    The biggest trouble makers with BMW "50i" are those with the first generation N63 that's everything with that 50i number model years '08 to '13. From 2014 onwards BMW have revised the N63 to the N63TU and fixed many inherent issues.

    Im on my 2nd x5, my first one was a 2003 loved it, a 17 year old bmw and drove way better than new hondas and kias, and the onky thing i had to fix in 3 years was the air conditioning ans was not that expensive just took a week to get the parts. My current x5 is a 2016 6 cylinder turbo. Had brakes done kind of expensive for brake pads but i had the bmw dealership do them because i don't mess around with brakes and safety. But if you find a shop thats fluent in servicing bmws its welllll worth it. You get a solid solid car with uncomparable safety. And dont need a brand new bmw to be current like honda or toyota

    I bought a 2011 X5 with the big boy engine about a month ago. I knew it was going to need some work it's got 152,000 miles and of course when I get her home after a couple of days I opened her up one time and the engine malfunction light came on. Of course it goes away after you turn off the vehicle anyways I had noticed previous there was a little teeny crack in the turbo cut off valve which had then grown into a complete big crack across the whole turbo cut off valve. I had took it into my local BMW dealership to have the antifreeze flushed and the power steering flushed and a couple of other things and they found that code saying there was something wrong with the air mixture but the mechanic could not find anything wrong and I actually had to go in there and show him the crack on the turbo cut off valve and he had agreed that would have throwing that engine malfunction light.
    Long story short I'm no mechanic but I am mechanically inclined and that is a turbo out job to replace those valves which I had done myself and I upgraded the turbos in the process it saved me $5,000 if not more from the dealership to have to replace two plastic valves but it is a good thing I did because I did find one of the wastegate Flappers needed to be replaced which I did that to.
    I also done a liquid Moly engine flush and put some of their additives in including the smoke away which seems to help I've only driven it maybe 40 miles I'm planning on doing another engine flush and oil change in another 20 miles with liquid Moly oil this time with their anti-friction engine treatment and I'm going to throw in some Forte seal conditioner for the valve seals and some of liquid Moly fuel treatment I've already done and I've already clean the intake valves once with CRC intake valve and turbo cleaner and im planning on doing it again and I've changed the spark plugs in the coils.
    So all in all I'm happy I bought her I just hope the engine holds up another 50,000 miles for me I'm expecting to have to replace the engine eventually and they are running about 5 to $8,000.

    I bought my new X5 50i xdrive F15 Msports package in 2015. It’s a sports SAV. Extended it to gold warranty in 2019 with service package. It is pure pleasure. It is controlled by its software which learns from how you drive. I have not faced any issue that was not covered under warranty or that took forever or was an eye opener. Pirelli or Michelin tires only with Castrol oil. You drift it, race it or drive it in comfort mode...it always feels like the BOSS on the roads.

It’s a 2018 still under factory warranty. But I’m curious about the turbo heat and if adding methanol injection would help and minimize the oil consumption. I have snow performance on my duramax and it’s noticeable power increase. Very little videos on methanol with the 4.4l engine that needs cooling.

    • @eddiemcars

      The newer N63tu motors have more updated cooling than its predecessor. I think after a hard drive or a long road trip, as long as you give it a couple of miles to cool down before arrival to your destination you should be fine. The water pump and/or fan continues to run after shut off to help extract heat from the engine.

    My 2014 BMW X50i with 85Kmi on the N63TU engine failed CA idle smog test due to failed valve stem seals. The issue is covered in a class action lawsuit Isley v. BMWNA. BMW policy is to change the engine out for a refurb and my portion of that work would be $8K. Instead, I elected to pay Rich at Performance Motorwerk in Dublin CA do the work using the superb AGA N63TU tool set. Elring gaskets and seals are the best choice and can be bought from FCP Euro in CT. I may be among the first to be affected by this problem on the N63TU since smog tests are not needed during the first six years of a car’s life. It’s not a question of IF but WHEN this will happen to all N63TU S63TU engines, so be forewarned.

    I appreciate your in depth analysis of these vehicles. I was thinking that I wanted to get a BMW x5 then I learned there are "sub-models" offering different packages. I then came across Scotty Kilmer's channel which was discouraging to hear how he gives BMW such a bad review all the time. When you mentioned your job in this video, based on what you said, I was around 99.7% sure I was able to successfully know what your job is but I don't want to mention it here because it's obviously something you don't want advertised. :)
    Anyway, I was thinking that I would not mind being able to get a BMW x5, possibly x5M perhaps a 6 cylinder vehicle but with the way BMW tries to work through their problems it suggests to me that the best one to get is the last edition of the generation of that vehicle. I've heard but had no way to verify this, that the 2013 is great and the 2019 is allegedly the very best. What would your experience be compared to that, Edward?

So far:
    both High pressure fuel pumps, both PCV hoses and valves, all coils and plugs, new waterpump and thermostat, new coolant hoses, new turbo coolant pump as maintenance item, new auxiliary water pump as maintenance item, new engine mounts due to leaking fluid, new turbo lines both oil and coolant as maintenance items, new oil return cover due to leaking oil in the valley, four new shocks and mounts due to originals being totally dead...will post video of diy on these soon on my bmw channel on youtube.
    ZERO OIL CONSUMPTION between oil changes.
    It's a total bitch to work on, mostly because I have never worked on an N63...and because double the parts double the cost due to v8.

    • @eddiemcars
      @eddiemcars  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Scotty Kilmer is like most mechanics. They hate BMW’s, and they add to their bad reputation because they only see the bad cars. I don’t agree with some of the things he said. There was a short run with BMW/Mini when they first went to turbocharging. Those early generations of those motors do have their share of issues, the N54, N64, N14(Mini Cooper S Engine). But they refined them and fixed those problems with updates.
      That’s why I recommend the N63tu motors instead of the N63. The Tu still utilizes plastics for some parts, but the problems are nowhere near the early ones. The best advice I give is to get the newest model year you can afford.

      That’s the B&O system (Bang and Olufsen)

    • @eddiemcars
      @eddiemcars  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, it’s the B&O sound. (Bowers & Wilkins (B&W) wasn’t offered until the G05 X5.
      As far as sound goes, it sounds ok. Most people would find the HK adequate. Once you experience B&O, you wouldn’t want to go back to to HK. These cars are large and the acoustics go well with the space. The bass thumps your chest, the clarity of the mids and highs is amazing. I know some people feel the base isn’t enough but it’s more bass you feel than hear. Each speaker is housed in its own individual cabinet and you can easily tell since there is zero rattling.
      I have HK with my M3 and I feel, there’s more thump but once you crank the volume you can hear the weakness. It’s a smaller car and it does the job ok. The subs are under the seat so it seems the bass if heard from the outside of the car than the inside. It’s a weird feeling, often in the M3 people think my music is up loud because of the amount of thumping and rattling from the outside of the car but you get inside and it’s not that loud. I’m constantly adjusting my EQ trying to achieve the perfect mix of clarity because it’s changes as different volume levels. That’s something, I don’t have to do with the B&O.
      My advice is to listen to both, start with the HK. If you’re satisfied then stick with it. If you’re not, listen to B&O and you won’t go back.

      @@eddiemcars I did, now it seems like I have a problem in the engine to do with oil burning and the car has no warranty.
      The damn dealer want 1800 to diagnose
      And it’s been 3 years sign ether did valve seals . And if it’s seals again. They won’t warranty it .!!
      I’m just frustrated , I look at videos on TH-cam . Guys doing valve seals from 2-4k
      But I’m my stupid state, shops want to tell me 6500 .
      Bmw knew these damn n64 engines was dog shit and tried a hot fix and stall out for timing .
      Right now they should be offering rebuilt engines for 3k to damn customers who have these problems.
      All this heat shit if it is the turbos int the v causing this.
      They should have been made u damn solution to help out customers.’!!
      Heat shielding under , hood scoop,
      Different top engine cover , some type of modification that dissipates the heat.!
      Air Chanel …. Just shit before they made adjustments to the n63tu
      What about those of us stuck in these damn n63’s…we have cars we cannot keep .. they are basically junk, we can’t even swap the engine because nothing else fits .
      Their are real cunts for this and that really is a stain on the bmw name. Which we thought was some of the strongest cars ,best driving machines out there .

    I'm from family that only drives X5 50i and some small consumption of oil nothing to be concerned....I also work as BMW Master technician....and considering nitrogen enriched fuel that is not very good with this engine...reason behind is under heavy acceleration BMW ECM is heavily dependent wide band O2 sensors that causes out of set tolerance fuel maps..... BMW ECM also uses wide band O2 to trim fueldelivery individualy for each cylinder....And considering N63 revision you did your research quite well...also remember to always check spark plugs gap even you buy it from the BMW store...

With that being said going to buy our 50i tonight to add another toy haha. I don't buy a Tesla to save the earth but rather the for the acceleration haha

    I was going to buy a Porsche Cayenne Turbo, all the deals have fallen through. Started cross shopping this X5 just today. I just see/hear/read how awful the engine is and how terrible and how much of a "horror show" it is. Ugh. That's not helpful.

    • @eddiemcars
      @eddiemcars  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I wanted a Cayenne Turbo as well. At the time my budget put me in a 2012-2013 range. It was hard to find the spec I wanted too. I cross shopped the X5 and it was easier to get what I wanted. I was scared of owning the V8 too.
      I sold this one eventually. I’m on my second V8 X5 with the S63tu.
      If you are looking for one get a 2014 or up! The newer the better!

      no compression on cylinder 1.7. Then there was no pressure on the next cylinder number 3All the mechanics just wanted to replace the engine. Nobody wanted to fix the engine. no one even wanted to open the engine.
