worked once the Marvel’s available.
The review missed that the ZS EV and the MG4 have Euro NCAP crash test results that are good but the MG5 has NO results. Strange.
My MG4 standard range easily returns around 4 miles per kWh and that's in Sport with the HVAC on.
My 6 years old daughter Hanna would choose the MG4, myself instead, for practical and range reasons, I would go for the ZS
As a disabled person of pensionable age, I consider both practicality and comfort before top speed!!
The 4, yes 👍🏻
(Is that headphone bleed, we’re hearing?)
MG5 would be my choice.
Not sold in the UK. Won't be coming until the next generation in a couple of years time
Looks good in reviews but no more space than an MG5 - needs a bigger boot for me.
Surely the Chinese sales are RH? So you could import one!
Regarding space i set in an MG5 and ZS EV and found the MG5 to have way less space in the second row.
I would love a 6/7 seater, 3 row MG5 with captain seats on the 2nd row.
My MG ZS can achieve, and regularly does, 10 miles per Kwh around town. Its only the 51 kw battery and recharges from 10 to 80 % at home in only 5 hours, 7kwh charger.
how well is the ZS ride quality compared to MG4? and how does a 51 kw ZS fair against a 51kw MG4 ?
Driven all of them, the MG4 is fun but everything is on the touchscreen (annoying as hell) The MG5 is a decent practical car. I brought the ZS. (The opening sunroof is noisy as hell though)
I have an MG4. Not everything is on the touchscreen. It has physical buttons under the touchscreen and the star buttons on the steering wheel are programmable.
Yes, there's are some, just to much on the touch screen for my liking. Way to distracting to drive
MG4 is the best. If you need some extra space then go with the 5.
I found it most confusing in have a ORANGE car in the line-up and then using a different colour when describing the detail - What model was the ORANGE one? Thank you A++++
Trophy. If it has a spoiler it’s the Trophy Long range.
Orange is exclusive to the MG4 Trophy
It's just a Trophy. You don't need to call it "Long range" as they don't do a standard range Trophy
The external footage is taken from a different video. It's why it's snowing in most of the video, and summer in the MG4 driving clips
I just want the next gen MG5 to use the same underpinnings of the MG4 with an even more practical estate form.
If anyone get zs ev suv in the summer you get 320 miles and 273 miles in winter so this is a great car and price
Great car!! But MG isn’t really my bag. I’m actually looking at a Vauxhall Combo camper called the Wheelhome Vikenze IIIe.
I would rather an updated ZS on the MG4 platform.. and preferably with AWD.
You will in just a few years. ISTR MG have said that the MG4 will be their OLDEST EV by 2026.
MG is making great EV's. MG4 hands down the nice oneof this 3.
Maybe a small Cabrio next?
the cyberster is coming out too
@@CobnutVTS Thats where our hopes were (untill we saw the estimated price of €60k).
The ICE Fiat 500 Cabrio still is €20k
But with the arrival of the electric cars, they seem to have doubled in price, and even more than doubled.
@@BMWHP2 ICE is the way to go man, i dont see myself in an electric car not with them prices as well, get an old MG F you'll never stop smiling
To get a loan for that €18.000 difference wil set you back an other €3.000, which makes a total of €21.000 more for the EV than the €20.000 ICE cabrio. . . . . .
It would be very successful. Their Cybster is too big and too expensive!
What's a 2 point turn? :-)
The MG5 where I live is, and always has been a sports coupé - not an estate car. Weird!
My choice is MG Cyberster.
Ours too! 😊
Mine too but not sure my 2 big dogs would agree 😂
@@ISuperTed Ian, your dogs would prefer the MG station wagon.
MG Cyberster,敞篷、速度、两门轿跑。如果定价20万RMB以内将会是绝杀
The ZS doesn't offer that much more interior space compared with the 4. The ZS just seems an oddball really, plus its size hurts economy etc.
Great review, thanks. Can you do a BYD atto3 vs mg4 review?
BYD Atto is way too expensive. It can't compete with the MG4. Same as the Ora Cat.
Thanks for this!🙏👍
Huggs from 🇸🇪
mg ztt is the one for me
Great comparison video thanks
I'd love it if they offered the MG5 as a saloon as well.
Also: Does any energy supplier offer overnight tariffs these days? I haven't seen any offer them for a long time.
Octopus and, I believe, Ovo
@@Draigthedragon and EDF
Octopus Energy have reduced the cost of their Intelligent off-peak tariff from 10p per kwh, to 7.5p per kwh.
I have an MG4 SE standard range and I charge at home for 7.5p per kw. So my 51kw battery costs me £3.82. for that, I get 200 miles. That works out to less than 2p per mile.
@@markmueller8099 i would have half expected them to discontinue a cheap off peak tarrif. Interesting, il look into it.
That’s not an SE LR. It’s an MG4 Trophy - you only get spoilers and the orange colour in the Trophy of the MG4.
The MG4 looks the most modern, but modern and funky-looking is not the only market out there. A more middle-aged car buyer (you know, the people who actually have the money to buy new cars) might very well prefer the more down-to-earth, traditional looks of the 5. MG is hedging their bets very nicely.
The orange one pips it 😊👍😂😂
Definitely the MG4
MG Cyberster
MG sell more EVs than any other make in UK except for Tesla! They must be doing something right. I question that 2 six ft six friends would get in the back seat of the MG4 but they can the ZS!
I hope MG bring out a smaller EV soon. These are all slightly too big for what I need.
I was so excited by the mg5 because I enjoy the practicality of estates, but the 5 is so badly designed. High load lip, narrow opening and rear seats that don't fold flat. What a shame
MG4 all the way ❤
As a new dad I can confirm all the extra stuff a baby needs to carry. :)
thank you lady your a angel of tlling thanks
Correction - I get 11kw AC charging for MG 5.
