    2nd place for the men running half the race with 1 shoe after losing the left one is probably one the craziest things I have ever seen.

      One of my teammates had his shoe taken off shortly after the starting line at states and came in second, he lost to my other teammate, who incidentally was the one who took off his shoe. Definitely wasn't comparable to today's second placer, third was most of a minute behind them two.

      Do you know if he lost it halfway through? He’s on video here shoeless at the halfway mark, but I have to wonder if he lost it during the first 500 m.

      That just means he didn't pace it right. He went too slow the first 9 km. His overall time and placement would've been better with better pacing.

    • @jameshenry6655
      @jameshenry6655 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      @@RA-lu6mb Oh I definitely agree, he definitely could have positioned himself better earlier on in the race. Everybody around him throughout the race was splitting the same times as him per km, Nathan just had a lot more energy than others around him. Maybe if he were to pick off 20-30 people over the first few km's he 100% could have had a much better placement.

    I realize the hubris of youth and peer pressure makes it seem like you should wearing short because everyone else is doing it....but at 35f....wearing tights, long sleeve shirt, hat and gloves will give you an advantage, it's basic thermodynamics, your body will spend less energy heating itself and more energy running.

OK, I'm paraphrasing, but that was basically the reason. When I started running XC in the early 2000s a lady called Paula Fudge used to run for one of the other teams. Paula set the first recognised women's 5000m world record back in 1981, because prior to that women were not allowed to run that distance competitively. The world has moved on, women can now run whatever distances they want, and excel especially at ultra distances, but XC still seems to be stuck in the old days.

    Just wait until next year in Columbia, MO. If they get dry conditions the winner will be in the low 27"s on the men's side. For sure under 19 on the women's side. Even though the course is 2 and 3k loops (the men will run the starting straight 4 times) this course SUCKS for spectators

    "Maybe not just for collegiate athletes but for anyone in the United States"?
    Not sure what you're saying this for. The NCAA Nationals are just that, NCAA athletes. So what exactly did that mean?

    Not really XC. Come to the UK and see proper cross country. Where was the mud? Where was the river crossings? What about running through woods? Or snow? Running track speeds on manicured grass lawns and finishing without legs caked in mud - its not XC.

    Kenyans are barefooted most of their lives, including XC races in Kenya. Most, only wear shoes because of contracts and being pushed to do so my their coaches. Watch Kenyan XC races, most are barefooted.

      Then train smarter and beat them. Endurance sports success is really simple, big volume, a little bit of intensity, with progressive overload in those two domains over a long period of time is equal to success.
