Hammer bullets are still my preferred bullets. Far more variety and they consistently shed petals to push through a blunt faced shank that absolutely devastates game. They’re more expensive, but they’re always in stock, ship extremely quickly, and you can talk to their owner any time during business hours if you have questions. Great company!
If a monolithic sheds all its petals and you are left with a shank they tend to be lousy killers. Had that happen to me in Namibia with GS monolithics and they were useless killers.

Hi Team Hornady :) Love the format - only became aware of it due to the very popular episodes recently and heard some very interesting details about non-lead bullets. I think it was Miles who said that non-lead bullets appear to have a harder time compensating for irregularities in the barrel. A few months back I was working on a lead-free load for a 6.5Creedmoor in a Bergara B14 HMR and wasted nearly 500€ on components trying half a dozen bullets from different manufacturers (including the CX and ECX) with useless results for every single one of them. Went through three different powders, cleaned the barrel thoroughly and tried every trick in the book - would hardly hold a 2MOA group with 5 shots. Was shooting jacketed lead bullets before and after with really good results and went back to lead core bullets since. Shooting a tipped hunting bullet now that basically gave me „sub MOA“ performance from the start. Can you elaborate a little on what effects could have messed with lead-free bullets? This was a very expensive lesson for me other shooters & reloaders can hopefully skip! Btw: shooting lead-free bullets in several other rifles with great success!
You will have to research that for your caliber. As an example I shoot a .270 win and the available factory Ammo with the CX bullets only come in 130 grain not 150. This is because the twist rate to stabilize a bullet depends on the length of the bullet not the weight. Copper alloy being lighter it will be a longer bullet compared to the same weight lead core round.
Normally I hand load for my prc ….tried a box of the cx ammo for fun….best shooting factory prc ammo I’ve ever shot. Mean radius 0.25 moa for first 20. Ordered several more boxes.
Need a copper-bismuth projectile with tungsten core. That's the future. Will be heavy enough to keep projectile short for flight stabilization in all barrel twist rates, expands fully/retains 100 % weight, and penetrates any living substances.
can you tell me why the new cx bullets have a lower BC than the replaced GMX? 130g .270 cx is .403. while the GMX is .460. why would would the new "better" version have lower BC?
@@Blair338RUM is it? they both have 2 grooves. but that really isnt even my question. its why make the new/better bullet have a lesser BC than what it replaced. After watching backfire TV and seeing that the ammunition companies are fudging their hunting bullets BCs, i'm guessing the GMX's BC was embellished. and was actually .403 or at least closer to that number
Why are these lighter weight/longer monometal bullets not coming in with faster fps than a bullet 10/15 grains heavier? ie 160gr CX vs 175 ELD-X in the 7mm PRC?
So i am waiting for a box of 139 grain CX’s to come in to work up loads for my daughter’s 7mm-08. Is it still good practice to seat the bullets .050” off of the lands like other monolithic bullets?
Maybe I missed it but what would be the closest non cx equivalent to use as a cheaper practice round while building loads that could then be truthed with the real deal?
HEY!!! Just now from Hornady. I just bought hundreds of the 190 grain CX bullets for my 300 Winchester Magnum. "John, this bullet is going to require a 1-8 twist to stabilize the bullet. So for every chambering that is running this as a standard twist rate we would be updating this bullet into that data. Thanks Hornady/SnapSafe Tech Team" Last week there was nothing about a far faster twist rate. Now, their online load data has just vanished! I have a printout of it from last Thursday. What's going on Hornady?
Hornady has been my GoTo ammo for all of my firearms for the last 35 years . I just recently bought a Tikka T3X Hunter in 7mm-08 and 5 boxes each of Superformance 139 grain CX , Precision Hunter 150 grain ELD-X and American Whitetail 139 grain Interlock. Because of the innovation of your ammunition’s accuracy and ability to effectively take game , I am able to utilize a 7mm-08 instead of the ol .30-06 that have been using for most of my life . With Hornady ammunition, the 7mm-08 can do it all from antelope to elk .
I have recently switched to the 7mm-08. I was anxious to try the CX bullet out of my Browning Xbolt but so far I’m not impressed. My groups are literally 5” at 100 yds😢
@@longgone9869 Wow that’s quite a spread for only 100 yards . My Tikka T3X groups it all just fine ( 150 grain ELDX is the most accurate at an impressive 3/4” group ) the Whitetail 139gr is about a little over an inch and the CX 139gr is at 1 & 1/2” at 100 .
@@nj-bz8pv I wouldn’t assume they all took it. My company mandated it and I just told them to f-off. Called their bluff and they didn’t do Jack about it. I’ll bet my story is not an uncommon one.
Well I'm glad you guys were out hunting I'm pretty sure you guys can get your hands on ammunition on a daily basis it'd be nice for the consumer to get their hands on ammunition especially things that were in the same damn state
Just go on the internet and get the bullets shipped to your house if you reload. As for factory made ammunition, being more “boutique” bullets , you may have more difficulty finding it. It is pretty good stuff. I went to Texas for the second time to smack hogs and all I can say is it was a massacre with these things. Between these and the Barnes bullets, I am going to finish off the soft points I have on my next trip and just stick to monolithic.
I noticed on my older Hornady ammo with a red tip that the “polymer” tip has shrunk considerably. Will this noticeable shrinkage affect the performance of the ammo to the point where I should trash the ammo? No pun intended. I buy your Duty ammo for four different pistol calibers usually the plus P and many hunting rifles on the heavier for caliber end of the spectrum. I have a 308 that loved your light magnum ammo, but I haven’t been able to find it for years now. What would be the closest alternative to it?
I’ll give my opinion here on your first question. If the tips are deformed, it will effect your bc. Furthermore, I’ll bet no two tips deformed identically, which means your shot to shot consistency is going to be garbage. But I wouldn’t throw them out. As I see it, you’ve got two options. 1) use them for plinking loads in a non-precision setup and just have fun with them. 2) Try pulling the tips. Behind those tips us just a hollowpoint projectile. The polymer tips only exist to make the tips more consistent than an open meplat. Since they aren’t doing that anymore, just pull them out like a bad tooth. I’ll bet those bullets will shoot great without them.
Do you think it's finally time for a 6mm magnum? Or a new short action 243 replacement with a faster twist and longer bullet in the 130-140gr class. I shoot a 6.5 creed and a 243, the difference between the 2 is pretty Remarkable when you look at the bullet selection and weights. Those 100gr bullets show their age and seem to not perform as well as a 6.5 creed. I'm not a fan of the 6mm creed because the ammo is hard to find and it seems very picky on powders for reloading. I think its mainly because it wasn't optimized like the 6.5 was. It seemed like they just crammed the 6mm in there and crimped it down. The pressure spikes seem to make it very notch and creates weird cells.
Can't wait to try these because the 150grain 308 lead free I use now works but when it hits inside of 300 yards he literally grenades inside a deer..... perfect boiler shots I end up losing tenderloin or guts cut from shrapnel.
you have lead free bullets breaking up inside the animal? i thought that was the entire point to these rounds. weight retention. the CX is what i'm thinking about setting up for my sons new rifle in .308
I feel like manufactures are so focused on new tech in the middle an ammo shortage. Forgetting woods hunters who don’t take shots beyond 200 yards. In turn it’s been hard to find ammo for 270 3006 etc.
We want the gmx back! That was a monolithic at a fair price, now i shoot barnes because i cant afford $50 a box, PLEASE BRING THE GMX BACK, give an affordable version too, not just high end
This wss explained in the video. A monolithic copper alloy bullet has to be longer than a copper cup and lead core bullet of equal weight. It is LENGTH, not WEIGHT of the projectile that influences the twist rate required to achieve stabilized flight. Optimal twist rates will be the same for same-caliber bullets of the same overall length.
So I bet Hornady Manufacturing looked at the bullets as made by the company named GS Custom and decided their designed Turned on a lathe monolithic bullets were too costly to make. So, you continued with the method that is less costly. Drive band bullets are far superior, because the body of the bullet is bore diameter while the bands are groove diameter. GS Custom makes bullets for the target shooter with the highest BC, and they make hunting bullets for both thin skin and thick skin animals, as well as flat nose Dangerous game bullets that will work though lever action rifles, as well as single shot drillings. They are almost all Drive Band bullets in calibers from .17-.50 BMG.
Yeah that's nice that you're launching a new product but it sucks that we can't even get SST or GMX ammunition from our local ammunition dealer here in Nebraska. But in all honesty, you guys did too good of job with the CR. Now, you need to real these people back in. Just cause the cr has enough power to poke holes in paper at a k, they think the elk should drop. This ain't tag. It's a wild game animals whether it's deer, bear or elk. The 6.5 Hornady and Ruger joint work was and still is a huge success! Great job. But the thing with business owners is they are never satisfied. As, the eye of man is never satisfied- book of proverbs. Even as Eric Cortina says, you do get more bang for your buck with the .284 cal's. I believe the 7 cr with 180 grain eldm and 175 gr eldx would change the game again. And if you don't do it first, it will be your fault. The 6.8 westerner does come close. You'd have to come out with the rifle too to match the needed twist. But you know that.... You guys did a great job with the Superforamnce powder too! Hands down one of the best. It seems to me, you guys are just trying to squeeze all you can out of the 6.5. And even with the levererution ammo. I use it in my great grandfather's 94 win 30wcf built in 1910 to put down beef when I butcher at the house. It's a good product! Anyway, I used lot of your guys products and will continue to as they become avaible. I would like to see the industry put the put the current engineering into .284 with 30tc or 308 case capacities.
they had to come out with a new bullet because the eldx is a junk bullet that comes apart, obviously the testers don't know what they're doing, the eldx bullet isn't even bonded.
EldX is an overhauled SST to get match grade characteristics like the ELDM. Match bullets aren’t bonded for best accuracy. Bonded bullets are best used when shooting very fast so that they hold together. Slow your ELDX down with less powder or a slower cartridge to reduce stress on the bullet, increase your range to reduce impact velocities, or aim for squishier shots when impact velocities will be over 2600-2700fps (neck, behind shoulder), or switch to a stouter bonded or mono bullet. I use ELDMs which are even more prone to coming apart than ELDX but as a result, they open up at even lower velocities. Works great with mild cartridges like 308 in short barrels, or at extended ranges, but same principle. Try to match the bullet toughness to your expected impact velocity.
I'm confused.. You talk about the CX line of bullets, but going off your product spec.. you fail to note the min twist rate or even the length of the bullet.. What gives?!
Some folks like to rip the new cartridges, but being designed around longer VLD bullets, they are also more capable of handling high-BC lead-free hunting bullets, if we get forced into that.
Apparently Hornady’s product research team has never bothered to get a hold of a Hammer. They are the cat’s meow of monolith bullets. The LRX boasts the best BC’s of the bunch as well. The numbers on the Hornady are disappointing.
Ron Spomer likes Hammer bullets. As much hunting experience as he has, if he says he likes something, you know you can trust it to be true. His reputation is second to none.
How did they spend an hour discussing wha they “figured out”? Barnes did it years and years ago.. Maybe they cam highlight how these are better than a TTSX or the Long Range version….
Why are you crapping on this guys? Creedmore is one of the most popular calibers out there obviously if it didn’t work it wasn’t as popular as it is?? What’s your problem?

Missing .264 and other CX Bullets in the Applied Ballistics Data. Does it collide with 4DOF ?
Is the 130gr cx going to be offered in the 6.5 Creedmoor? The 120 gr is available but I haven't seen the 130
So does this mean the normal traditional twist rates for these calibers would have to be changed to shoot these specific bullet?
Best question here.
Lead free is a huge thing for us in CALIFORNIA because not many high quality lead free.
What do you mainly use here in cal? I use the winchester copper xp for my 270 now I’m looking for the best option for my new 6.5 creedmore
130 grn may not stabilize in a grendel 8 twist. 120 gmx were very accurate and borderline stability. Any plan of a monolithic grendel bullet?
can you tell me why the new cx bullets have a lower BC than the replaced GMX? 130g .270 cx is .403. while the GMX is .460. why would would the new "better" version have lower BC?
It’s the grooves, mate
@@Blair338RUM is it? they both have 2 grooves. but that really isnt even my question. its why make the new/better bullet have a lesser BC than what it replaced. After watching backfire TV and seeing that the ammunition companies are fudging their hunting bullets BCs, i'm guessing the GMX's BC was embellished. and was actually .403 or at least closer to that number
Why are these lighter weight/longer monometal bullets not coming in with faster fps than a bullet 10/15 grains heavier? ie 160gr CX vs 175 ELD-X in the 7mm PRC?
Do they make any 8 mm. Or .325 for my 325WSM.? I know it’s not a high priority round.
Still cant find 6mm ARC ammo in my local stores. How about working on that Hornady.
So i am waiting for a box of 139 grain CX’s to come in to work up loads for my daughter’s 7mm-08. Is it still good practice to seat the bullets .050” off of the lands like other monolithic bullets?
Yep, the CX's typically do well with a good amount of jump. .050" and work away from the lands further if you need to.
Maybe I missed it but what would be the closest non cx equivalent to use as a cheaper practice round while building loads that could then be truthed with the real deal?
Awesome products from Hornady!
Can you shoot in a30-06 Springfield 10 to 1 twist.
Thanks
Hornady/SnapSafe Tech Team" Last week there was nothing about a far faster twist rate.
What is the reccomnded fps for full expansion. Would 6.5-300 weatherby push this bullet to fast.
2000 fps for minimum expansion velocity. The 130 grain should be really good in your 6.5-300

What is the depth of the cavity in the CX?
Shoot them, bet you don’t notice a difference
6mm Creedmoor and 6mm ARC are basically the new 243.
Going to give it a try. Old gmx had a reputation of not being as accurate
Thanks !!!!!!!!!
We want the gmx back! That was a monolithic at a fair price, now i shoot barnes because i cant afford $50 a box, PLEASE BRING THE GMX BACK, give an affordable version too, not just high end
How has accuracy been with the CX bullets? Optimal twist rates same as equal weight leaded bullets?
This wss explained in the video. A monolithic copper alloy bullet has to be longer than a copper cup and lead core bullet of equal weight. It is LENGTH, not WEIGHT of the projectile that influences the twist rate required to achieve stabilized flight. Optimal twist rates will be the same for same-caliber bullets of the same overall length.
Why nothing for the 7PRC ? is the 6.5PRC better ?

I believe the 7 cr with 180 grain eldm and 175 gr eldx would change the game again. And if you don't do it first, it will be your fault. The 6.8 westerner does come close. You'd have to come out with the rifle too to match the needed twist. But you know that....

What happened to 6.8 spc sst ?????????
they had to come out with a new bullet because the eldx is a junk bullet that comes apart, obviously the testers don't know what they're doing, the eldx bullet isn't even bonded.
Please, please, PLEASE make a CX in 120gr 7mm. Compete with Barnes.
I'm confused.. You talk about the CX line of bullets, but going off your product spec.. you fail to note the min twist rate or even the length of the bullet.. What gives?!

Who would force you into that? Just give ‘em the middle finger.
Apparently Hornady’s product research team has never bothered to get a hold of a Hammer. They are the cat’s meow of monolith bullets. The LRX boasts the best BC’s of the bunch as well. The numbers on the Hornady are disappointing.
