  • If there’s anyone that knows a thing about the BMW 5 Series, it’s Howard. He’s a big fan having had many himself and driven practically every variant over the last decade or two. So, who better to check out the latest G30 M550i? We set off to Hampshire's famous Elvetham Hotel to check it out link below. Most importantly how much can you get one for?

    There’s lots of 5 Series to choose from. Whether it’s the entry-level 520i, the latest 530e or the 530d, many of the key qualities are carried over. But this one’s special. It’s like an M5, but much more suitable every day. It just happens to have 523hp and gets from 0-62mph in less than four seconds.
    💭 Out of interest, what’s your favourite 5 Series of all time? Let Howard know in the comments!

    The model Howard tests in this video is the M550i xDrive Auto, with the standard spec including:
    ✅ 20in double-spoke alloy wheels
    ✅ Drive performance control with eco, comfort and sport modes
    ✅ M-specific interior
    ✅ M-specific styling kit
    ✅ iDrive 7 infotainment system
    ✅ BMW live cockpit with 12.3in high-resolution display
    ✅ 4-zone climate control
    ✅ xDrive four-wheel drive system
    ✅ 4.4-litre V8 petrol engine producing 525hp/750Nm of torque
    ✅ 0-62mph in 3.8 seconds and 155mph top speed (limited)
    ✅ Harman Kardon stereo system
    Howard liked:
    👍 The improved seats compared to previous G30 models
    👍 The fact it’s as quick as recent M5s
    👍 That it’s easier to live with than an M5
    👍 High-res instrument screens and refined interior
    👍 New look rear lights
    Howard didn’t like as much:
    👎 The road noise from large 20in alloy wheels and run flats
    👎 The ferocious M-Sport brakes
    👎 BMW Online Entertainment subscription cost
    👎 The heavy steering
    👎 The fuel consumption

    Took delivery of my 2023 M550i in November of 2022. The ride was a bit harsh so I swapped out the run-flats for some Michelin Pilot Sport all season tires. I was pleasantly surprised by how much it smoothed things out. It will never see any track time. It is my daily driver and I love how it carves out the canyon roads here in the mountains of Utah. I removed the emblems on the back of the vehicle that designates the “M” series and model, when the dealership applied a full body ceramic coating to the vehicle and have not reapplied them. For people that are not very familiar with BMW it has turned into quite a sleeper car. Young kids in their Mustang GT’s, Camaro SS’s, Dodge SRT,s and others, frequently taunt me while stopped at red stop lights. I am not a racer and consider myself to be a safe, law abiding citizen. (Well, mostly). Occasionally, I will oblige them. I try not to exceed the speed limit but, I rapidly accelerate up to the posted speed limit. (What law-enforcement would consider to be Exhibition Driving, I’m sure). I slow down at this point and absolutely love the look on the kids face of shock and awe when I let them pass me. Again, I only do this once I observe light traffic and no pedestrians present. My lovely wife, absolutely does NOT condone my actions but, with the little devil on my shoulder I just can’t help myself. My first BMW. I’ve never gotten so much pleasure driving a vehicle. Truly impressive.

      Once you’ve had a BMW it’s hard to want anything else. They are real drivers’ cars and the driving experience dominates everything. I’m on my sixth M car and they just get better and better. The 5, in any form, is a fantastic car.

    To be fair. BMW offers the most diverse range from the German rivals.
    You have the m550i, the M5 which is still quite soft and comfortable. The M5 comp which is hard-core but still daily friendly enough. Then the M5CS which is an outright BAVARIAN MURDER WEAPON.
    For the M3 you also have options for manual aswell as the standard auto...and this is for the enthusiasts. You can also stick to the RWD only instead of the AWD which every other company enforces these days.
    That's why I like BMW. If you want soft and comfortable. They have a car. If you want the best of the top range...they give you further 3 options

    I own the predecessor M550d (yes, d, something that I don't think you got in the UK, at least in the G30/31 family) and with respect to your point regarding DA+ I have specifically not chosen this option because:
    1) I want to drive the car. Not for most of the time but for all of it. As you mentioned, these cars are such good driver's cars, I don't want it to hold me in my lane, even on a long motorway journey, I don't want it to keep a set distance to the car in front of me, etc. DA non-plus has the only really important safety feature to me - it stops the car in an emergency situation, i.e. if I am approaching the car in front of me and am not applying the brakes. First the car beeps and flashes at you and then initiates an emergency stop, so you don't crash into the guy in front of you.
    2) Especially adaptive cruise control is really annoying (on any car, in fact). The distance, even on the closest setting, is way too big. This means that someone from the middle lane will always move in front of you because the gap is supposedly big enough. As such, the car will always apply the brakes in order to keep the set distance. Rinse and repeat. Personally, I find this extremely frustrating and just not smooth. If I just have non-adaptive cruise control, I can already, from the corner of my eye, see that the car in the middle lane is going to change lane and move in in front of me - I can just disengage non-adaptive cruise control, slow down without having to touch the brakes, and then apply cruise control once the new speed/flow has been established.

      Good post.

    • @blacov89
      @blacov89 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree about adaptive cruise to some extent. In the UK this feature can be annoying and is far from the smoothest way to travel. However try to use it when there is stop start traffic. It is brilliant or when going through a section of road works with average speed limit. Set the speed slightly higher than a car in front of you but not too high and just follow the guy. Obviously sometimes it makes sense to cancel it in advance as you can see that traffic is stopped up ahead. Overall I would say it works decent in certain situations. I use the feature on an oldish volvo so probably it's an older system.

    I've had my M550 LCI for about a year now, broke 5k miles yesterday. Mine is pretty much loaded ($94kUS MSRP), except the overpriced stereo and the laserlights, which are unavailable in the US. Like you said, I got it because I figured it would be my last V8 BMW.
    That out of the way, I do like that car, but there are some things I'd like to change. First and foremost, this car needs a better exhaust. I'm driving a V8, I want to hear the damn thing! Second, it needs more gear. I find it quite sluggish in the city when off boost, and I believe it due to the gearing. Its got 2.81 gears in the diffs. Would it have killed them to use the M5s 3.15s? They used them in the M50i SUVs, which feel a lot better. Third, the cost cutting and decontenting really bothers me. They removed a lot of options for the 21 model year, at least here. Laserlights, gone. Soft close doors, gone. Self park, gone. Display key, gone. The rear window blinds are freaking manual, like in the X3, not electric like the 7. And this was before the chip shortage. Fourth, they need to do something about the paint. I have the Tanzanite Blue Metallic II Individual paint (a $1950 option), and its ridiculously soft. Virtually anything will scratch it. I had no choice but to have the car ceramic coated to keep it presentable. And finally, the lack of performance recall. This was a black eye for BMW. I was one of the first to report this to the dealer, that the car wasn't living up to the promised performance. It took hundreds of us, plus Car and Driver to get them to look into the problem, and eventually get it fixed. That never should have happened. They should have done internal testing with production models before releasing them, and not pre-production cars with different programming. This was a bad look for BMW.
    Anyway, yeah, I'm done. This is/was my 6th BMW, 4th V8, and it may be the end of an era. It wasn't always perfect, but I'll be sad to see it go.

      What was the performance recall?

    • @MikeL-FL
      @MikeL-FL 2 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      @@mubblemann The cars were advertised to do 0-60 in 3.6 seconds. Owners weren’t able to get out of the mid 4’s because boost was being limited. Launch control would only bring the rpm up to like 2800rpm.
      What ended up happening was, BMW decided that some modules weren’t talking to each other, which was causing the problem. They did a recall, and reprogrammed some computers to get everything on the same page.
      Now launch control will let us launch around 3000rpm, in boost, and nearly all of us have our 0-60mph times in the 3’s. Even my fat 335lb ass in my heavily optioned car did 3.72. Not 3.6, but with my weight, pretty close.

      Coming up to one year since I got my 2020 model with all the bells and whistles including the display key. Had a choice to get a 2021 for the same price, however it involved a wait and less atttractive financing terms. Happy that I dodged a few bullets including the performance issue. Not happy that I got saddled with i-Drive 7 "light" which does not allow remote auto start or OTA software updates. I would really appreciate the ability to warm up the car during our brutal winters. Don't care much about cooling it in advance during summer, as the windows can be wound down with the remote fobs. For such a beast of a car, it is incredibly sluggish off the line in economy mode. Have had a couple close calls making left turns in front of oncoming traffic. Anyway, these are minor FWPs and the car is amazingly incredible and comfortable!

    • @MikeL-FL
      @MikeL-FL 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@Sonic-and-Robotnik Not really. I made up the power with a tune, so all I don’t have is the RWD mode. But I do have the 4 wheel steering, which isn’t available on the M5, and more than makes up for the power deficit. I think the M5 suspension would have killed my back by now. It’s just too stiff for the streets IMO.
      Now if I drove on the track, and the CS was available, then I’d be regretting it. But for the street, it’s hard to beat the M550.

    Best car for the money. One major problem is those run flats and those soft rims on the model in this video. I am maniacal about avoiding any holes and bumps in the road but some things cannot be avoided. Nevertheless, all of my rims have cracked, and twice have left me stranded and waiting for roadside assist. The rims are not repairable and not available as of 5/2024 so this 90,000 car becomes worthless pretty fast unless you buy after market rims. I'd like to meet the genius who thought run-flats were a good idea with soft alum-alloy rims!
