In shorter events like 800/1600, so where you don’t worry about the pain that will be in a long time such as in 3200m or longer, I actually find the last quarter harder and more consequential, because for me, going a little beyond comfort zone, which is often (when I’m mentally weak) all that I can give, is very different time-wise from really giving it your all. There’s a difference between having 60s left in an 800m or maybe 2 minutes in a mile where you KNOW to press on vs actually being super close to finish and needing to unlock every bit of your being.
Hey, Niko Schultz. I have been a subscriber since the spring. Serious question as I am a senior in high school. I used to be a 5k (19:34) to 2 mile (12:11) specialist, and I tried the 800, but wasn't great as I was a little too shy on the speed and have a pr of 2:35 and was badly cramped. I feel like I can run faster than that if I focus up and train more of my speed. I am switching my main event to the 800 as I have been bombarded with overuse injuries from my 40 mile weeks and I realisticaly can't achieve my goal of being able to qualify or hang with the top 2 mile runners at States who run anywhere from 10:50-9:40 off of 20 weeks of training after a whole month off from injury. I was wondering if you think it is possible for me to achieve 1:55 in the 800 with more speed baised training to win the state meet and break a divisional record. My speed isn't top tier with 100 time of 13.4 200 time of 27.62 on a gravel track 2 minutes after an 800 race. I have run 4x4 splits of 59 and a 58 or 57 in a time trial and is going to be faster this year. I built a good base in the Summer with a peak of 48 miles and running 800 reps around 2:39-2:47. Is this even possible, 2:35-1:55 with 20 to 27 weeks of training?
